Book The World s Great Religious Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The World s Great Religious Poetry Classic Reprint written by Caroline Miles Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Great Religious Poetry The most obvious facts about this collection of poetry are that it is not all great and that it makes strange combinations and sequences. It ranges from the Psalms of David and the Hymn of Cleanthes to the latest free verse. The great hymns that are translated from the Latin and the most radical of the twentieth century verse are alike only in that they show human feeling about the concept that is the foundation of all religion. Many poems that are far from being great belong here because they are significant. There are some persons who say that our age has no religion; others say it is more sincerely religious than any of the great ages of faith that are gone. 1the most intelligent thought of the present bases the authority of religion, not upon revelation, but upon the nature of man. Man's hunger for God is as funda mental and legitimate as his hunger for food and love. Our age may be lost as to what it should believe, but we were never so sure that we must and do believe. The good swimmer knows best how to trust the water; the best life is most reliant upon what some call the Integrity of the Universe and one of the greatest poets called the Everlasting Arms. The great poets have always spoken with authority. In them has the Word been made flesh. Now a war-weary world in search of faith turns to them. The Bible is an anthology of Hebrew literature-the Great Anthology. If no future poets ever rise to so great a height of constructive imagination as those of the classic Hebrew period it will always remain the Bible of the race. A cursory view of other religious poetry shows little that is not based upon the biblical poetry, but the spiritual assets of mankind have never been gathered together that we may see what they are. This book is a step in that direction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections of Religious Poetry He must dwell deep indeed whose heart Can thus fulfil true wisdom's part. Not in our own spontaneous will Can we the world shut out, Say to our passions, peace be still, Or check each rising doubt; Alone, by prayer 'tis slowly won, In the world's throng too rarely done. How needful is it then for man From things of time to steal, Those of Eternity to scan, Their magnitude to feel? The first are transitory, vain, The last forever will remain. Retirement must adjust the beam, And prayer must poise the scales. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Thought in Old English Verse IN the following pages I have endeavoured to illustrate the main current of religious thought in English poetry through the long period of 1100 years which elapsed between Caedmon and the end of the last century. I am careful to say the main current. It has been an interest and a pleasure to me to trace through' each passing century the general stream of religious thought flowing steadily and calmly on, affected far less than might have been expected by the changing circumstances and questions of the time. Those deeper and more personal feelings which so often find a natural and appropriate vent in poetry have little in common with the spirit of controversy. In religious poetry, so far as it is the language of the heart, even the Reformation itself, great as the move ment was, made itself felt not so much in the disputa tious and argumentative form which it displayed in most prose writings of that period, but simply, for the. Download or read book Early Religious Poetry of the Hebrews Classic Reprint written by Edward George King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Religious Poetry of the Hebrews The title Early Religious Poetry of the Hebrews needs a further definition. It is intended to embrace the Poetry of Old Testament times as distinguished from the Poetry of the Synagogue. This will fix our period. But what are we to under stand by Religious Poetry? The Poet is the man whose whole being is in touch with those voices of God that we call Nature. He may, or he may not, be a religious man. In other words, he may, or he may not, recognise the Source of those voices. The Prophet, on the other hand, is the man whose whole being is in touch with the voices of God in Humanity. He must be, more or less, a poet, in the sense in which we have defined the word, but his chief sphere will be the poetry of life. His message will necessarily be conditioned by the age in which he lives. He has his treasure in an earthen vessel and he prophesies in part. The different productions have been arranged upon a general plan, commencing with the lessons which Nature teaches, and ascending to the highest anticipations of Christian faith. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Best Poetry, Vol. 4 of 10 Christmas Eve, we are caught up and carried onward by an unflinching and overcoming faith. Perhaps the most convincing arguments for re ligious reality in Browning's poems are those of An Epistle and of Cleon, where the cry of the human soul for the assurance which the Christian faith supplies is given such a penetrat ing voice. And there is no reasoning about the Incarnation, in any theological book that I have ever read, which seems to me so cogent as that great passage in Saul, where David cries.
