This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Download or read book The Invention of News written by Andrew Pettegree and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVLong before the invention of printing, let alone the availability of a daily newspaper, people desired to be informed. In the pre-industrial era news was gathered and shared through conversation and gossip, civic ceremony, celebration, sermons, and proclamations. The age of print brought pamphlets, edicts, ballads, journals, and the first news-sheets, expanding the news community from local to worldwide. This groundbreaking book tracks the history of news in ten countries over the course of four centuries. It evaluates the unexpected variety of ways in which information was transmitted in the premodern world as well as the impact of expanding news media on contemporary events and the lives of an ever-more-informed public. Andrew Pettegree investigates who controlled the news and who reported it; the use of news as a tool of political protest and religious reform; issues of privacy and titillation; the persistent need for news to be current and journalists trustworthy; and people’s changed sense of themselves as they experienced newly opened windows on the world. By the close of the eighteenth century, Pettegree concludes, transmission of news had become so efficient and widespread that European citizens—now aware of wars, revolutions, crime, disasters, scandals, and other events—were poised to emerge as actors in the great events unfolding around them./div

Book Revivalistics

Download or read book Revivalistics written by Ghilad Zuckermann and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This seminal book introduces revivalistics, a new trans-disciplinary field of enquiry surrounding language reclamation, revitalization and reinvigoration. The book is divided into two main parts that represent Zuckermann's fascinating and multifaceted journey into language revival, from the 'Promised Land' (Israel) to the 'Lucky Country' (Australia) and beyond. Part 1: language revival and cross-fertilization. The aim of this part is to suggest that due to the ubiquitous multiple causation, the reclamation of a no-longer spoken language is unlikely without cross-fertilization from the revivalists' mother tongue(s). Thus, one should expect revival efforts to result in a language with a hybridic genetic and typological character. The book highlights salient morphological, phonological, phonetic, syntactic, semantic and lexical features, illustrating the difficulty in determining a single source for the grammar of 'Israeli', the language resulting from the Hebrew revival. The European impact in these features is apparent inter alia in structure, semantics or productivity. Multiple causation is manifested in the Congruence Principle, according to which the more contributing languages a feature exists in, the more likely it is to persist in the emerging language. Consequently, the reality of linguistic genesis is far more complex than a simple family tree system allows. 'Revived' languages are unlikely to have a single parent. Part 2: language revival and wellbeing. The book then applies practical lessons (rather than clichés) from the critical analysis of the Hebrew reclamation to other revival movements globally, and goes on to describe the why and how of language revival. The how includes practical, nitty-gritty methods for reclaiming 'sleeping beauties' such as the Barngarla Aboriginal language of Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, e.g. using what Zuckermann calls talknology (talk technology). The why includes ethical, aesthetic, and utilitarian reasons such as improving wellbeing and mental health"--

Book Church and State in England in the Xviiith Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book Church and State in England in the Xviiith Century Classic Reprint written by Norman Sykes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church and State in England in the Xviiith Century From Professor G. M. Trevelyan I have received a host of kindnesses too numerous to mention and bestowed with prodigal generosity from the time of my acceptance of the office of Birkbeck Lecturer until now. I Since this preface was written, Dr H. J. White has died in July 1934. I am especially grateful for his criticism of the lectures upon delivery, for his reading of part of my manuscript, and for his help in negotiation with the Syndics of the Cambridge University Press. Sir Charles Firth has continued to me the privilege of access to his counsel and library, and has helped me much by his advice and comments. If Canon E. W. Watson should recognise in the ensuing pages frequent echoes of his words spoken both in lectures and private discussion, I hope he will receive them as tokens of gratitude and perhaps also as evidence that his pains bestowed upon a former student have not been wholly in vain. To Professor L. B. Namier I am indebted for occasions of discussion of the labyrinthine policies and exhaustive correspondence of the duke of Newcastle, and for the avidity of appetite which has enabled him to sustain even the ecclesiastical divagations of his grace's career. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Jago reinforces the view of recent scholars that, when judged by what it tried to do instead of by what Victorian reformers thought it ought to have tried to do, the Georgian church was successful in maintaining the spiritual life of the parishes - though perhaps not so well-equipped to survive intact the unprecedented changes in population and industry that reshaped Yorkshire and English society in the later eighteenth century.

Download or read book Accommodating High Churchmen written by Jeffrey Scott Chamberlain and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happened to High Churchmen in eighteenth-century England? Contending that high-church clergymen did not simply acquiesce to government after the Hanoverian accession, as has often been claimed, Jeffrey Chamberlain explores the complex accommodation that was forged between the secular powers and the clergy. Focusing on the county of Sussex, he finds that there was accommodation by both clergy and the Whig politicians: the former had to make peace with a new administration, but that administration's efforts to prove themselves "good churchmen" enabled the religious to come to terms with them without jettisoning their principles.
