Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eternal Religion Amid the seeming confusions of our time there is, amongst leading minds, growing into ever clearer vision the main lines of the structure which, when fully in view, will be recognised by humanity as the Eternal Religion The earlier theologies were advance sketches which, we are now coming to see, were not only incomplete but, in important respects, were wrongly drawn. We are better equipped to-day than the older framers of systems. We are in a more favourable position for discerning between the evanescent and the permanent, between what are essentials and what are matters of detail. It is the peculiar privilege of our age to have come into possession at once of the entire heritage of the past centuries, with their vast endeavours after ultimate truth, and at the same time of a scientific method for assaying their results. In what I have here advanced I have tried to utilise the advantages of that position. I have kept always before me the idea of religion as at once a principle and a history. Its story, properly considered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Eternal Religion The Right Hon'ble Mr. Asquith expressed the pious hope at the historic meeting of Parliament in connection with the Armistice that War may become an anachronism in future. In this he echoed the universal wish. Every one is thinking of plans at this moment for making the coming peace permanent on earth. Anything that should tend towards lessening the chance of falling out between men - whatever might be the source of dissension - was worthy of attention as a means towards the desired end. The steady elimination of every element of strife should be the aim of our united efforts. Religion is no longer the ruling factor in human affairs it once was. Nevertheless as a motive force of thought and action it is second to none even in the West, while in the East its predominance is maintained to this day. To us Hindus, for example, Religion is still all in all. There is hardly any fear now of nations flying at each other's throat for the sake of Religion, Yet it cannot be denied that sectarian bigotry and, religious fanaticism are still things to be reckoned with, not only in the case of Orientals but also of Occidentals. It Is significant in view of our context that the cleavage in regard to Home Rule in Ireland has followed the line of division in the population according to religious persuasion. Broadly speaking, the difference in the salient national characteristics of Prussia and Austria, the inhabitants of both countries being mainly of the same ethnic stock, is due chiefly to religious causes. One still hears of Jew-baiting-here and there in Europe. The Turkish Empire affords a vivid illustration of ceaseless discord between jarring sects and creeds. Book Sacred Scriptures of World Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sacred Scriptures of World Religion Classic Reprint written by Martin Kellogg Schermerhorn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sacred Scriptures of World-Religion For the student, as books of reference they are invaluable; but for practical purposes - that is, as books of devotion, of devout instruction, or of ethical guidance and suggestion they are unquestionably confusing as well as cumbersome and inconvenient. So much irrelevant matter of mere history, genealogy, inci dent, explanation, repetition, etc, is (quite naturally) included, that they become like metamorphic rocks or alluvial soils, from which much rubbish must be cleared away before one can get at the embedded gold. For practical purposes the gold should be ready at hand and in a convenient form. So for practical purposes the practical instructions and suggestions of the Bibles of the World should be separated from the mass of history, genealogy, and detail, so that eye and mind may at once apprehend their meaning and be quickened by their timely inspirations. The want of such a selection is widely felt by all catholic-spirited ministers in Pulpits, teachers in Sunday-schools and in Day-schools, parents in Homes, and individuals in hours of Devotion. To answer this want, in some measure at least, this volume has been prepared. From the Bibles of the World all has been selected that seems of practical value, for purposes either of moral instruction or of devout inspiration. May these selections stand as confirmations of the truth and beauty of all Divine Revelations and, at the same time, bear living testimony to the fact that, In times past the Eternal One has not left Himself without a witness in any nation; but' hath from time to time raised up prophets among them all such as they were able to hear. As to the selections made and parts omitted, it is inevitable that a compiler of any sort can never hope to satisfy the taste and judgment of all. What one would retain another would reject; what one would reject, another would retain. Some would retain all, and some would reject all. So, on his own taste and judgment must every compiler rely; and, especially in such a serious matter as attempting to tamper with Sacred Writ must one be prepared for criticism, and for finding that personal satisfaction and benefit are the only compensation to be received from even one's most studious and devout labors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man an Eternal Probationer OF course all questions referring to the future years of time or relating to the coming ages of eternity are obliged to be more or less speculative and uncertain. And for this reason they must be in a large measure merely conjectures put forth by us concerning certain things, as we have conceived them in our minds, which may or may not come to pass as we have anticipated. Now these suppositions, or guesses, are gener ally, as we think, based safely and discreetly upon the ad mitted facts and recognized disclosures of divine revelation, or upon the clear discoveries and established developments in the natural sciences, as we understand and accept them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical and the Eternal Christ This short discussion of the relation of Christianity to its historical basis originally formed one of a series of lectures delivered in the Scottish Churches College, Calcutta, and intended for an educated Indian audience. I should not have entertained the idea of publishing the lecture in its present form, had it not been for the urgency of a Bengali friend, Mr. G. C. Ghosh, of Calcutta, who also generously insisted on defraying any expenses incurred in publication. I desire to ofi'er my sincerest thanks to Mr. Ghosh for his kindness, and to express the hope that the thoughts here presented may be of some slight use to any who are reflecting upon a problem of such vital importance for the Christian faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Religion: A Gospel of Love Whether such imperfection be but the proof of incomplete development, as the evolutionist would teach, or the result of some lapse from original perfection, as others hold, it is evident that the reformer of whatever name, should do his utmost to ascertain both the nature and extent of the infirmity he seeks to cure, before commencing his medication. There should be diagnosis. All Religions seek to bring men to ideal perfection - seek to qualify them for dwelling with the eternal. Religion, therefore, is the reformer of highest preten sions. There are Religions, old and new, but their success as reformers has not been reassuring. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Thoughts on Eternal Life

Download or read book Thoughts on Eternal Life written by William R. Hart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on Eternal Life: A Series of Occasional Tracts "A man named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, came to Jesus by night." - John iii, 1, 2. The Greek word here translated "ruler" is "Archon," a title denoting authority and exalted rank. In other places this word is translated "Prince." In addition to this the Lord Jesus, during the interview from which the above sentence is quoted, addresses Nicodemus as a "Teacher in Israel." By birthright he was a member of God's chosen and separated nation. By his upright and moral life in obedience to written law, he doubtless, like Saul of Tarsus and other zealous Jews, considered life eternal his just due. As a devout Hebrew, as Ruler, as Doctor of Divinity (for that is the modern equivalent of his title), he stands before us in the sacred page as a representative Israelite, - specimen from a nation which Omnipotent Wisdom had specially chosen from among all the peoples of the earth, and had educated, disciplined, and trained. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
