Book Othello

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Shakespeare
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2016-02-25
  • ISBN : 1472571789
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Othello written by William Shakespeare and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of Othello has a new, illustrated introduction by leading American scholar Ayanna Thompson, which addresses such key issues as race, religion and gender, as well as looking at ways in which the play has been adapted in more recent times. Othello is one of Shakespeare's great tragedies-written in the same five-year period as Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth. The new introduction attends to the play's different meanings throughout history, while articulating the historical context in which Othello was created, paying particular attention to Shakespeare's source materials and the evidence about early modern constructions of racial and religious difference. It also explores the life of the play in different historical moments, demonstrating how meanings and performances develop, accrue, and metamorphose over time. The volume provides a rich and current resource, making this best-selling play edition ideal for today's students at advanced school and undergraduate level.

Book The Tempest The Oxford Shakespeare

Download or read book The Tempest The Oxford Shakespeare written by William Shakespeare and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performed variously as escapist fantasy, celebratory fiction, and political allegory, The Tempest is one of the plays in which Shakespeare's genius as a poetic dramatist found its fullest expression. Significantly, it was placed first when published in the First Folio of 1623, and is now generally seen as the playwright's most penetrating statement about his art. Stephen Orgel's wide-ranging introduction examines changing attitudes to The Tempest, and reassesses the evidence behind the various readings. He focuses on key characters and their roles and relationships, as well as on the dramatic, historical, and political context, finding the play to be both more open and more historically determined than traditional views have allowed. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book Twelfth Night or What You Will The Oxford Shakespeare

Download or read book Twelfth Night or What You Will The Oxford Shakespeare written by William Shakespeare and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelfth Night is one of the most popular of Shakespeare's plays in the modern theatre, and this edition places particular emphasis on its theatrical qualities throughout. Peopled with lovers misled either by disguises or their own natures, it combines lyrical melancholy with broad comedy. The introduction analyses its many views of love and the juxtaposition of joy and melancholy, while the detailed commentary pays particular attention to its linguistic subtleties. Music is particularly important in Twelfth Night, and this is the only modern edition to offer material for all the music required in a performance. James Walker has re-edited the existing music from the original sources, and where noe exists has composed settings compatible with the surviving originals. Book A Synoptic Hamlet a Critical Synoptic Edition of the Second Quarto and First Folio Texts of Hamlet

Download or read book A Synoptic Hamlet a Critical Synoptic Edition of the Second Quarto and First Folio Texts of Hamlet written by Jesús Tronch-Pérez and published by Universitat de València. This book was released on 2002 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Synoptic Hamlet is an alternative response to the editorial problems of this multiple-text play. Like most critical editions, it presents the early texts in a manner helpful to the general reader by modernizing spelling and punctuation, and emending non-sensical readings. However, it does not hide the text’s diversity by exclusively selecting readings from either the Second Quarto or the First Folio in order to reconstruct a single-reading version corresponding to the authentic Hamlet. Rather, it makes their significant variants immediately available in the line itself (offering alternative editorial interpretations of identical or similar readings at certain points). Thus the reader can have a direct appreciation of the divergence and similarity between these early texts from which the Hamlet of today is known.

Book The Man Behind the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

Download or read book The Man Behind the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam written by William H. Martin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Its lines and verses have become part of the western literary canon and his translation of this most famous of poems has been continuously in print in for almost a century and a half. But just who was Edward FitzGerald? Was he the eccentric recluse that most scholars would have us believe? Is there more to the man than just his famous translation? In The Man Behind the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam William Martin and Sandra Martin go beyond the standard view. Drawing on their unique analysis of the more than 2,000 surviving letters of FitzGerald, together with evidence from his scrapbooks, commonplace books and materials from his personal library, they reveal a more convivial yet complex personality than we have been led to suppose."
