Book Escaping the Maze of Spiritual Abuse

Download or read book Escaping the Maze of Spiritual Abuse written by Lisa Oakley and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2019-06-20 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Authority and rigour ... great generosity and gentleness. The authors diagnose a critical problem in the church and offer practical advice on how to fix it.' Andrew Graystone, theologian, broadcaster and communications consultant ‘Every time he wanted me to do something, he would quote scripture... I couldn’t argue with scripture, it was like arguing with God.’ The term ‘spiritual abuse’ is widely used across the Christian community. But what is it? Sometimes spiritual abuse involves leaders misusing their position, but ministers can also be the victims. Common factors include control through misuse of scripture, claims to divine authority, pressure to conform, and enforced accountability. Individuals may be isolated, and compelled to secrecy and silence. Drawing on a combination of extensive research, individual testimonies, and years of hands-on experience, Lisa Oakley and Justin Humphreys describe clearly the nature of spiritual abuse, and the best ways of countering it. Recovery is possible. But – how do we prevent spiritual abuse in the first place? What can leaders do to create safer places? Is there a link between theological ideas and harmful behaviours? How can leaders create opportunities for spiritual and emotional flourishing? Dr Lisa Oakley has researched spiritual abuse in the Christian faith in the UK since 2003. Justin Humphreys is chief executive of the safeguarding charity thirtyone: eight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of what worship looks like from a biblical standpoint and why the topic of worship can be so contentious among Christians. Because worship is inherently theological--because it's a manifestation of humanity's response to God's holiness--it's important to take seriously how we worship and the roles it serves in personal displays of adoration and in community with other believers. Exploring the Worship Spectrum provides an overview, critique, and celebration of six prominent worship styles: Formal-Liturgical – represented by Paul Zahl Traditional Hymn-Based – represented by Harold Best Contemporary Music-Driven – represented by Joe Horness Charismatic – represented by Don Williams Blended – represented by Robert Webber Emerging – represented by Sally Morgenthaler This unique format allows those with a heart for worship to compare different perspectives and draw their own conclusions on what the Bible teaches. It allows readers to understand the various approaches to worship, carefully evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, and make personal choices without adopting a judgmental spirit. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Book I Will Sing the Wondrous Story

Download or read book I Will Sing the Wondrous Story written by David W. Music and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptists have a long and rich heritage of congregational song. The hymns Baptists have sung and the books from which they have sung them have been shaping forces for Baptist theology, worship, and piety. Baptist authors and composers have provided songs that have made an impact not only among Baptists in America but also across denominational and geographic lines. Congregational singing continues to be a key component of Baptist worship in the twenty-first century. Beginning with an overview of the British background, this book is a survey of the history of Baptist hymnody in America from Baptist beginnings in the New World to the present. Its intent is to help the reader better understand the background against which current Baptist congregational song practices operate. Unlike earlier writings on the subject, this book provides both comprehensive coverage and a continuous narrative. It gives thorough attention to the major Baptist bodies in America as well as calling attention to the contributions of significant smaller groups. The British Baptist background is dealt with in an introductory section. The book also includes many texts and tunes as illustrations of the topics being discussed and focuses on some of the contributions of Baptist authors and composers to the repertory of congregational song. Book Mazes in Videogames

Download or read book Mazes in Videogames written by Alison Gazzard and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the text adventures of Zork, to the arcade game of Pac-Man, to the corridors of Doom, and on to the city streets of Grand Theft Auto IV, the maze has often been used as a space to trap and confuse players in their navigation of gameworlds. However, the maze as a construction on the landscape has a long history before the invention of the videogame. By examining the change in the maze from the landscapes of open spaces and closed gardens through to the screen of the videogame, both mazes and labyrinths are discussed in terms of historical reference, alongside the author's personal experiences of walking and playing these structures. This book shows how our cultural experiences of real world maze landscapes may have changed, and how we negotiate videogame worlds along the various paths and meanings they so often create for us.

Book Theology in the Service of the Church

Download or read book Theology in the Service of the Church written by Timothy George and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title bridges the chasm between church and academy. This volume celebrates the life and work of Fisher H. Humphreys, a noted Baptist theologian whose teachings and writings have shaped several generations of pastors, missionaries, and theological students. Humphreys has said about his own life's work: 'My theology is church theology. I do thinking about God in the fellowship of the church'. Since 1990, Humphreys has taught systematic theology at Beeson Divinity School of Samford University, following an even longer tenure on the faculty of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Written by Humphreys' colleagues and friends, the essays here illuminate various aspects of the theologian's calling from the standpoint of specific theological disciplines and from the intersection of theology with other areas of Christian life and thought. In this way, Fisher Humphreys' self-understanding of his own vocation as a theologian of the church is commended and the importance of thinking clearly and faithfully about God in the fellowship of the church is seen to be a vital component in the life of the faith.

Book Baptists and Worship

    Book Details:
  • Author : R. Scott Connell
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2020-11-30
  • ISBN : 1725271591
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Baptists and Worship written by R. Scott Connell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship is dialogue. It is more than that, but it is not less than that. The way Baptists have worshiped for three and a half centuries demonstrates this consistently, in spite of their penchant for freedom and autonomy. No one tells Baptists how to order their worship services. They don't have a common liturgy that they must follow, and yet their services look remarkably similar. This is largely due to two controlling factors in their worship: The Bible that they embrace as inspired, inerrant, authoritative, and sufficient; and the Christ-revealing gospel that is contained within its pages. When the word of God is followed closely, a shape for worship order begins to emerge. It is the same "gospel-shape" that is found throughout the Bible. When the word of God is applied to a worship service in which God and his people are engaged in a worship conversation, a consistent contour of gospel elements and content begins to emerge that reveals the glory of the Christ we gather to worship. He is so glorious that when we behold him, we are transformed into the same image from one degree to another. This is the power of corporate worship (2 Cor 3).

Book Canadian Pentecostals the Trinity and Contemporary Worship Music

Download or read book Canadian Pentecostals the Trinity and Contemporary Worship Music written by Michael A. Tapper and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a landmark analysis of the trinitarian impulses in contemporary worship music used by the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC). It considers whether the lyrics from the most commonly used PAOC songs are consistent with this Evangelical group’s trinitarian statement of faith. Colin Gunton’s trinitarian theology provides the theological rationale for eight original and qualitative content analyses of these songs. Three major areas are considered—the doctrine of God, human personhood, and cosmology. Making use of Gunton’s notions of relationality, particularity, and perichoresis, along with several key Pentecostal scholars, this book serves as a helpful descriptive and prescriptive theological resource for the dynamic practice of a trinitarian faith.
