Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Henry Clay, Comprising His Life, Correspondence and Speeches The fallacious course of reasoning urged against domestic manufactures, namely, the distress and servitude produced by those of England, Would equally indicate the propriety of abandoning agriculture itself. Were you to cast your eyes upon the miserable peasantry of Poland, and revert to the days of feudal vassalage, you might thence draw numerous argu ments, of the kind now under consideration, against the pursuits of the husbandman! What would become of commerce, the favorite theme of some gentlemen, if assailed with this sort of weapon? The fraud, perjury, cupidity, and corruption, with which it is unhappily too Often attended, would at once produce its overthrow. In short, sir, take the black side of the picture, and every human occupation will be found pregnant with fatal objections. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Henry Clay, Vol. 8 of 10: Comprising His Life, Correspondence and Speeches IT will be seen that the great speech delivered by Mr. Clay, February 5th and 6th, 1850, on his Resolutions of Compromise, is given in the Appendix of the third volume of this work, en titled the Last Seven Years of Mr. Clay's Life. There are also some brief extracts, in the Appendix to that volume, of Mr. Clay's speeches on the Compromises of 1850. But the last part of this volume, beginning on page 391, contains all the most important speeches of Mr. Clay in the Thirty-first Con gress, with the exception of that of the 5th and 6th of Feb ruary, 1850. As the editor found occasion to interweave numerous notes between speeches and parts of speeches, de livered in the Thirty-first Congress, the introductions to these speeches are more brief, their place being supplied by the notes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Henry Clay, Vol. 4 of 10: Comprising His Life, Correspondence and Speeches; Part 1. Private Correspondence, 1801-1832 Mb. Clay was not in the habit of keeping copies of his own letters. It may easily be imagined, therefore, that the time and trouble required to collect original and authenticated copies, so as to compose an epistolary history of his life, have not been inconsiderable. From some three thousand documents, more or less, collected at Ashland and elsewhere, the editor has sifted and shaken out the correspondence contained in this volume. For the first fifteen years of the present cen tury, down to the treaty of Ghent, embraced in the first chapter, very few of Mr. Clay's letters could be obtained. From that period they begin to appear more abundantly. It was thought proper to introduce letters of the correspondents of Mr. Clay to some extent, especially those of distinguished persons, and on occa sions of especial interest. It was not possible generally to obtain the immediate counterparts of the correspondence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Henry Clay, Vol. 5 of 10: Comprising His Life, Correspondence and Speeches MY dear sir, - I received your two last favors, and Should have written to you before and oftener, but that I really have had nothing interesting to communicate. As to politics, we have no past, no future. After forty-four years of existence um der the present Constitution, what single principle is fixed The Bank? No. Internal Improvements? No. The Tariff? No. Who is to interpret the Constitution? We are as much a oat at sea as the day when the Constitution went into Opera tion. There is nothing certain but that the will of Andrew Jackson is to govern; and that will uctuates with the change of every pen which gives expression to it. As to the Tariff, now pending before the House, whether it will pass or no in that body depends upon his command. I have been thinking of some settlement of that question, but I have not entirely matured any plan; and if I had, I am not satisfied that it would be expedient to offer it. Any plan that I might offer would be instantly opposed, because I offered it. Sometimes I have thought that, considering how I have been and still am treated by both parties (the Tariff and the Anti I would leave them to fight it out as well as they can. The lingering hopes for my country prevail over these feelings of a just resentment, and my judgment tells me, that disregard ing them, I ought to the last to endeavor to do what I can to preserve its institutions and re-establish confidence and concord. I Shall act in conformity with this judgment, but I am far from being sanguine that I have the power to effect any thing. You will have seen the late Message. It is able and elaborate, freer from passion than the proclamation, but not more compati ble with the doctrines which prevail at Richmond. Download or read book The Life Correspondence and Speeches of Henry Clay Vol 3 Of 6 written by Calvin Colton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life, Correspondence, and Speeches of Henry Clay, Vol. 3 of 6: Life and Times Mr. Stevenson's contribution stands by itself, and speaks for itself. It was offered under the assurance that it would be published elsewhere, if not here and it was accepted to occupy this place as his own compilation, and on his own sole responsibility. Knowing that he sustained very inti mate and confidential relations with Mr. Clay, and that Mr. Clay re quested him to have an eye on this portion of history, the author could do no less than welcome his contribution. It will be seen to be an entirely new chapter. This volume, as will be seen, naturally occupies the third place in the author's works on Mr. Clay, and the Private Correspondence the fourth, although the latter was previously published - embracing, as a whole, The Life and Correspondence of Henry Clay. The author proposes to edit Mr. Clay's speeches, in two volumes, with an historical introduction at the head of each speech, which will make a work of six volumes, uniform, and which, when complete, will comprise the Life, Correspondence, and Speeches of Henry Clay. This volume is entitled the last Smn Yams of Mr. Clay's life, as being appropriate to that distinct and important period of his career. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Henry Clay, Vol. 7 of 10: Comprising His Life, Correspondence, and Speeches; And a History of Tariff Legislation, 1812-1896 Had I voted for General Jackson, in opposition to the well-known opin ions which I entertained Of him, one tenth part of the ingenuity and zeal which have been employed to excite prejudices against me, would have held me up to universal contempt; and what would have been worse, I should have felt that I really deserved it. Before the election, an attempt was made by an abusive letter, published in the Columbian Observer, at Philadelphia, a paper which, as has since transpired, was sustained by Mr. Senator Eaton, the colleague, the friend, and the biographer of General Jackson, to assail my motives, and to deter me in the exercise of my duty. This letter being avowed by Mr. George Kremer, I instantly demanded from the House of Representatives an invest igation. A committee was accordingly, on the 5th day of February, 1825, appointed in the rare mode of balloting by the House, instead of by se lection of the Speaker. It was composed of some of the leading members of that body, not one of whom was my political friend in the preceding presidential canvass. Although Mr. Kremer, in addressing the House, had declared his willingness to bring forward his proofs, and his readiness to abide the issue of the inquiry, his fears, or other counsels than his own, prevailed upon him to take refuge in a miserable subterfuge. Of all possi ble periods, that was the most fitting to substantiate the charge, if it were true. Every circumstance was then fresh; the witnesses all living and present; the election not yet complete; and therefore the imputed corrupt bargain not fulfilled. All these powerful considerations had no weight with the conspirators and their accessories, and they meanly shrunk from even an attempt to prove their charge, for the best of all possible reasons because, being false and fabricated, they could adduce no proof which was not false and fabricated. During two years and a half, which have now intervened, a portion of the press devoted to the cause of General Jackson has been teeming with the Vilest calumnies against me, and the charge, under every chameleon form, has been a thousand times repeated. Up to this time I have in vain invited investigation, and demanded evidence. None, not a particle, has been adduced.
