Download or read book The Work and Words of the National Congress of Mothers Classic Reprint written by National Congress Of Mothers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work and Words of the National Congress of Mothers These matters will be presented to the Congress by men and women foremost in such work and whose names are everywhere known and revered. As the time intervening between this and the Mothers' Con gress is comparatively brief, it behooves all who feel an interest in the cause to be up and doing. The plan of procedure is sim ple. Every city and town and village has its organizations and clubs for various purposes. Let each one of these call a special meeting and form a mothers' club in which all can unite. We will furnish, on application from the secretary of such clubs, suggestions which may prove helpful in the conduct of the meetings, which should be held every week for awhile, if possi ble, in order that the need for this work may be clearly set forth and that delegates may be decided upon for the N ational Con gress in February. It is desired that all who can will attend the national meeting; but as it is possible that only a minor pro portion of the mothers will be able to come, it is essential for each organization to send at least one delegate, who can carry back a detailed account of the meetings, and be prepared to in struct the home club in the methods to be pursued for ensuing years, it being a part of the plan to have the national organiza tion hold regular annual meetings hereafter. Book Raising America

Download or read book Raising America written by Ann Hulbert and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-01-26 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the twentieth century, millions of anxious parents have turned to child-rearing manuals for reassurance. Instead, however, they have often found yet more cause for worry. In this rich social history, Ann Hulbert analyzes one hundred years of shifting trends in advice and discovers an ongoing battle between two main approaches: a “child-centered” focus on warmly encouraging development versus a sterner “parent-centered” emphasis on instilling discipline. She examines how pediatrics, psychology, and neuroscience have fueled the debates but failed to offer definitive answers. And she delves into the highly relevant and often turbulent personal lives of the popular advice-givers, from L. Emmett Holt and Arnold Gesell to Bruno Bettelheim and Benjamin Spock to the prominent (and ever conflicting) experts of today.

Book I Could Not Call Her Mother

Download or read book I Could Not Call Her Mother written by Leslie J. Lindenauer and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of the stepmother, the substitute mother, or the “other mother” have infused popular culture for centuries and continue to do so today. She plays a substantial role in our collective imagination, whether we are a part of a step family or not. Despite the fact that the stepmother remains a prevalent figure, both in popular culture and reality, scholars have largely avoided addressing this fraught figure. I Could Not Call Her Mother explores representations of the stepmother in American popular culture from the colonial period to 1960. The archetypal stepmother appears from nineteenth-century romance novels and advice literature to 1930s pulp fiction and film noir. Leslie J. Lindenauer argues that when considered in her historic context, the stepmother serves as a bellwether for changing constructions of motherhood and family. She examines popular culture's role in shaping and reflecting an increasingly normative middle class definition of the ideal mother and family, which by the 1920s became the dominant construct. Lindenauer adds to the rich and growing literature on the history of motherhood. It echoes and is informed by the scholarship that has defined ideal motherhood as a moving target, historically constructed. In so doing, it illuminates the relationship between ideal motherhood and ideal womanhood.
