Book excerpt: Most students of the Restoration know quite a bit about Alexander Campbell. Barton W. Stone is usually known for preaching in an 1801 revival at Cane Ridge (most don't know about the Pentecostal-ish goings on there), and later for joining forces with Alexander Campbell. These are probably the only two things most people know about him (if they even know those). This book seeks to correct that-and not necessarily just put-ting Barton W. Stone back into his place in Restoration Movement history, but also his whole movement, which included more men than just him. The "New Light" Christians never referred to themselves by that name, but the author of this book uses it as a convenient way to distinguish them from other localized groups who also called themselves "Christians" or the "Christian Church" (specifically, James O'Kelly's "Christian Church" in the south, and Abner Jones and Elias Smith's "Christian Church" or "Christian Connexion" in New England). So don't let his use of the name cloud your view of the information. The author was connected with the Disciples of Christ, the most liberal branch of the Restoration Movement, but this fact does not come across in the following pages. All footnotes are original to this work, except for ones marked "Editor," which have been added for this updated edition. We hope you find this work interesting and beneficial to your understanding of Restoration Movement history.

Gerhart embraced German idealism rather than Scottish philosophy in his scholarship. As a mediating theologian, he attempted to reconcile historical Christianity with modern culture. Together they were a major contribution to the Mercersburg Movement in particular and American theology in general from the antebellum period to the progressive era. The comparisons highlight the contingent nature of particular settlements and narratives, and reveal the extent to which the definition of religious radicalism was dependent upon immediate context and show that radicalism and dissent were truly transnational phenomena. The historiography of the so-called radical reformation has been unduly shaped by the hostile categories imposed by mainstream or magisterial reformers during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This volume argues that scholars should adopt an open-ended understanding of evangelical reform, and recognize that the boundaries between radicalism and its opposite were not always firmly drawn. The distinction between the two is an inheritance of the Lutheran Reformation of the 1520s, which shaped not only the later course of the Reformation in the Holy Roman Empire but also attitudes towards and writings on religious dissent in the Netherlands and England. Radical critique is immanent within mainstream Protestantism, in a faith that emphasizes the power of the gospel with its unrelenting demands.

Book excerpt: How Victorian novels imagined the idea of social agency. Reform Acts offers a new approach to prominent questions raised in recent studies of the novel. By examining social agency from a historical rather than theoretical perspective, Chris R. Vanden Bossche investigates how particular assumptions involving agency came into being. Through readings of both canonical and noncanonical Victorian literature, he demonstrates that the Victorian tension between reform and revolution framed conceptions of agency in ways that persist in our own time. Vanden Bossche argues that Victorian novels sought to imagine new forms of social agency evolving from Chartism, the dominant working-class movement of the time. Novelists envisioned alternative forms of social agency by employing contemporary discourses from Chartism's focus on suffrage as well as the means through which it sought to obtain it, such as moral versus physical force, land reform, and the cooperative movement. Each of the three parts of Reform Acts begins with a chapter that analyzes contemporary conversations and debates about social agency in the press and in political debate. Succeeding chapters examine how novels envision ways of effecting social change, for example, class alliance in Barnaby Rudge; landed estates as well as finely graded hierarchy and politicians in Coningsby and Sybil; and reforming trade unionism in Mary Barton and North and South. By including novels written from a range of political perspectives, Vanden Bossche discovers patterns in Victorian thinking that are easily recognized in today’s assumptions about social hierarchy.
