This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: ATTRIBUTES OF GOD. UNITY. The works of creation show a designing cause, and they manifest but one designing cause. That there is design in all that we behold is most obvious, and that there must be a designing cause is equally obvious. But that there are more than one designing cause is not in evidence from the universe, and, therefore, to believe a plurality of designing causes is to believe without evidence. God has revealed himself as one in his works: to suppose that there are others who equally possess Godhead is to believe what the documents submitted to us as evidence do not import. Therefore, to believe in a plurality of gods is treason against the God who manifests himself in creation. It is wrong to withhold our faith from what is attested by sufficient evidence; but it is equally wrong to believe that which is not attested by evidence. Now, in all the universe, there is not a trace of evidence to prove that there are more Gods than one. The works of creation know nothing of any God but one. There is a unity of design in all the works of creation and providence, that men of common intellect cannot but perceive; and which is more fully manifest to those who know most of the works of creation and providence. The manifest order of the universe, says Dr. Thomas Brown, in the relation of parts to parts, and of their joint results to other joint results of other parts, is a proof, then, of some designing power, from which all this magnificent order took its rise: and the great Being, to whom, in discovering design, we ascribe the designing power, is the Being whom we denominate God. The harmony which is the proof of design, is itself a proof of the relative unity of that design. This designing power is one, then, in the only sense in which we are entitled to s...

Book The History of Providence

Download or read book The History of Providence written by Alexander Carson and published by Banner of Truth. This book was released on 2012 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Carson lived in an age that was turning away from the revelation of God in Scripture. The dominant philosophy of the times sought to replace the knowledge of the personal, sovereign and provident God of Scripture with a 'more intelligent belief' in the impersonal laws of nature (which are, of course, nothing but the physical laws by which God usually conducts his government of the world). If God exists - and that was a big 'if' - then he is a God who is far removed from the events of every-day life. But truth and Scripture teach that all physical laws have their effect from the immediate agency of God's almighty power. In his works of providence God preserves and governs all his creatures and all their actions. 'In him we live, and move, and have our being' (Acts 17:28). Although Christians recognize this doctrine of Providence, they tend to overlook it in practice. In so doing they lose, in a great measure, that advantage which a constant and deep impression of this truth is calculated to give. In this book, Alexander Carson takes the reader through the Scriptures and points to instances of God's providence that will provide comfort for all true believers.

His attachment to his church. Nothing could induce him to quit the people of his charge, although they were not able to give him more than a mere pittance for his labors. Neither the Greek Professorship in the University of Glasgow, with its annual remuneration of some four or five thousand dollars, nor the allurements presented by some city churches, could persuade him to forsake the poor section of God's heritage of which he had the oversight. The pastoral and the paternal relationship he considered very similar. He considered it as unnatural for a pastor to desert his fond and faithful people as for a father to desert his children. He Wept when a Member was Excluded. I When one of the brethren was publicly excommunicated, the Doctor went home and retired to his garden, where he thought no eye could witness the ebullition of his feelings. One of the deacons of his church followed him to the garden; where, to his surprise, he found his pastor, not meditating, or praying, or glorying over the fallen, but stretched on the green-sward, bitterly weeping. The deacon having, with deference and sympathy, inquired the cause of his affliction, he exclaimed--" Is it a wonder that I weep! have I not this day seen a member of my Lord's body cut off?" How painful it must have been to him to have aided, even under the authority of...

Book Dissent and the Bible in Britain c 1650 1950

Download or read book Dissent and the Bible in Britain c 1650 1950 written by Scott Mandelbrote and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The claim that the Bible was 'the Christian's only rule of faith and practice' has been fundamental to Protestant dissent. Dissenters first braved persecution and then justified their adversarial status in British society with the claim that they alone remained true to the biblical model of Christ's Church. They produced much of the literature that guided millions of people in their everyday reading of Scripture, while the voluntary societies that distributed millions of Bibles to the British and across the world were heavily indebted to Dissent. Yet no single book has explored either what the Bible did for dissenters or what dissenters did to establish the hegemony of the Bible in British culture. The protracted conflicts over biblical interpretation that resulted from the bewildering proliferation of dissenting denominations have made it difficult to grasp their contribution as a whole. This volume evokes the great variety in the dissenting study and use of the Bible while insisting on the factors that gave it importance and underlying unity. Its ten essays range across the period from the later seventeenth to the mid-twentieth century and make reference to all the major dissenting denominations of the United Kingdom. The essays are woven together by a thematic introduction which places the Bible at the centre of dissenting ecclesiology, eschatology, public worship and 'family religion', while charting the political and theological divisions that made the cry of 'the Bible only' so divisive for dissenters in practice.
