Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of John Dryden, Vol. 2 of 18: Illustrated With Notes, Historical, Critical, and Explanatory, and a Life of the Author The Editor may be pardoned in bestowing remarks upon Dry 'den's plays, only in proportion to their intrinsic merit, and to the attention which each has excited, either at its first appearance, or when the public attention has been since directed towards them. In either point of view, little need be said on the Wild Gallant. It was Dryden's first theatrical production, and its reception by no means augured his future pre-eminence in literature; nor was it more than tolerated, when afterwards revived under the sanction of his increasing fame. It was brought upon the stage in Pebru ary 1662-3, according to the conjecture of Mr Malone, who oh serves, that the following lines in the prologue. Book The Works of John Dryden Volume XX

Download or read book The Works of John Dryden Volume XX written by John Dryden and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1990-05-30 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time since 1695, a complete text of De Arte Graphica as Dryden himself wrote it is available to readers. In all, Volume XX presents six pieces written during Dryden's final decade, each of them either requested by a friend or commissioned by a publisher. Two are translations, three introduce translations made by others, and the sixth introduces an original work by one of Dryden's friends. The most recent version of De Arte Graphica, Saintsbury's late nineteenth-century reissue of Scott's edition, based the text of the translated matter on an edition that was heavily revised by someone other than Dryden. In fact, only one of the pieces offered here, the brief Character of Saint-Evremond, has appeared complete in a twentieth-century edition. The commentary in this volume supplies biographical and bibliographical contexts for these pieces and draws attention to the views on history and historians, poetry and painting, Virgil and translation, which Dryden expresses in them. Many other volumes of prose, poetry, and plays are available in the California Edition of The Works of John Dryden.

Download or read book The Works of John Dryden Vol 17 of 18 written by Walter Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of John Dryden, Vol. 17 of 18: Now First Collected in Eighteen Volumes; Illustrated With Notes, Historical, Critical, and Explanatory, and a Life of the Author Dryden was induced to honour this work, so creditable to those who had undertaken it, with a Dedication, and Life of Plutarch. The Dedication is addressed to the great Duke of Ormond, whom Dryden had celebrated, 'in Absalom and Achitophel, under the name of Barzillai. The reader will find some account of that nobleman, in the note upon that passage, Vol. IX. P. 294. It is doing no injustice to the other great qua lities of Ormond, to say, that his generous and unwearied pro tection of Dryden will not be the soonest forgotten. The poet's feelings towards this noble family were expressed in the preface to the Fables, his last great work. The publication and translation of Plutarch's Lives was not completed until 1686, when the last volume appeared. The following remarkable advertisement was prefixed to the work; which, from internal evidence, Mr Malone ascribes to our author, although bearing the name, and written in the cha racter of Jacob Tonson, the publisher of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of John Dryden, Vol. 2 of 2: In Verse and Prose, With a Life After this particular account of the beauties in the Georgics, i should, in the next place, en deavour to point out its imperfections, if it has any. But, though I think there are some few parts in it that are not so beautiful as the rest, I shall not presume to name them, as rather sus pooting my own judgment, than I can believe a fault to be in that poem, which lay so long un der Virgil's correction, and had his last ptit to it. The First Georgie was probably bur lesqued in the author's lifetime; for we still find in the scholiasts a verse that ridicules part of a line translated from Hesiod - Nadia are, we nudes: And we may easily guess at the judgment of this extraordinary critic, whoever he was, from his censuring this particular pre cept. We may be sure Virgil would not have translated it from Hesiod, had he not discovered some beauty in it; and indeed the beauty of it is, what I have before observed to be frequently met with in Virgil, the delivering the precept so indirectly, and singling out the particular cir cumstance of sowing and ploughing naked, to suggest to us, that these employments are proper only in the hot season of the year.
