Download or read book The Yankee Mining Squadron written by Reginald Rowan Belknap and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Yankee Mining Squadron: Or Laying the North Sea Mine Barrage The whole account is based on data obtained at first hand. The description of assembling the squadron for a mining excursion fits the third excursion rather than the first, but the difference is a minor one, affecting only the numbers present - six ships on the first excursion, ten on the third. All the rest is correct, in sub stance and details. Besides in uencing an early armistice, this great minelaying operation marks an epoch in the use of submarine mines in war fare. It was an event in military history, as well as a prominent operation, and the credit for it belongs not alone to the officers and men who were actually present but also to those of the old mine force, to whose services in developing, in our navy, the art of handling and laying mines in large numbers, the success of the great operation was so largely due. Download or read book America s Sailors in the Great War written by Lisle A. Rose and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, 2016 Lyman Awards, presented by the North American Society for Oceanic History This book is a thrillingly-written story of naval planes, boats, and submarines during World War I. When the U.S. entered World War I in April 1917, America’s sailors were immediately forced to engage in the utterly new realm of anti-submarine warfare waged on, below and above the seas by a variety of small ships and the new technology of airpower. The U.S. Navy substantially contributed to the safe trans-Atlantic passage of a two million man Army that decisively turned the tide of battle on the Western Front even as its battleship division helped the Royal Navy dominate the North Sea. Thoroughly professionalized, the Navy of 1917–18 laid the foundations for victory at sea twenty-five years later.

Download or read book America s Use of Sea Mines written by Robert Caruthers Duncan and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the history and use by the United States of one of the Navy's least spectacular and most effective weapons. The effectiveness of the submarine mine has not decreased with the coming of the space age. So long as cargo ships cross the sea, this unspectacular weapon will remain a major factor in control of the approaches to harbors, and the shallow straits between seas. Robert Duncan has devoted most of his adult life to the generation and augmentation of competence in the application of growing science to the design, production, and use of mines for the U.S. Navy. He joined the staff of the Naval Ordnance Laboratory before it was known by that name, but in time to capitalize on the experience of the Navy with mines in World War I. He provided the technical leadership which was an important factor in keeping the art and science of mining alive in the Navy in the days of the depression. By so doing, he provided a basis for a hundredfold expansion of the Navy's effort previous to and during World War II. The hundreds of technical people who had the privilege of joining in this effort under Dr. Duncan's leadership will be happy to see this accurate and factual record of achievement. The experience recorded between these covers will serve as a guide to those still engaged in the development of this type of weapon, and the achievements made during World War II will be an inspiration to any who might be responsible for again expanding our national effort in mining, should the occasion arise. Download or read book Playing War written by John M. Lillard and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the First and Second World Wars, the U.S. Navy used the experience it had gained in battle to prepare for future wars through simulated conflicts, or war games, at the Naval War College. In Playing War John M. Lillard analyzes individual war games in detail, showing how players tested new tactics and doctrines, experimented with advanced technology, and transformed their approaches through these war games, learning lessons that would prepare them to make critical decisions in the years to come. Recent histories of the interwar period explore how the U.S. Navy digested the impact of World War I and prepared itself for World War II. However, most of these works overlook or dismiss the transformational quality of the War College war games and the central role they played in preparing the navy for war. To address that gap, Playing War details how the interwar navy projected itself into the future through simulated conflicts. Playing War recasts the reputation of the interwar War College as an agent of preparation and innovation and the war games as the instruments of that agency.

Book excerpt: In The Poseidon Project, David Bosco tells the story of how rulers, merchants, navies, environmentalists, and activists have struggled to craft rules for the oceans. From the Dutch challenge to the Portuguese in the 17th century to the current turmoil in the South China Sea, it tracks the tension between efforts to control maritime space and the idea that the oceans should be unowned and open to all.
