Book The World of Coronaspeak

Download or read book The World of Coronaspeak written by John C. Maher and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-04 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the concept of Coronaspeak, the language adopted by the global community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic; it involves jokes, slang, public health slogans, cliché, and coronalit (corona related literature). In Coronaspeak we see new vocabulary and coinage like solomoon (honeymoon without the honey), elbow bump or Coronafussgruss (German, ‘corona foot-greeting’), variant labelling in the Greek alphabet (omicron and delta), new drug naming (AstraZeneca), medical jargon (pathogen, R number), semi-technical (spillover, variant) and common expressions (stale air, rebound), and informal speech, dialect and nonce words (jab, jag, and ‘the lurgi’). The book highlights the capacity of words to adapt to shock and social disorder, and argues that they are part of disaster management, with entries from Italian, French, Japanese, German and Korean, taken from scholarly articles and print and internet sources.

Book Touch in the Time of Corona

Download or read book Touch in the Time of Corona written by Henriette Steiner and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-09-20 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chronicle, a memoir, a reflection on the pandemic, and a cultural analysis of the new spatial, social, and epistemological forms that have arisen with it, this volume weaves together cultural history, aesthetics, and urban and digital studies. It looks at the particular ways in which the possibilities for touch, touching and being touched, both physically and affectively, are reconfigured by the pandemic. How are love, care, and humanity’s complex relationships with technology and nature played out in the interval between abandoned city centres and digitally mediated gatherings? How can we comprehend the reconfiguration of relationships through the human response to the pandemic as an experience that concerns us all but affects each of us in different ways? How do we think through the technological and material dependencies that the pandemic situation establishes? And how does this allow us to imagine the world beyond the pandemic—both utopian and dystopian? The essays in this book explore the new forms of intimacy and distance that are developing in the wake of COVID-19, offering a distinctive, topical analysis in the fields of urban and digital studies.

Book Dawning of the Corona Age

Download or read book Dawning of the Corona Age written by Johnny Freedom and published by . This book was released on 2020-08 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short, though comprehensive book, goes far beyond the immediate impact of the "pandemic", but, along with the reader, imagines how our human world may be altered, both positively and negatively, long into an uncertain future. Clearly, the economic, political and social impact is more long-lasting and harmful to human life than a seasonal infectious disease such as a generic "coronavirus" (i.e., a medical term that can imply a common cold or influenza) which generally fades in the summer and rises in the winter months every year. The overarching tyranny and authoritarian control systems being imposed are far more devastating in both the short and long-term effects than this virus. This pandemic has revealed the psychological makeup of our modern society, how fearful, apathetic and obedient many of us have become, how spoiled for comfort and convenience, how quickly some of us blame others for our problems and refuse to take responsibility, and how thoroughly we can avoid, resist and ignore the truth.Yet others are seeing the light at the end of this tunnel, the opportunity which may present ourselves to create a better world, not a dystopian nightmare. After being bombarded with contradictory and confusing health advice by numerous public health "experts" and our "friends" on social media, how can any of us remain in denial about the profound and life-changing implications of the rapid changes being foisted upon us. If we take off the blindfolds, we might very likely see a pre-planned and well-orchestrated pandemic, a "plandemic"? Let's remove the blindfolds and masks, take notice what's actually happening around us. It's to our benefit to do so.Let's take a good look at what we have learned so far and see how we can still "live free in an unfree world". Together, let's imagine a "Dawning of the Corona Age!"

Book excerpt: This book was specifically designed due to the highly noted need to discuss the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in a child friendly language with our children, students and young clients. As occupational therapy practitioners, we strive to bring awareness and solutions to everyday issues. COVID-19 has impacted every human being world-wide and has altered their life and daily functions in one way or another. Through this book, we aspire to enhance the children's overall quality of life by discussing various possibilities of play, family time and academics following new safety guidelines through a memorable book experience. We aim to diminish the fear of COVID-19 as it can have a negative impact on a child's overall mental and physical well-being. Instead, we hope to educate and transform the young readers into their own superheroes by using creativity and exploration. Additionally, we hope to ensure that children never feel alone or isolated during this vital time in our lives, and that they can freely look up to their own everyday superheroes such as their parents, caregivers, teachers and more. By instilling these "superhero support systems" in all children, our motive is to build up the confidence needed for them to take on the world through the education of proper hygiene to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in a positive and playful way.

Book Rethinking Heritage in Precarious Times

Download or read book Rethinking Heritage in Precarious Times written by Nick Shepherd and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking Heritage in Precarious Times sets a fresh agenda for Heritage Studies by reflecting upon the unprecedented nature of the contemporary moment. In doing so, the volume also calls into question established ideas, ways of working, and understandings of the future. Presenting contributions by leading figures in the field of Heritage Studies, Indigenous scholars, and scholars from across the global north and global south, the volume engages with the most pressing issues of today: coloniality, the climate emergency, the Covid-19 pandemic, structural racism, growing social and economic inequality, and the ongoing struggle for dignity and restitution.Considering the impact of climate change, chapters re-imagine museums for climate action, explore the notion of a world heritage for the Anthropocene, and reflect on heritage and posthumanism. Drawing inspiration from the global demonstrations against racism, police violence and authoritarianism, chapters explore the notion of a people’s heritage, draw on local and Indigenous conceptualizations to lay out a notion of heritage in the service of social justice and restitution, and detail the precariousness of universities and heritage institutions in the global south. Analysing the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, chapters also explore the changing nature of life under lockdown, describe its effects on theories of urbanity, and reflect on emergent Covid socialities and heritage-in-the-making. Rethinking Heritage in Precarious Times argues that we need the deep-time perspective that Heritage Studies offers, as well as its sense of transgenerational conversations and accountabilities, in order to respond to these many challenges—and to craft open, creative, and inclusive futures. It will be essential reading for academics and students engaged in the study of heritage, anthropology, memory, history, and geography.

CALL Theory Applications for Online TESOL Education is a crucial reference work that focuses on online education and CALL in the context of teaching English to speakers of other languages. It includes chapters that focus on technology-enhanced learning in a variety of configurations, from fully online contexts to face-to-face blended learning contexts that have some degree of a virtual component. While highlighting topics that include e-learning, second language acquisition, and virtual learning environments, this book is ideal for TESOL educators and CALL practitioners who are interested in the ways in which language and culture are impacted by online education. Moreover, K-12 teachers and teacher educators working with linguistically and culturally diverse learners in their classes and communities, as well as administrators, academicians, researchers, and students will benefit from the research contained in this book.

Download or read book Disruptive Inclusion written by Jen Smith and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2024-03-31 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Christian adult learning? What questions are raised when Christian faith and learning meet? Many existing approaches primarily address issues such as curriculum content or teacher character. Building on the work of John Hull, Disruptive Inclusion approaches the intersection of theology and pedagogy suggesting that the christianness of Christian adult learning is best expressed by the posture adopted by learners, not only via what is taught and by whom. Specifically, Jen Smith claims that a key to Christian adult learning posture is how learners include the unexpected and disruptive in their learning. Drawing on key resources, such as the biblical narrative, Christian tradition, liturgy, community and her own experiences, Jen takes us on a deeply personal and practical journey into disruptive inclusion and invites us to re-imagine what effective Christian adult learning might look like in the classroom, pulpit and online learning settings.

Download or read book The Language of Illness written by Fergus Shanahan and published by Liberties Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of medicine has advanced dramatically in recent years, but the language used to discuss illness – by medical practitioners, patients and carers – has not kept pace. As a result, clinicians and, just as importantly, patients and their relatives and carers, are not able to communicate clearly in relation to illness. The upshot is misunderstanding and confusion on all sides. In this ground-breaking book, Dr Fergus Shanahan, an eminent gastroenterologist who has practised in Ireland, the United States and Canada, and published widely around the world, looks at memoirs of illness, and outlines the lessons we can learn from a better understanding of the words we use to describe illness. He looks at the ways in which language can act as a barrier with regard to illness, and proposes practical ways in which we can dismantle these barriers. The book is written for the general reader: as Dr Shanahan puts it himself, he is "enough of an expert to be wary of experts". The Language of Illness, part manifesto, part memoir, and part instruction manual, is an appeal for the use of clearer, more holistic language, by all those involved with, and affected by, illness. Like the great American poet-doctor William Carlos Williams, he aims to help us develop a new language by means of which we can develop a new way of living with illness – which is an integral part of the human condition. Put simply, it is a book for all those who care about caring.
