Book A Teacher s Guide to Science and Religion in the Classroom

Download or read book A Teacher s Guide to Science and Religion in the Classroom written by Berry Billingsley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Teacher’s Guide to Science and Religion in the Classroom provides practical guidance on how to help children access positive ways of thinking about the relationship between science and religion. Written for teachers of children from diverse-faith and non-faith backgrounds, it explores key concepts, identifies gaps and common misconceptions in children’s knowledge, and offers advice on how to help them form a deeper understanding of both science and religion. Drawing on the latest research as well as the designs of successful workshops for teachers and for children, there are activities in each chapter that have been shown to help children understand why science and religion do not necessarily conflict. The book highlights children’s interest in the so-called "Big Questions" that bridge science and religion and responds to the research finding that most children are missing ideas that are key to an explanation of why science and religion can be harmonious. The book explores key concepts and ideas including: Nature of science Power and limits of science Evolution, genes and human improvement Miracles, natural disasters and mystery Profiles of scientists, including Galileo and Newton A Teacher’s Guide to Science and Religion is an essential companion for preservice and practising teachers, providing session plans and pedagogic strategies, together with a cohesive framework, that will support teachers in fostering children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.

Download or read book A Pattern Language written by Christopher Alexander and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

Book Essential Guides for Early Career Teachers Teaching Primary Foundation Subjects

Download or read book Essential Guides for Early Career Teachers Teaching Primary Foundation Subjects written by James Coleman and published by Critical Publishing. This book was released on 2023-04-03 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Ofsted introduces a new framework with higher expectations regarding subject knowledge across the primary curriculum, there has never been a more important time for trainees to secure their subject knowledge and improve confidence. This book aims to help early career teachers in teaching primary foundation subjects. This is another text for the Essential Guides for Early Career teachers series and it provides ECT's and their mentors with the right tools for teaching primary foundation subjects, improving their subject knowledge and building understanding. It ensures that relevant theory and research are woven together with real classroom experience. It links to key readings, resources and online sources which will allow trainees to continue their own learning and encourage independent study through the use of reflective exercises and practical tasks to ensure the delivery of the best possible teaching. A text like this is needed more than ever as the Ofsted framework for ITT is explicit in highlighting subject knowledge as being a key component to successful teaching. This book, therefore, covers the kind of topics that ECT's might at first struggle with from art and design, to computing and IT to languages like French and German. This book breaks down each subject and points trainees in the direction of resources, support and best practice.

Book excerpt: A step-by-step guide for teachers to the benefits of visual note-taking and how to incorporate it in their classrooms. We've come a long way from teachers admonishing students to put away their drawings and take traditional long-form notes. Let's be honest: note-taking is boring and it isn't always the most effective way to retain information. This book is a guide for teachers about getting your students drawing and sketching to learn visually. Whether in elementary school or high school, neuroscience has shown that visual learning is a very effective way to retain information. The techniques in this book will help you work with your students in novel ways to retain information. Visual note-taking can be used with diverse learners; all ages; and those who have no drawing experience. Teachers are provided with a library of images and concepts to steal, tweak, and use in any way in their classrooms. The book is liberally illustrated with student examples from elementary and high school students alike.

Book From Story to Judgment The Four Question Method for Teaching and Learning Social Studies

Download or read book From Story to Judgment The Four Question Method for Teaching and Learning Social Studies written by Gary Shiffman and published by John Catt. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Four Question Method identifies the questions that drive the thinking that real people do when they take the human world seriously. The authors, Jonathan Bassett and Gary Shiffman, have figured out how to describe and teach what it takes to answer those questions well. This inquiry method gives educators a way to integrate content 'coverage' – through storytelling! – with practice in thinking skills that are central to history and its affiliated academic disciplines, together called social studies. The Four Question Method helps teachers to plan more effectively and students to learn more effectively. It provides guidance for writing research essays. And it transfers: the skills our students practice will work for them when they encounter and make their own history.

Book Mathematical Modelling for Teachers

Download or read book Mathematical Modelling for Teachers written by Jürgen Maaß and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are many areas of focus in mathematics education, there are many good reasons for offering applicable mathematics education in schools. Let us just mention two of the most important reasons. On the one hand, a focus on the practical side of mathematics presents a convincing and motivating answer to the typical student question: ‘Why study mathematics?’ On the other hand, education policy seems inclined to move in this direction by implementing international testing, curricula and catalogues of skills. The most important feature of this book is that the authors speak directly to you, the mathematics teachers. The authors attempt to draw you into a continuous dialogue about activities you are asked to engage in as learners. You are asked to do something, and through doing and reflecting you will gain first-hand experience of new approaches and materials. In this way, you can learn to teach applicable mathematics to your students using your own experience as learners of applicable mathematics, motivated and supported by the book. Here applicable mathematics education is the phrase we use to describe reality-based mathematics education. Reality-based mathematics relies heavily on problem solving and a positive disposition to engage with mathematics. Modelling reality and simulating selected aspects of reality are other pillars of reality-based mathematics education.
