Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Stanley Houghton, Vol. 1 of 3 William Stanley Houghton was born, an only son with one sister, at Ashton-upon-Mersey, in Cheshire, on 22nd February 1881. He sprang from an old Lancashire family, originally settled at Preston, of which town he was an hereditary freeman. Down to the beginning of the eighteenth century the name in the rolls of the Preston Guild is spelt 'Hoghton': between the Guilds of 1702 and 1722 the 'u' crept in, and the name henceforth appears as Houghton. It is pronounced Hawton. As a boy he was delicate, and, though no specific ailment manifested itself apart from an attack of chorea, suffered from recurring periods of a kind of influenza accompanied by a high temperature and followed by prostration. His ill-health was, together with his parents' changes of residence, responsible for his migrations from school to school. He was educated successively at the Bowdon College, the Stockport Grammar School, the Wilmslow Grammar School, and the Manchester Grammar School. For some time he resided at Wilmslow, a Cheshire suburb of Manchester, with which another famous dramatist, Mr. Hubert Henry Davies, had early associations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Stanley Houghton, Vol. 3 of 3 The scene is laid in the South Cheshire country town of Danesbridge. It is a late autumn evening, chilly and wet. The stage represents an old-fashioned room with wooden beams across the ceiling and walls half panelled. In the middle of the back wall is a large bay window, the panes covered with dark green curtains. Nearest the spectator, on his left, is a door leading to the other part of the house, and farther away a large and roomy fireplace. In the back, to the right of the window, is a door opening into a small hall. From this hall the outer door, which is visible, opens on to the street. In the hall is a hat-stand with a coat, a couple of hats, and an umbrella. An old-fashioned bureau, on which is a large worn Bible, books, papers, and a file of bills, stands in the bay window. On the wall to the right of the spectator a large dresser-sideboard, bearing some old blue and white pottery. By the fire an armchair, another chair, and a small table covered with papers, books, pen, and ink. In the centre of the stage a large oval dining-table covered with a green, gold, and brown cloth. The half nearest the door is spread with a white tray-cloth, and supper for one is laid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stanley, Vol. 1 of 2: Or the Recollections of a Man of the World My father was exceedingly reserved in his temper, and generally-left my conduct to my own control, and my in clinations and feelings to their natural course. Though not particularly literary in his taste. He had a fine library which contained goo'd editions of all the best classics of ancient and modern literature. This room was my favourite resort from my earliest years. The loneliness of my situation compelled me to seek some employment to divert my time, and I found abundance there. I read whatever fell in my way without much reference to sys tem or utility. I found literature the best refuge from the fatigue of thought and the yet greater fatigue of idleness. My constant devotion generated a love for reading which, after a long lapse of years, still remains in all its force. My books became my constant companions, for I found in the silent instructors that were ranged around my walls, calmer disputants and wiser counsellors than the living 'circle of acquaintance could exhibit. Making study both a business and an amusement, I drew from the same sources the topic of my toil and the light of my leisure - perceiving, with d'aguesseau, that the best re laxation was change. My most habitual delight, how ever, was in the productions of the muse; to them I turned as to a shady valley, for refreshment after every Weariness and repose from every anxiety. The effusions of the highest sort of poetry, which are Wisdom speaking in the voice of Pleasure, are the best diversion in hours of gayety, and the best solace in times of trouble.
