Download or read book The Speeches Addresses and Writing of Cassius M Clay Jr written by Cassius Marcellus Clay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Speeches, Addresses and Writing of Cassius M. Clay, Jr.: Including a Biographical Sketch The common ancestor of the historic Clays of Kentucky is believed to have been John Clay, a native of England, who came to Virginia as a Grenadier of the British Army during Bacon's Rebellion. From him it is said Green Clay, pioneer, soldier and statesman, was descended, who was born in Powhatan County, Virginia, August 14th, 1757, and who emigrated to Kentucky when about twenty years of age. He was well educated, a good mathematician and a surveyor. The large bodies of Blue Grass land which he acquired laid the foundation of the ample estate which he left behind him. Kentucky, which was then a part of Virginia, elected him its Representative in the Virginia Legislature and afterward chose him its delegate to ratify the Federal Constitution. He afterward, when Kentucky became a State, was elected a member of the Convention which formed the Constitution of 1799. Thereafter he served in the Legislature several successive terms, during one of which he was elected Speaker. He enlisted as a volunteer in the war of 1812, rose to the rank of Brigadier General, and was placed by Governor Shelby in command of 3,000 Kentucky troops sent to raise the siege of Fort Meigs, a task which he skillfully and gallantly accomplished. After the close of the war he retired to his princely estate in Madison County, where he died on October 31, 1828, in the seventy-second year of his age. To General Green Clay were born seven children, three sons and four daughters, of whom Brutus J. Clay, the father of the subject of this sketch, born in 1808, was the second son. Another son was Cassius M. Clay, soldier, diplomat and writer, who took a prominent part in the Anti-Slavery Controversy which ended in the Civil War. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speech of Cassius M. Clay Before the Law Department of the University of Albany, N. Y: February 3, 1863 The founders of our Republic were not ignorant of this fact: and, in the enacting clause of the Constitution, they declared one of its great objects to be, to establish justice. Tautological was it then in them to include liberty, among their purposes. For, without justice, there is no liberty; and what is liberty but justice - which, perceiv ing the true relation of all things, obeys them? Theseeternal relations of things are laws. Well may it then be said, that without law, there is no liberty. I stand before you the defender of law. A citizen of the United States, and a Republican, I would vindicate my party, and my country; for I believe they are one. I stand by the Union, the Constitution, and the laws. T 116 Constitution as it is. The Union as our designed it: as it ought to be: based not upon injustice, usurping the name of law; but truly upon the law of nature, and of nature's God. First, then, we claim the name of Republican, be cause it best represents what we are; it is a good name: let us never abandon it It is not our fault, in this crisis of life and death to the nation, that party names and party organizations are revived. I ardently hoped that, in this struggle for our national being, all citizens of the United States of America would have stood for them, in support of their chosen powers that -be. But the Democratic party has decreed otherwise: and we have nothing left but to accept the issue. I accept it with reluctance, but not with fear. I have no personal enmities to avenge the friends of my country are my friends: the enemies of my country are my enemies. If we are right, we will stand if we are wrong, we will fall. It is a signifi cant fact, that, the foes of our Republic abroad, in the rebel States, and in our Northern homes, all take common ground against us.
