It is a journey that happens quietly and mostly internally.One of the challenges in writing this novel is thinking through what Margaret would have done to whittle away at that repression, whether self-imposed or socially-dictated, while at the same time, keeping the trajectory of her growth consistent with her character, as written by Gaskell.The novel has been written so it can be read as a standalone; i.e., without having read Gaskell's book or seen the BBC miniseries. Having said that, it will probably resonate more forcefully for those familiar with the series and/or the book.
