Download or read book The World Is Badly Made written by Thomas Corfield and published by Scribl. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In which bedlam threatens to envelope the world, unless Oscar can do something about it—which he's willing to consider, providing it involves an enormous breakfast first. When the palace of Arabesque’s aide d’camp, a cat named the Tremblees, stumbles upon a translation of an ancient language that reveals the existence of a fabled stone, he vows to find it for reasons of greed and vengeance. With a dead dog stuck to a car bonnet, some burst luggage, a blind bus driver and an enormous number of olives, it becomes a race for Oscar, his colleague Meesha and the Tieress of Arabesque to prevent the Tremblees plunging Arabesque back into the Era of Bedlam, a horror that plagued the land a thousand years ago. “Corfield blurs the boundary between rubbish and garbage, and does justice to neither.” - Aiden White, Barrington Points Lighthouse Keeper. “The plot is only held together by the book’s tangled and convoluted sentences.” - Tiffany Parlek, Mortal Goddess. “A two-in-the-morning page turner, but only because each one’s so hard to get through.” – Pannel Norbit, Curator of Exotic Fungal Infections.
Download or read book Poorly Made in China written by Paul Midler and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-12-03 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insider reveals what can—and does—go wrong when companies shift production to China In this entertaining behind-the-scenes account, Paul Midler tells us all that is wrong with our effort to shift manufacturing to China. Now updated and expanded, Poorly Made in China reveals industry secrets, including the dangerous practice of quality fade—the deliberate and secret habit of Chinese manufacturers to widen profit margins through the reduction of quality inputs. U.S. importers don’t stand a chance, Midler explains, against savvy Chinese suppliers who feel they have little to lose by placing consumer safety at risk for the sake of greater profit. This is a lively and impassioned personal account, a collection of true stories, told by an American who has worked in the country for close to two decades. Poorly Made in China touches on a number of issues that affect us all.

Download or read book Green and Gray written by Geoffrey G. O'Brien and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-04-09 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geoffrey G. O’Brien’s second collection documents the "remorse of the senses" that attends each moment of experience, the pain and pleasure of not exiting a world in which injustice and distraction secure every sensual event. Attempting to reestablish experience as something other than complicity, these poems insist on "desiring that which is as if it were not," making poetry out of neighborhood flyers, the Patriot Act, and the poverty of presidential speech. Given this mandate to stay within limited resources, Green and Gray makes a virtue of refusing to abandon them, often relying on an emphatic recirculation of words and phrases to generate its own system complexities. These are poems whose materials remember their former use: the gray of the city and the green it used to be.

Download or read book Marley Me written by John Grogan and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family and the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life. Now with photos and new material. Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans. John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same. Marley grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, and stole women's undergarments. Obedience school did no good -- Marley was expelled. But just as Marley joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley remained a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms. Marley & Me is John Grogan's funny, unforgettable tribute to this wonderful, wildly neurotic Lab and the meaning he brought to their lives.
Download or read book Made on Earth written by Wolfgang Korn and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a piece of clothing end up in your wardrobe? Where does it come from, and where does it go? This is not just a story about manufacturing. This is a story about people, their livelihoods and their life expectations. This is the story of globalisation. Made on Earth follows the incredible journey of a red fleece manufactured in Bangladesh. From the initial order through to shipping, recycling, and eventually landfill, Made on Earth explores how one single item can connect so many people's lives. Focusing not just on environmental but ethical trading concerns, Made on Earth ultimately explains and explores the concept of globalisation. Many hard-hitting topics are covered, including factory workers being imprisoned in Chittagong for campaigning for better working conditions, the power of oil rich countries such as the United Arab Emirates, and how the desire for cheap goods in developed countries impacts on the working practices of less developed nations. This book provides a fascinating, accessible and extremely engaging introduction to the complex topic of globalisation.

Download or read book The Risk of Being written by Michael Gelven and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Risk of Being attempts to forge a new language and a new way of reasoning about what it is like to be good and bad by focusing on existential phenomena that reveal what it means to be good and bad. It is thus a work that cannot be located among or compared to the more traditional theories of ethics or morality. What distinguishes this inquiry is not only the use of existential themes, such as outrage, temptation, and corruption, but the reasoning itself in an existential critique, which allows us to consider how and what we think as well as feel about being good and bad&—the logos and pathos of these existential phenomena&—and thus provides an access to the question about the reality of good and bad. Recognizing that we have done wrong may induce frustrated responses, such as, &"How could I have been so stupid?&" or &"Why was I so weak? &" or even, &"What has become of me? &" These reactions, Gelven argues, point to folly, weakness, and corruption as ways of being bad, which can then be countered in phenomena such as judgment, courage, and integrity of character, as ways of being good. The analyses of these phenomena can reveal a great deal of existential understanding that no mere ethical or moral approach can offer. The emphasis is on understanding that &"good&" and &"bad&" are not mere axiological terms, but can refer to ways of existing. By careful analysis, these ways can be forced to reveal the truth about goodness and badness. As Gelven's argument proceeds to show not only what it is &"like&" to be good and bad, but also what the reality of being good and bad must be, he offers new and often unorthodox insights into one of the great philosophical issues challenging the thinking mind.
