Book The Workings of an English Jewish Christian Heart Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Workings of an English Jewish Christian Heart Classic Reprint written by Mark Levy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Workings of an English Jewish Christian Heart There is an almost universal opinion, honestly entertained by the Jews, that no one of the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob truly believes in Jesus as the Son of God, the promised Messiah. In my boyhood, youth, and early manhood, this idea was firmly fixed in my mind; and, whilst possessing a kindly feeling for almost everyone, a very tidal wave of loathing would surge through my heart toward a Jewish convert to Christianity, submerging in its overflow or repulsion the noble feeling of tolerance, the only beacon in the passion-tossed sea of human nature to warn us where to steer clear of the cruel rocks of bigotry, off the sullen coast of religious fanaticism, upon which so many of God's children have been wrecked, but whereon the love-light of mercy never shines. Book The Accommodated Jew

Download or read book The Accommodated Jew written by Kathy Lavezzo and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: England during the Middle Ages was at the forefront of European antisemitism. It was in medieval Norwich that the notorious "blood libel" was first introduced when a resident accused the city's Jewish leaders of abducting and ritually murdering a local boy. England also enforced legislation demanding that Jews wear a badge of infamy, and in 1290, it became the first European nation to expel forcibly all of its Jewish residents. In The Accommodated Jew, Kathy Lavezzo rethinks the complex and contradictory relation between England’s rejection of "the Jew" and the centrality of Jews to classic English literature. Drawing on literary, historical, and cartographic texts, she charts an entangled Jewish imaginative presence in English culture. In a sweeping view that extends from the Anglo-Saxon period to the late seventeenth century, Lavezzo tracks how English writers from Bede to Milton imagine Jews via buildings—tombs, latrines and especially houses—that support fantasies of exile. Epitomizing this trope is the blood libel and its implication that Jews cannot be accommodated in England because of the anti-Christian violence they allegedly perform in their homes. In the Croxton Play of the Sacrament, Marlowe’s The Jew of Malta, and Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, the Jewish house not only serves as a lethal trap but also as the site of an emerging bourgeoisie incompatible with Christian pieties. Lavezzo reveals the central place of "the Jew" in the slow process by which a Christian "nation of shopkeepers" negotiated their relationship to the urban capitalist sensibility they came to embrace and embody. In the book’s epilogue, she advances her inquiry into Victorian England and the relationship between Charles Dickens (whose Fagin is the second most infamous Jew in English literature after Shylock) and the Jewish couple that purchased his London home, Tavistock House, showing how far relations between gentiles and Jews in England had (and had not) evolved.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Teachers of Judaism and Christianity Judaism has always been in the truest sense a teaching religion. It has depended primarily for its perpetuation and extension not upon preach ing, or upon creeds, or upon the mere forms of worship, but upon the personal touch of the teacher and those taught. It has also strongly emphasized the supreme importance of the defi nite and continuous education of the individual, beginning with earliest childhood. These words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart; and thou shalt impress them upon thy children, and thou shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Thou shalt bind them as a reminder on thy hand, and have them as bands on thy forehead between thine eyes, and thou shalt mark them on the posts of thy house and on thy doors (dent. 6. 6. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British and Foreign Evangelical Review, 1870, Vol. 19 Be these things as they may, we have in this treatise the queries and objections of a Jew met by the counter queries and answers of a Christian, in a style reminding us at once of the classic elegance and caustic acuteness of Calvin, and presenting a short and striking resume of Jewish unbelief, on the one hand, and Christian faith on the other. Out of twenty-three pointed queries by the Jew, and as many terse replications by the Christian, we quote only the following - I ask, says the Jew, if Christ is God, why He calls himself the Son of Man, when in many places of Scripture the law warns us not to make God like to a man? As, God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the Son of Man, that He should repent' (numb. Xxiii. Besides, David says, 'put not your trust in princes, nor in the Son of Man, in whom there is no help (ps. Cxlvi. In like manner, cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh esh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the lord' (j er. Xvii. But all these things were in Jesus, who is called the Son of Man. I ask, says the Christian, why God in the Song of Moses is called 'a man of war 2 (exod. Xv. Why Ezekiel, in that memorable vision, tells us that, upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it; this was the ap pearance of the likeness of the glory of the lord' (ezek.
