Book The Life of William Carleton Vol 1

Download or read book The Life of William Carleton Vol 1 written by William Carleton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Carleton, Vol. 1: Being His Autobiography and Letters Nearly thirty years have run their course since the death of Carleton, yet no attempt has hitherto been made to write his life. The lack of a biography of so remarkable a writer leaves an obvious gap in Irish literary history. Lever, Lover, Griffin, Banim, Miss Edgeworth, and Lady Morgan have each had their biographer or biographers. Carleton has either been overlooked, or the difficulty of presenting him to the world as he lived, acted, and was, has proved too great for the memoir writers of the intervening period. The difficulties involved in such a task were not such as could have been offered to any one dealing with the other novelists named. These difficulties were, however, growing fewer and less formidable with every year that passed, and the discovery of the unpublished account of Carleton's early life, now printed for the first time, helps to smooth the way of the biographer. The initial obstacle was the deficiency of material, and a hardly less serious one was the delicacy of dealing with the matter which was ultimately collected. Carleton had earned the reputation of being in every sense a "queer fish"; he had been accused of obvious and consistent insincerity; and charges of mercenary motives and of reckless partisanship were so often brought against him, with other more or less absurd accusations, that it is not surprising that the biographer has hitherto left him alone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of William Carleton, Vol. 1: Willy Reilly; Fardorougha the Miser; The Black Baronet, or the Chronicles of Ballytrain; The Evil Eye, or the Black Spectre As the work was first written, I described a good many of the Catholic priests of the day as disguised in female apparel; but on discovering that there exists an ecclesiastical regulation or canon forbidding any priest, under whatever persecution or pressure, to assume such apparel for the purpose of dis guising his person or saving his life, I, of course, changed that portion of the matter, although a layman might well be pardoned for his ignorance of an ecclesiastical statute, which, except in very rare cases, can be known only to ecclesiastics themselves. I retain one instance, however, of this desmip tion, which I ascribe to Hennessy, the de graded fliar, who is a historical character, and who wrought a vast weight of evil, as an informer, against the Catholic priesthood of Ireland, both regular and secular. With respect to the family name of the heroine and her father, I have adopted both the popular pronunciation and orthography, instead of the real. I give it simply as I found it in the ballad, and as I always heard it pronounced by the people; in the first place, from reluctance, by writing it accu rately, to give offence to that portion of this highly respectable family which still exists and, in the next, from a disinclination to dis turb the original impressions made on the popular mind by the ballad and the traditions associated with it. So far as the traditions go, there was nothing connected with the heroine of which her descendants need feel ashamed. If it had been otherwise, her memory never would have been enshrined in the affections of the hish people for such an unusual pe1iod of time. Download or read book The Works of William Carleton Vol 3 written by William Carleton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of William Carleton, Vol. 3: Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry In every point of view this was wrong, but principally in a political one. At that time England and Englishmen knew very little of Ireland, and, consequently, the principal opportunities afforded them of appreciating our character were found on the stage. Of course, it was very natural that the erroneous estimate of us which they formed there should influence them everywhere else. We cannot sympathize with, and laugh at, the same object at the same time; and if the Irishman found himself undeservedly the object of coarse and unjust ridicule, it ivas not very unnatural that he should requite it with a prejudice against the principles and feelings of Englishmen, quite as strong as that which was entertained against himself. Had this ridicule been confined to the stage, or directed at us in the presence of those who had other and better opportunities of knowing us, it would have been compara tively harmless. But this was not the case. It passed from the stage into the recesses of private life, wrought itself into the feelings until it became a prejudice, and the Irish man was consequently looked upon, and treated, as being made up of absurdity and cunning, - a compound of knave and fool, fit only to be punished for his knavery, or laughed at for his folly. So far, therefore. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
