Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Yale Literary Magazine, Vol. 45: February 1880 AS a wish, it is not sincere. We do not want to know in what light everybody else regards us. In the same spirit in which Pope speaks of blindness to the future kindly given, we should laud that blindness which, for our welfare and peace of soul, keeps us ignorant of the distorted and ill-founded views that we must necessarily, in most cases, have of one another. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Yale Literary Magazine, Vol. 45: June, 1880 The casement slowly grows a glimmering square, So sad, so strange, the days that are no more. Yes, sad and strange, and wild with all regret, these days of youth that are no more. There is nothing deeper, nothing more full of awe in this human life, as it has come to me, than this - which like life itself never grows trite of that Past which is our very Selves, with the irrevocable ness, all its joys and sorrows and errors, errors of ignorance and of necessity, as well as those of will, each one of which must yet live on in us through all time. We can not live over our lives, we can not profit by the wisdom we have so dearly bought, often we can not even commend it to others. Yet how blind and how helpless we seem, how moulded by influence of birth and early environments, how subject to slightest whim, or lightest chance, how governed by laws of whose very existence we are in ignorance! But not of this, nor of my own peculiar boyhood, do I wish to write, although I have sometimes thought that college writing would be stronger, and col lege conversation of more meaning and worth if we did not go so far out of ourselves for topics. Looking back over my life, I have seemed to see forces at work in it, general in their scope. To these I would ask your thoughts. The debaters go into the con ict to win, and are not disposed to yield a chance which may greatly strengthen their side. But it strengthens their side by belittling the whole debate and exhausting the audience. Even when it brings them victory, it robs that very victory of its prestige. Great care in framing the question and a spirit of broad magnanimity among the speakers should be the chief factors of improve ment here. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Yale Literary Magazine, Vol. 45: January, 1880 What then, you ask, is my idea of this four years of pleasure and study? I have said pleasure and study. Let me hope that I Shall be able to defend this simple word arrangement, though in the inverse order. Doubt less the expressed aim of our presence here has been study in its restricted sense. Incidentally to the attain ment of this Object has been the greater or less amount of gain, which each one, according to individual taste and character, has received in outside branches. A necessary accompaniment of this general and special gain has been to nearly every one of us the birth into the real world of thought. To some this birth may have resulted in an nu settlement of mind and an upturning of child ideas. Such we cannot refrain from denominating weak or, if this seems too extravagant, singularly unfortunate. To the average man, I believe, it has Simply proved an expansion, an enlargement Of his mental horizon, the first glance Of his Short-sighted eyes through the magic glass; the Old objects which have been within his View since earliest childhood are closest, nearest, dearest to him but how much more clearly seen, and what a World of unseen wonders are spread before him for his life study. Let the one who feels himself on the verge of giving up his child ideas take heed. He is throwing away one of his purest sources of enjoyment. A sad saying was that of one Of the best exponents in our day, Of the intensely modern fashion Of cutting wholly loose from these early mind associations, when he forced himself to record the conviction, the great companion is dead. The mental supremacy of the cultured Greek lay in his retention of his mythological traditions, not in their gross forms but in the ennobling transfiguration Of them into symbols Of the beauties and wonders of nature.
