Book excerpt: darri-ba nungalinya From around the area where Rapid Creek, or Gurambai, flows out to where the waters of the Arafura and Timor seas mingle, one can view in the distance a rocky island that makes itself visible during low tide. This place is a registered Aboriginal sacred site known as Darri-ba Nungalinya (Old Man Rock). Darri-ba is a term of respect that means ‘old man’ and Nungalinya is the name of the first Larrakia man. The Larrakia are the traditional custodians of the land in and around Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is believed that Darri-ba Nungalinya protects the Larrakia people and their lands. It is only fitting, therefore, that when one visits this sacred site and its surrounds, one does so with respect and recognition for the powerful energies that are present in abundance.

Book The End of the World

Download or read book The End of the World written by John Leslie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are we in imminent danger of extinction? Yes, we probably are, argues John Leslie in his chilling account of the dangers facing the human race as we approach the second millenium. The End of the World is a sobering assessment of the many disasters that scientists have predicted and speculated on as leading to apocalypse. In the first comprehensive survey, potential catastrophes - ranging from deadly diseases to high-energy physics experiments - are explored to help us understand the risks. One of the greatest threats facing humankind, however, is the insurmountable fact that we are a relatively young species, a risk which is at the heart of the 'Doomsday Argument'. This argument, if correct, makes the dangers we face more serious than we could have ever imagined. This more than anything makes the arrogance and ignorance of politicians, and indeed philosophers, so disturbing as they continue to ignore the manifest dangers facing future generations.

Book excerpt: Just how near is the end of the world? Behind the veil of safety of everyday life in the West lurks the sinister reality of a chaotic universe. Doomsday reveals the very real threats posed to modern civilisation as the 21st century progresses, and asks the question: Is humanity on the path to destruction? War, famine, plague, global warming, nuclear meltdown: all have the potential to extinguish life on Earth forever. While our technology can help us overcome these perils, that same technology may itself contain the seeds of catastrophe. In fifty compelling essays, including entries on mega-tsunamis, a new ice-age, a giant meteor strike, nuclear holocaust and nanotechnology running amok, Doomsday depicts the possible scenarios of annihilation to come and assesses our chances of survival, if any.

Book To Abu Simbel and Back

    Book Details:
  • Author : Otto Schmalz
  • Publisher : FriesenPress
  • Release : 2021-11-09
  • ISBN : 1039120202
  • Pages : 457 pages

Download or read book To Abu Simbel and Back written by Otto Schmalz and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 2001, mere months after the deadly attacks in New York on 9/11, Otto Schmalz and his wife embarked on a journey to Egypt. With security being more stringent and fewer travellers venturing outside of their homelands, tourism in Egypt was down ninety percent, which made it easier to get a close look at the breath-taking monuments and temples. For fourteen days, Otto and his tour companions cruised the Nile for nine days as well as toured the remainder by bus and visited many temples along and away from that great river. It was an eye-opening experience to discover how advanced the ancient Egyptian empires were thousands of years ago. Rather than channelling their strength and ambition to conquering the world, the powerful Egyptians put their energies into building structures and artwork with their bare hands that had not been equaled anywhere else. From the massive pylons at the Luxor Temple to Abu Simbel and the Great Sphinx at Giza, Otto describes in detail the historical significance of the sites he visited during this incredible journey. He also relates his interesting interactions with the people (and some animals) that he came in contact with, from his knowledgeable tour guide to security guards to his colourful travel mates. To Abu Simbel and Back whisks the reader away to ancient Egypt and hopefully leaves them wanting to visit this incredible country in person.
