Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Complete Works, Vol. 16 III. Critical comments ON the play [from Mzz/z'tt's C/zaraftc'rs (f S/ml'espear's Plays. Shakespear has in this play shown himself well versed in history and state affairs. Como/aims is a storehouse of polit ical commonplaces. The arguments for and against aristocracy or democracy, on the privileges Of the few and the claims of the many, on liberty and Slavery, power and the abuse of it, peace and war, are here very ably handled, with the Spirit Of a poet and the acuteness of a philosopher. Shakespear himself seems to have had a leaning to the ar bitrary side of the question, perhaps from some feeling of contempt for his own origin, and to have spared no occasion of bating the rabble. What he says of them is very true; what he says of their Oetters is also very true, though he dwells less upon it. The cause of the people is indeed but little calculated as a Subject for poetry: it admits of rhetoric, which goes into argument and explanation, but it presents no immediate or distinct images to the mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Vol. 16 of 20: With a Life of the Poet, Explanatory Foot-Notes, Critical Notes, and a Glossarial Index In the course of the same year Antony was married to Octavia; by which marriage the difficulties of the two Triumvirs were expected to be permanently healed though, as the issue proved, the band that seemed to tie their friendship together was the very strangler of their amity. This was followed, the next year, by the treaty with Sextus Pompey at Misenum. For some four years, Antony, in form at least, kept his faith with Octavia, who bore him two children. But, with all her beauty and wisdom and illustrious virtues, she could make no abiding impression upon him: his thoughts kept flying back to Egypt. In the year b.c. 36 he set forth on another expedition against the Parthians, and sent an invitation to Cleopatra to join him; and, on her doing so, he fell more hopelessly than ever under her enchant ments, lavishing realms and cities upon her as if the whole world were his, and he valued it only that he might give it to her. It is mentioned among the plays entered by Blount in 1623 on the Stationers' Registers as not formerly entered to other men. A play on the same subject was registered by the same publisher on May 20, 1608; it was probably the present drama, but for some reason or other no Quarto was issued. The text of the play, as printed in the First Folio, was probably derived from a carefully written manuscript copy, and is on the Whole most satisfactory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of William Shakespeare, Vol. 15 of 16 On the 22d of August, 1485, there was a battle fought for the crown of England, a short battle ending in a decisive victory. The battle-field was Bosworth. Was there in that victorious army of the Earl of Richmond, - which Richard denounced as a "company of traitors, thieves, outlaws, and runagates," - an Englishman bearing the name of Chacksper, or Shakespeyre, or Schakespere, or Schakespeire, or Schakspere, or Shakespere, or Shakspere, - a martial name, however spelt? "Breakspear, Shakespear, and the like, have been surnames imposed upon the first bearers of them for valor and feats of arms." Of the warlike achievements of this Shakespeare there is no record: his name or his deeds would have no interest for us unless there had been born, eighty years after this battle-day, a direct descendant from him - "Whose muse, full of high thought's invention, Doth like himself heroically sound;" a Shakespeare, of whom it is also said - "He seems to shake a lance As brandish'd at the eyes of ignorance."
