This book was released on 2016-07-13 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of the Reverend William Law, M. A., Sometime Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Vol. 2 of 9: I. Remarks Upon a Book, Entitled, 'the Fable of the Bees, ' &C.; II. The Case of Reason, or Natural Religion, Fairly and Fully Stated, &C.; III. The Absolute Unlawfulness of Stage-Entertainments Fully Demonstrated I shall spend no Time in Preface, or general Re ections, but proceed directly to the Examination of such Passages as expose moral Virtue, as a Fraud and imposition, and render all Pretences to it, as odious and contemptible. Though I direct myself to you, I hope it will be no Offence, if I sometimes speak, as if I was speaking to a Christian, or show some ways of thinking, that may be owing to that kind of worship which is professed amongst us. Ways of thinking derived from revealed Religion are much more suitable to our low Capacities, than any arrogant Pretences to be wise, by our own Light. Moral Virtue, however disregarded in Practice, has hitherto had a speculative Esteem amongst Men; her Praises have been celebrated by Authors of all kinds, as the confessed Beauty, Ornament, and Perfection of Human Nature. On the contrary, Immorality has been looked upon as the greatest Reproach and Torment of Mankind no Satire has been thought severe enough upon its natural Baseness and Deformity, nor any Wit able to express the Evils it occasions in private Life, and public Societies. Download or read book A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life written by William Law and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This examination of the Christian life constitutes one of the most remarkable books of devotion ever written. William Law's book dates from 1728, a decade before England's great evangelical revival, during which it exercised a significant influence on the movement's leaders. A Serious Call has been praised by readers as varied as Samuel Johnson, Edward Gibbon, and John Wesley. "If Mr. Law finds a spark of piety in a reader's mind, he will soon kindle it into a flame," declared Gibbon, and Wesley pronounced Law's work as one of the books that formed his "explicit resolve to be all devoted to God." Three hundred years after its initial publication, this volume continues to win accolades from modern readers who appreciate its guidelines on prayer, personal holiness, and charity. Simple but profound, it features brief chapters that make it particularly suitable for daily devotions.

Download or read book The Politics written by Aristotle and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 1981-09-17 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-three centuries after its compilation, 'The Politics' still has much to contribute to this central question of political science. Aristotle's thorough and carefully argued analysis is based on a study of over 150 city constitutions, covering a huge range of political issues in order to establish which types of constitution are best - both ideally and in particular circumstances - and how they may be maintained. Aristotle's opinions form an essential background to the thinking of philosophers such as Thomas Aquinas, Machiavelli and Jean Bodin and both his premises and arguments raise questions that are as relevant to modern society as they were to the ancient world.
