Book excerpt: Preaching mediates the word of God into a cultural matrix. And no American preaching has done so more effectively and powerfully than African American preaching, claims noted homiletician James Harris. Known for its rhetorical strength, social-justice orientation, and dead-on connection to the community's lived experience, black preaching is here analyzed and proposed as a model for all preaching. Harris grounds black preaching in the self-understanding of the historic black church and its most prominent preachers, from Martin Luther King Jr. to Samuel Proctor. Harris also explores the hermeneutical and aesthetic dimensions of preaching, especially at the intersection of sacred text and the broader culture. He then lays out the specific distinguishing characteristics of black preaching, including verbal cadence and rhythm, use of gestures, and, most thoroughly, the narrative model of the sermon. His last chapter, ''Preaching Plainly,'' provides specific instructions on how to put the sermon together employing this model.

Book Plain Theology for Plain People

Download or read book Plain Theology for Plain People written by Charles Octavius Boothe and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday Christians need practical and accessible theology. In this handbook first published in 1890, Charles Octavius Boothe simply and beautifully lays out the basics of theology for common people. "Before the charge 'know thyself,'" Boothe wrote, "ought to come the far greater charge, 'know thy God.'" He brought the heights of academic theology down to everyday language, and he helps us do the same today. Plain Theology for Plain People shows that evangelicalism needs the wisdom and experience of African American Christians. Walter R. Strickland II reintroduces this forgotten masterpiece for today. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.

Poetry has the power to enliven, challenge, change, and enrich our lives. But it can also feel intimidating, confusing, or simply “not for us.” In these joyful and wise reflections, Abram Van Engen shows readers how poetry is for everyone—and how it can reinvigorate our Christian faith. Intertwining close readings with personal storytelling, Van Engen explains how and why to read poems as a spiritual practice. Far from dry, academic instruction, his approach encourages readers to delight in poetry, even as they come to understand its form. He also opens up the meaning of poetry and parables in Scripture, revealing the deep connection between literature and theology. Word Made Fresh is more than a guide to poetry—it’s an invitation to wonder, to speak up, to lament, to praise. Including dozens of poems from diverse authors, this book will inspire curious and thoughtful readers to see God and God’s creation in surprising new ways.

Book The Word Became Flesh

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graham Jackman
  • Publisher : Lulu.com
  • Release : 2016-12-16

  • Pages : 380 pages

Download or read book The Word Became Flesh written by Graham Jackman and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-12-16 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this book, taken from John 1:14, is normally taken to refer to the notion of 'incarnation', which understands 'the word' as a pre-existent Son of God and 'becoming flesh' as the transformation of this 'word' from a heavenly, divine existence to the life of a human being. Against this conventional interpretation the author argues that John's use of the term 'word' really does refer to an act of speaking, God's expression of His will, and that 'becoming flesh' describes the realisation or embodiment of His intentions, from creation onward, in a form perceptible to human senses, not only in the 'flesh' of Jesus but also in historical reality in the world of men. This has implications for other aspects of John's Gospel, including its historicity, its literary form, and its relationship to the Old Testament, and leads to very different conclusions about the central issue in John's Gospel, the person of Jesus and his relationship to God the Father and to those who believe in him.

Book I Trusted the Process

Download or read book I Trusted the Process written by Nicholas A. Meade and published by Nicholas A. Meade Ministries. This book was released on 2020-04-12 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the process of seminary transform? Why do you believe what you believe? What are some effective methods for preaching? How can one be empowered to minister to the masses? I Trusted the Process is a reflection upon how one’s sojourn through seminary answers these questions. Join the author on a journey back in time where his experience or process in seminary transformed him and profoundly shifted the way that he thinks and ministers. While some cast doubt on the worth of seminary, even going to great lengths of labeling it a cemetery, the author’s works collected in this volume from his time in seminary show how seminary can challenge someone; how it challenges someone to the extent that if that someone trusts the process, that someone will come out better on the other side. I Trusted the Process provides models and example work from seminary that readers can use to do their own work of determining what they believe and why. Works within this volume also provide examples of biblical exegesis, preaching methodologies at work, reflections on written works and of holistic ministry, and a pattern for articulating one’s own Christology, among other things. Navigating through this book for those unable to attend seminary can serve as its own type of process. It also provides insight into the mind of one who seeks to help change the world. If one is to believe the glowing words from the foreword and the cover, such a mind is worth exploration. He can say: I Trusted the Process. Can you?

WHAT I purpose in the following pages is, to give a plain and distinct account of the steps by which I was led, during the course of many years, to embrace the doctrine of Christian Perfection. This I owe to the serious part of mankind; those who desire to know all the truth as it is in Jesus. And these only are concerned with questions of this kind. To these I would nakedly declare the thing as it is, endeavoring all along to show, from one period to another, both what I thought, and why I thought so."
