THE World's Parliament of Religions, undertaken in the ardent desire of removing the prejudices that separate the various religions of mankind, to the end that the truth may be recognised and made known in the world, has found a surprising response in the hearts of the people* It has created a movement that will both increase and endure; and since it will be a powerful factor in future history that will work for peace and good-will throughout the earth, the Committee of the World's Religious Parliament Extension trust that the Sovereign Authorities of all countries, whether of government or of religion, will graciously give their favorable attention to its far-reaching significance. For the promotion of this great cause, the Secretary of the Religious Parliament Extension has been authorized to have articles, stating the most salient facts of the movement, printed in a suitable foim for presentation to the highest dignitaries both of church and of state; and feeling that it is a serious duty to be obeyed, as well as a high privilege to be enjoyed the undersigned has entered upon the work assigned to him, and ventures to submit the accompanying publication with the hope that it will prove fruitful of good results. With profound respect, Paul Carus, PhD, Secretary of the Religious Parliament Extension. Chicago, Illinois, January 1, 1896.

Book The World s Parliament of Religions

Download or read book The World s Parliament of Religions written by Richard Hughes Seager and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1893 World's Parliament of Religions was much more than a religious assembly. It was conceived as a presentation of the major religious forces at work in the late nineteenth century. The goal of the Parliament was "to unite all religion against irreligion," and many observers celebrated that spirit. Some saw the Parliament as a sign of the coming fulfillment of missionaries' hope to evangelize the world, but others saw it as a disaster for missionaries. Some thought it proved the superiority of Christianity; others saw a victory for the religions of the East. Some thought the Parliament pointed toward the coming unity of all Christians, while for others it seemed a revelation of the forces dividing Christendom. Seager's beautifully fashioned narrative explores this fascinating event in all its complexities and establishes it as truly a watershed event in the emergence of a more pluralistic religious culture in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reexamines the meaning and significance of the first World's Parliament of Religions and its impact on the development of the academic study of religion. Held in Chicago in 1893, the Parliament attracted the participation of religious leaders from different faiths and a smaller number of academics who studied religion from what they called "scientific" perspectives. Following an introduction by the editor, the essays are organized into three sections. Part I reissues six papers on comparative religion from the Parliament's original proceedings. Part II contains two articles, both written within a year of the Parliament, that express an early appraisal of the significance of the Parliament for world religious history and the comparative study of religion. A third and final Part contains eight contemporary essays reassessing the Parliament itself and its impact on interfaith dialogue and comparative religion.
