This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic poems and spine-tingling stories of a Gothic American master collected in one volume Of all the American masters, Edgar Allan Poe staked out perhaps the most unique and vivid reputation, as a master of the macabre. Even today, in the age of horror movies and high-tech haunted houses, Poe is the first choice of entertainment for many who want a spine-chilling thrill. Born in Boston in 1809, and dead at the age of 40, Poe wrote across several fields during his life, noted for his poetry and short stories as well as his criticism. The best of each of these is collected here, including the classic poem “The Raven,” and timeless stories like “The Tell-Tale Heart.” In his introduction to this volume, G. R. Thompson argues that Poe was a great satirist and comedic craftsman, as well as a formidable Gothic writer. “All of Poe’s fiction,” Thompson writes, “and the poems as well, can be seen as one coherent piece—as the work of one of the greatest ironists of world literature.” The Great Short Works of Edgar Allen Poe includes these classics: The Raven Annabel Lee The Murders in the Rue Morgue The Masque of the Red Death The Pit and the Pendulum The Tell-Tale Heart The Purloined Letter The Imp of the Perverse

Book excerpt: Since their first publication in the 1830s and 1840s, Edgar Allan Poe's extraordinary Gothic tales have established themselves as classics of horror fiction and have also created many of the conventions which still dominate the genre of detective fiction. As well as being highly enjoyable, Poe's tales are works of very real intellectual exploration. Attentive to the historical and political dimensions of these very American tales, this new selection places the most popular -- `The Fall of the House of Usher', `The Masque of the Red Death', `The Murders in the Rue Morgue; and `The Purloined Letter' -- alongside less well-known travel narratives, metaphysical essays and political satires.

Book excerpt: The complete works of the master of horror and suspense in one bumper volume. Few authors' names conjure up such an air of ghoulish terror as that of Edgar Allan Poe. His classic tales of horror and suspense such as The Pit and the Pendulum, The Fall of the House of Usher or The Premature Burial gained an added element of sinister intrigue following the author' s mysterious death in Baltimore in 1849 after being found wandering the streets in a delirious state, wearing clothes that did not belong to him. Although best known for his disturbing gothic horror stories, Poe also wrote mystery thrillers like The Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Mystery of Marie Roget as well as curious tales like The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether. The best of his chilling classics and other suspenseful tales - twenty seven stories in total - are presented here in one fantastic volume, along with Poe's disturbing supernatural poem of love and madness, The Raven.

Edgar Allan Poe (born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American author, poet, editor, and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story, and is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. Born in Boston, he was the second child of two actors. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia. Although they never formally adopted him, Poe was with them well into young adulthood. Tension developed later as John Allan and Edgar repeatedly clashed over debts, including those incurred by gambling, and the cost of secondary education for the young man. Poe attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to lack of money. Poe quarreled with Allan over the funds for his education and enlisted in the Army in 1827 under an assumed name. It was at this time his publishing career began, albeit humbly, with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian". With the death of Frances Allan in 1829, Poe and Allan reached a temporary rapprochement. Later failing as an officer's cadet at West Point and declaring a firm wish to be a poet and writer, Poe parted ways with John Allan.
