Book excerpt: "[...]society with the most perfect goût; and find my love for her takes off my fear and awe, though my respect for her character continually increases.' Mrs. Montagu's great friendship was found eminently conducive to the welfare of Mrs. Chapone. It added to her sources of intellectual gratification, extended the old circle of her acquaintance, and emboldened and encouraged her to submit her writings to the world. We are now to consider Mrs. Chapone's literary performances; which, following the order of publication, consist of Letters on the Improvement of the Mind; 1773. Miscellanies, in Prose and Verse; 1775. Posthumous Works; two volumes, 1804. These latter volumes contain Mrs. Chapone's Correspondence with Mr. Richardson, on Filial Obedience; a[...]".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Mrs. Chapone, Vol. 1 of 4: Containing I. Letters on the Improvement of the Mind; II. Miscellanies; III. Correspondence With Mr. Richardson; IV. Letters to Miss. Carter; V. Fugitive Pieces Such language and such arguments as' these letters contain, can hardly fail to ex cite admiration, if not to afford considerable gratification in the perusal, when the rea der recollects that they come from the pen of a lady, who at the age of twenty-two, with very few of the slender advantages of the education even of that moment, had discernment to detect, and courage to com bat the errors of a work received with so general, nay, even enthusiastic approbation as the History of Clarissa Harlowe. The matrimonial creed, with the other fugitive pieces, produced at different times, as they mark the versatility of her genius, and the playfulness of her fancy, were judg ed not unfit to form a part of this little compilation. Book Literary Coteries and the Making of Modern Print Culture

Download or read book Literary Coteries and the Making of Modern Print Culture written by Betty A. Schellenberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Coteries and the Making of Modern Print Culture offers the first study of manuscript-producing coteries as an integral element of eighteenth-century Britain's literary culture. As a corrective to literary histories assuming that the dominance of print meant the demise of a vital scribal culture, the book profiles four interrelated and influential coteries, focusing on each group's deployment of traditional scribal practices, on key individuals who served as bridges between networks, and on the aesthetic and cultural work performed by the group. The book also explores points of intersection between coteries and the print trade, whether in the form of individuals who straddled the two cultures; publishing events in which the two media regimes collaborated or came into conflict; literary conventions adapted from manuscript practice to serve the ends of print; or simply poetry hand-copied from magazines. Together, these instances demonstrate how scribal modes shaped modern literary production. This title is also available as Open Access.

Book Living by the Pen

Download or read book Living by the Pen written by Cheryl Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living by the Pen traces the pattern of the development of women's fiction from 1696 to 1796 and offers an interpretation of its distinctive features. It focuses upon the writers rather than their works, and identifies professional novelists. Through examination of the extra-literary context, and particularly the publishing market, the book asks why and how women earned a living by the pen. Cheryl Turner has researched and lectured widely in the field of eighteenth-century women's writing.
