The first section deals with history, and contains chapters on writing groups inside academic institutions--such as college literary societies like Harvard's Spy Club and Hasty Pudding Club--and groups outside of academic institutions, which started out mainly as mutual improvement groups and are still prevalent. In the second section, which covers writing group theory, are chapters on collaborative learning (as opposed to the common image of writing in isolation) and theories of language development (mainly Marxist and structuralist). Implications of writing groups are the focus of the third section, which includes a chapter of suggestions for writing group formation and activities, and a chapter on theories of literacy that concentrates on its social aspects. It's the people who both honestly critique us and teach us better techniques who are the most valuable to our long-term success as Authors. Those people are the Mentors. Not all writing groups are good for us, though. Some groups are filled with members who hurt us. Their critiques are not given with love and support but with jealousy and vindictiveness. Some writers critique to harm, aiming their comments at the heart of the writer instead of the words on the page, or worse yet, they take pleasure in outright killing another writer's spirit. I call those people the Freeloaders. They take all of the good that a writing group has to offer, but they give nothing of value in return. Using my 20+ years as a member and leader of various writing groups in different parts of the country, I discuss what qualities to look for in a Mentor; various Freeloaders to beware of; how to transform a toxic writing group into a healthy group one member at a time; and the various methods of leading writing groups that I've found most effective. She explores the relationship between particular notions of intellectual property within each group as well as the effectiveness of writing groups that embrace these notions. Addressing the negotiations between the public and private domains of writing within these groups, she discovers that for both the committed writers and the novices, “values associated with textual ownership play a crucial role in writing group performance.” Spigelman discusses textual ownership, intellectual property, and writing group processes and then reviews theories relating to authorship and knowledge making. After introducing the participants in each group, discussing their texts, and describing their workshop sessions, she examines the writers’ avowed and implied beliefs about exchanging ideas and protecting individual property rights. Spigelman stresses the necessary tension between individual and social aspects of writing practices: She argues for the need to foster more collaborative activity among student writers by replicating the processes of writers working in nonacademic settings but also contends that all writers must be allowed to imagine their individual agency and authority as they compose.
