Book Reading Pakeha

Download or read book Reading Pakeha written by Christina Stachurski and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2009 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aotearoa New Zealand, "a tiny Pacific country," is of great interest to those engaged in postcolonial and literary studies throughout the world. In all former colonies, myths of national identity are vested with various interests. Shifts in collective Pakeha (or New Zealand-European) identity have been marked by the phenomenal popularity of three novels, each at a time of massive social change. Late-colonialism, anti-imperialism, and the collapse of the idea of a singular 'nation' can be traced through the reception of John Mulgan's Man Alone (1939), Keri Hulme's the bone people (1983), and Alan Duff's Once Were Warriors (1990). Yet close analysis of these three novels also reveals marginalization and silencing in claims to singular Pakeha identity and a linear development of settler acculturation. Such a dynamic resonates with that of other 'settler' cultures - the similarities and differences telling in comparison. Specifically, Reading Pakeha? Fiction and Identity in Aotearoa New Zealand explores how concepts of race and ethnicity intersect with those of gender, sex, and sexuality. This book also asks whether 'Pakeha' is still a meaningful term.

Download or read book A Companion to E M Forster written by Sunil Kumar Sarker and published by Atlantic Publishers & Dist. This book was released on 2007 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Great Novelist, A Learned And Wise Critic, And A Charming Short-Story Writer Can These Three Reside In A Single Person? Yes, But, Of Course, In A Very Few, And E.M. Forster Is Certainly One Of Those Very Few, And That He Is Par Excellence. Any Knowledge Of Modern English Novel Without Even An Acquaintance With Forster Is Absurdly Incomplete. All Of Forster S Six Novels, Perhaps Barring Only Maurice, Have Been And Are Being Printed And Re-Printed In Hundreds Of Thousands Of Copies, And All The Six But Perhaps The Longest Journey Have Been Filmed By Worthy Directors, Such As Lean And Merchant, And The Films Have Received And Are Receiving High And Spontaneous Acclamations. As Said, Forster Is Also An Outstanding Critic And Will Go A Long Way Down The History Of Criticism As Much As He Will Be Remembered As A Highly Fantastic But Excellent Short-Story Writer For A Long Time To Come As He Is Today. This Compendium-Like Book, Split Into Three Volumes, Contains Discussions On All The Six Novels Of Forster Where Angles Fear To Tread, The Longest Journey, A Room With A View, Howards End, Maurice And A Passage To India. Besides, The Study Includes His Twelve Prime Short Stories, And His Critical Acumen And Theories. It Does Not Harbour No, It Carefully Avoids Any Pretension Or Pedantry, But It Comprises Almost All The Matters Relevant To Forsteriana, Plainly But Rather Expatiatingly Treated, So That It Is Expected To Help, Yeoman-Like, Certainly Not The Avant-Garde But The Sophomores. An In-Depth Study Of Forster As A Novelist And As A Critic Provided Herein Adds To The Value Of The Book. Furthermore, Quotations Included In The Appendix, Bibliography And Index Would Serve As Useful Study-Aids For The Readers.

Book Philosophical Logical and Scientific Perspectives in Engineering

Download or read book Philosophical Logical and Scientific Perspectives in Engineering written by Zekâi Şen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-14 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights and explains the significance of philosophical, logical, and scientific principles for engineering education/training and engineering works. In so doing, it aims to help to rectify the neglect of philosophy and logic in current education and training programs, which emphasize analytical and numerical methods at the expense of the innovative practical and creative abilities so important for engineering in the past. Individual chapters examine the relation of philosophy, logic, and science to engineering, drawing attention to, for example, the significance of ethics, the relevance of the philosophy of science, and the increasing importance of application of fuzzy logic to engineering. Modeling principles and philosophy in engineering are discussed, and the impact of different education systems, examined. Too often engineers have become reliant on readily available formulations and software; this book offers an antidote, promoting the recognition of artistic and humanitarian aspects and their integration in engineering works.
