Book excerpt: We are becoming more unhealthy with each passing generation. As our lives speed by, we turn to fast food, processed dinners, and exercise is replaced with 'vegging out' on the couch. But our bodies belong to God and we are to honor Him with our bodies. How do we do this? According to Dr. Michael Jacobson, good health practices are those that begin with placing the Creator in His proper place. In A Word on Health, Dr. Jacobson argues that the church must lay a biblical foundation for health care, taking seriously the Bible's promises for health and long life. He provides very practical steps every believer should take when facing illness. Dr. Jacobson covers a wide variety of subjects most often debated and wondered about within the Christian church. Some of those topics include: Bible's promises of long life and health, Types of sickness, Diet and doctrine, Nutrition and the Bible, The role of stress and illness, Learn to treat your health in a manner that honors God. Book Improving Health in the Community

Download or read book Improving Health in the Community written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-05-21 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do communities protect and improve the health of their populations? Health care is part of the answer but so are environmental protections, social and educational services, adequate nutrition, and a host of other activities. With concern over funding constraints, making sure such activities are efficient and effective is becoming a high priority. Improving Health in the Community explains how population-based performance monitoring programs can help communities point their efforts in the right direction. Within a broad definition of community health, the committee addresses factors surrounding the implementation of performance monitoring and explores the "why" and "how to" of establishing mechanisms to monitor the performance of those who can influence community health. The book offers a policy framework, applies a multidimensional model of the determinants of health, and provides sets of prototype performance indicators for specific health issues. Improving Health in the Community presents an attainable vision of a process that can achieve community-wide health benefits.

You will discover: What we should and should not eat to enjoy maximum physical health. How food is intimately connected to our spiritual well being. Why Latter-day Saints are succumbing to the same chronic diseases as the rest of the population, despite not smoking, drinking, or doing drugs. Why eating the foods God has ordained for our use is better not just for our bodies, but for the animals and for the earth. Book Faith Health and Prosperity

Download or read book Faith Health and Prosperity written by Andrew Perriman and published by Paternoster. This book was released on 2003 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church has always been of two minds about the spiritual value of material wealth. In its public statement, if not always in practice, it has usually taken a position on the moral high ground, renouncing excessive wealth in favor of a modest and sacrificial lifestyle. But the gospel has also been a force for self-betterment and a catalyst for social progress and the creation of wealth. Offering a detailed history of this movement, the contributors examine the relationship between faith and wealth in the Old and New Testaments and New Testament church, searching for an evangelical viewpoint on faith, health and prosperity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Census Bureau, in 2003 more than 43 million Americans lacked health insurance. Being uninsured is associated with a range of adverse health, social, and economic consequences for individuals and their families, for the health care systems in their communities, and for the nation as a whole. This report is the sixth and final report in a series by the Committee on the Consequences of Uninsurance, intended to synthesize what is known about these consequences and communicate the extent and urgency of the issue to the public. Insuring America's Health recommends principles related to universality, continuity of coverage, affordability to individuals and society, and quality of care to guide health insurance reform. These principles are based on the evidence reviewed in the committee's previous five reports and on new analyses of past and present federal, state, and local efforts to reduce uninsurance. The report also demonstrates how those principles can be used to assess policy options. The committee does not recommend a specific coverage strategy. Rather, it shows how various approaches could extend coverage and achieve certain of the committee's principles.

Book excerpt: When Cassidy Gundersen was only 24 years old, she was diagnosed with many different serious health conditions, indicating that she was going to die young. Frustrated that she was not receiving the promised blessings of the Word of Wisdom even though she obeyed with what she thought was exactness, Cassidy and her husband Jordan set out to learn all they could about health from the scriptures, especially Doctrine and Covenants 89. What they found was life-changing. The Word of Wisdom: Hope, Healing, and the Destroying Angel is a fresh look at Doctrine and Covenants 89 according to the scriptures, modern prophets, and scientific research. With so many Latter-day Saints suffering from chronic health conditions these days, the principles contained in this book have the power to help each individual realize the promises of health made by the Lord. Perhaps just as important are the implications these principles have for the last days.

This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.
