  • Author : David Vincent
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons

Download or read book A History of Solitude written by David Vincent and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solitude has always had an ambivalent status: the capacity to enjoy being alone can make sociability bearable, but those predisposed to solitude are often viewed with suspicion or pity. Drawing on a wide array of literary and historical sources, David Vincent explores how people have conducted themselves in the absence of company over the last three centuries. He argues that the ambivalent nature of solitude became a prominent concern in the modern era. For intellectuals in the romantic age, solitude gave respite to citizens living in ever more complex modern societies. But while the search for solitude was seen as a symptom of modern life, it was also viewed as a dangerous pathology: a perceived renunciation of the world, which could lead to psychological disorder and anti-social behaviour. Vincent explores the successive attempts of religious authorities and political institutions to manage solitude, taking readers from the monastery to the prisoner’s cell, and explains how western society’s increasing secularism, urbanization and prosperity led to the development of new solitary pastimes at the same time as it made traditional forms of solitary communion, with God and with a pristine nature, impossible. At the dawn of the digital age, solitude has taken on new meanings, as physical isolation and intense sociability have become possible as never before. With the advent of a so-called loneliness epidemic, a proper historical understanding of the natural human desire to disengage from the world is more important than ever. The first full-length account of its subject, A History of Solitude will appeal to a wide general readership.

Download or read book Wild Track written by Seán Street and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild Track is an exploration of birdsong and the ways in which that sound was conveyed, described and responded to through text, prior to the advent of recording and broadcast technologies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Street links sound aesthetics, radio, natural history, and literature to explore how the brain and imagination translate sonic codes as well as the nature of the silent sound we "hear" when we read a text. This creates an awareness of sound through the tuned attention of the senses, learning from sound texts of the natural world that sought – and seek – to convey the intensity of the sonic moment and fleeting experience. To absorb these lessons is to enable a more highly interactive relationship with sound and listening, and to interpret the subtleties of audio as a means of expression and translation of the living world.

Book Rural Tales Ballads and Songs

Download or read book Rural Tales Ballads and Songs written by Robert Bloomfield and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-23 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Bloomfield's 'Rural Tales, Ballads, and Songs' is a collection of poems that vividly depict the beauty and hardships of rural life in late 18th-century England. Written in a straightforward and accessible style, Bloomfield's work stands out for its detailed descriptions of nature and the daily struggles of the common people. The use of ballads and songs adds a lyrical quality to the poems, enhancing their emotional impact. In the literary context of the Romantic era, Bloomfield's writings provide a valuable insight into the pastoral tradition and the significance of rural themes in English literature. His work has influenced later poets such as John Clare and William Wordsworth, who praised his authentic portrayal of country life. Robert Bloomfield, himself a self-taught poet and laborer, drew inspiration from his own experiences growing up in rural Suffolk. His intimate knowledge of the countryside and its inhabitants shines through in 'Rural Tales, Ballads, and Songs', giving readers a genuine glimpse into the world he knew so well. Bloomfield's passion for capturing the essence of rural life and the beauty of the natural world is evident in every poem he penned. I highly recommend 'Rural Tales, Ballads, and Songs' to readers who appreciate poetry that celebrates the simplicity and profundity of country life. Bloomfield's heartfelt verses offer a poignant reflection on the human connection to nature and the enduring spirit of rural communities.

Book James Thomson s The Seasons Print Culture and Visual Interpretation 1730 1842

Download or read book James Thomson s The Seasons Print Culture and Visual Interpretation 1730 1842 written by Sandro Jung and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the methods of textual and reception studies, book history, print culture research, and visual culture, this interdisciplinary study of James Thomson’s The Seasons (1730) understands the text as marketable commodity and symbolic capital which throughout its extended affective presence in the marketplace for printed literary editions shaped reading habits. At the same time, through the addition of paratexts such as memoirs of Thomson, notes, and illustrations, it was recast by changing readerships, consumer fashions, and ideologies of culture. The book investigates the poem’s cultural afterlife by charting the prominent place it occupied in the visual cultures of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Britain. While the emphasis of the chapters is on printed visual culture in the form of book illustrations, the book also features discussions of paintings and other visual media such as furniture prints. Reading illustrations of iconographic moments from The Seasons as paratextual, interpretive commentaries that reflect multifarious reading practices as well as mentalities, the chapters contextualise the editions in light of their production and interpretive inscription. They introduce these editions’ publishers and designers who conceived visual translations of the text, as well as the engravers who rendered these designs in the form of the engraving plate from which the illustration could then be printed. Where relevant, the chapters introduce non-British illustrated editions to demonstrate in which ways foreign booksellers were conscious of British editions of The Seasons and negotiated their illustrative models in the sets of engraved plates they commissioned for their volumes.
