It tells the story of the antecedents and origins of WFP and growth from modest beginnings as a three-year experiment in 1963-65 to become the main source of international food aid for both disaster relief and development against the background of the evolution and development of food aid. Book Mitigating the Nutritional Impacts of the Global Food Price Crisis

Download or read book Mitigating the Nutritional Impacts of the Global Food Price Crisis written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007 and 2008, the world witnessed a dramatic increase in food prices. The global financial crisis that began in 2008 compounded the burden of high food prices, exacerbating the problems of hunger and malnutrition in developing countries. The tandem food price and economic crises struck amidst the massive, chronic problem of hunger and undernutrition in developing countries. National governments and international actors have taken a variety of steps to mitigate the negative effects of increased food prices on particular groups. The recent abrupt increase in food prices, in tandem with the current global economic crisis, threatens progress already made in these areas, and could inhibit future efforts. The Institute of Medicine held a workshop, summarized in this volume, to describe the dynamic technological, agricultural, and economic issues contributing to the food price increases of 2007 and 2008 and their impacts on health and nutrition in resource-poor regions. The compounding effects of the current global economic downturn on nutrition motivated additional discussions on these dual crises, their impacts on the nutritional status of vulnerable populations, and opportunities to mitigate their negative nutritional effects.

Book The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2019

Download or read book The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2019 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year’s report presents evidence that the absolute number of people who suffer from hunger continues to slowly increase. The report also highlights that food insecurity is more than just hunger. For the first time, the report provides evidence that many people in the world, even if not hungry, experience moderate food insecurity as they face uncertainties about their ability to obtain food and are forced to compromise on the quality and/or quantity of the food they consume. This phenomenon is observed globally, not only in low- and middle-income countries but also in high income countries. The report also shows that the world is not on track to meet global nutrition targets, including those on low birthweight and on reducing stunting among children under five years. Moreover, overweight and obesity continue to increase in all regions, particularly among school-age children and adults. The report stresses that no region is exempt from the epidemic of overweight and obesity, underscoring the necessity of multifaceted, multisectoral approaches to halt and reverse these worrying trends. In light of the fragile state of the world economy, the report presents new evidence confirming that hunger has been on the rise for many countries where the economy has slowed down or contracted. Unpacking the links between economic slowdowns and downturns and food insecurity and malnutrition, the report contends that the effects of the former on the latter can only be offset by addressing the root causes of hunger and malnutrition: poverty, inequality and marginalization.

Book Overcoming World Hunger

Download or read book Overcoming World Hunger written by United States. Presidential Commission on World Hunger and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A report of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger concludes that U.S. efforts to alleviate hunger are necessary, both to national security and to global peace. The Commission's major recommendation is that the U.S. government make the elimination of world hunger the primary focus of its relations with developing countries; this entails a reordering of national priorities. An analysis of the causes and future implications of world hunger suggests that its elimination will require a combination of approaches and substantial resources. Strong American development-assistance activities, (both short- and long-term) are needed to achieve an adequate world food supply. Actions to improve the international economic setting and combat hunger involve trade, debt, corporate involvement, and world food security policies. Domestic hunger and malnutrition are also addressed. Nutrition surveillance, continued support of domestic food programs, and public education are recommended methods for overcoming hunger at home. Book International Food Assistance

Download or read book International Food Assistance written by Thomas Melito and published by DIANE Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand edition of a hard to find publication. Discusses how local and regional procurement (LRP) can provide opportunities to enhance U.S. food aid. In today's environment of increasing emergencies and growing global food insecurity, the U.S. and other donors face intense pressures to feed the world's expanding undernourished population. In Sept. 2008, it was reported that high food prices had resulted in the number of undernourished people reaching a record 963 million. Most bilateral donors of food aid have switched from commodity-based in-kind food aid to a cash-based food assistance program. The large majority of U.S. food assistance is for U.S.-grown commodities purchased competitively in the U.S. and shipped to recipient countries on U.S.-flag carriers. Charts and tables.
