Download or read book The Thames Hudson Dictionary of Photography written by Nathalie Herschdorfer and published by . This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a comprehensive, accessible and authoritative illustrated reference to the history, art and science of photography. In one single, elegant volume, it features over 300 iconic photographs and contains more than 1,200 concise yet fully detailed entries on all aspects of the subject. Though much information can today be found online, locating it takes time and sources can have questionable provenance and uncertain academic credentials. All previous dictionaries of photography are now outdated, as well, focusing either on the famous and influential practitioners of the genre or presented as mere glossaries of technical terms. This landmark publication, newly available in paperback, is the culmination of ten years of development and research. Working with an international expert panel of 150 consultants and 79 researchers, Nathalie Herschdorfer has triumphed in creating the first source of information for all scholars, practitioners and collectors of photography to turn to in the future.

Book excerpt: Filled with high-quality colour and black and white images taken by the leading names in photography, this celebration of the female form is a best-seller. The popularity of erotic photography since the invention of the camera is undeniable and this book is an excellent guide to the techniques and fashions in erotic photography since the mid-19th century. Focussing on the greatest photographers in this field, Erotique is an indispensable reference work for the informed or the lay audience. The arena of erotic photography is a popular and controversial one and in recent years its demand and the surrounding furore have increased dramatically. That it should still induce moral outrage in such liberal days as these is proof that the naked form, a subject for artists for 2000 years, confounds people and poses more questions than answers. Erotique celebrates the beauty of the naked female form with a collection of the most exciting and significant photographs in this field.

Download or read book Helmut Newton Archives de Nuit written by Helmut Newton and published by Schirmer Mosel. This book was released on 1993 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gets its name from 60 unusually dark and cryptic photographs. When Newton opened his "Archives of the Night" in the 90's, gloomy images emerged like flocks of bats. His famous "Domestic Nudes" appeared in pairs and tableaus together with sinister landscapes. Palace architecture was displayed next to morbid vanitas paintings as were bodies cut open from an anatomical museum of wax figures, placed on show alongside a portrait of a Dracula star putting on his make-up. With the Archives, Newton, who decided on the placement of these works himself, showed us his dark side. But at the same time, he was amusing himself with grey areas - also typical for Newton. The juxtaposition of seemingly disparate motifs created new and enigmatic relationships that oscillate between satire and poetry, brutality and gentleness, irony and pathos.
