Download or read book The Word and the Spiritual Realities the I and the Thou written by Ferdinand Ebner and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume will constitute the first published English translation of Ferdinand Ebner’s seminal 1921 work, Das Wort und die geistigen realitäten – long available in major languages but never in English. It is frequently compared with Martin Buber’s, I and Thou, published in 1923, which actually draws its central I-Thou insight from Ebner. In recent centuries, Philosophy reflects a turn toward the autonomous subject vs. a biblical sense of person. The limits/failures of science manifest in the horrors of World War I led to the emergence of a “Dialogical Personalist Philosophy” in reaction to the universal doubt of Cartesian thought and to German Idealism, which engages the idea or representation but not the reality of “things-in-themselves.” The core of Ebner: human speech is constitutive of human existence: humans are given the "word." "Having the word" is a miraculous gift from God. It is only in the word, in language, that an "I" meets a "Thou," that relationship and self-identity can occur, and this word is given in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh: “In the beginning was the Word”; Jesus, the Logos of St. John's Gospel, mediates between God and man and “stands” between I and Thou. It is through Jesus that it is possible to address God in the human thou. The key to life’s meaning, to the centrality of relationship, and to God's continuous action in His creation, is found in the I-Thou question: why the I can never be found in itself, and so must look in the thou, while the false I will try to possess the thou as an object of power. This is Ebner's critique of idealist thought: reality, truth, and personal identity are neither ideas, nor found in ideas, therefore, Descartes' cogito must be rejected, for the existence of the I can't be founded or proved by solitary thinking, but only in relation with a thou.

Download or read book Biblical Interpretation and the Church written by D. A. Carson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2002-12-03 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All too often problems of biblical hermeneutics are too closely linked to technical biblical study rather than to the day-by-day issues confronting the church. Here, however, eight international scholars from seven countries show how such studies can have vital relevance to today's immediate problems and needs. The writers focus on the biblical doctrine of the church itself and how the church carries out its mission in various cultures. Originally presented as lectures at Tyndale House in Cambridge, England, these essays have been revised in light of the discussion and criticism that followed. They include careful biblical analyses of the nature of the church, its opponents, and of such modern concerns as social justice and liberation theology. The result is a stimulating reassessment of the role that Scripture plays in bringing Christ to persons within their cultural contexts.

Download or read book Invisible Jesus written by Bill McConnell and published by . This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "He would not say that he was depressed; he would not say that he was discouraged; he would not say that he was unhappy. Whatever he was feeling had been coming for a long time, of that he was sure. He thought for a few moments, trying to put into words why he was sitting there, and then the right word revealed itself to him. He was not tired, he was dead. He had no life, no spark of spirituality in his spirit. He thought of the Jackson Brown song, "Running on Empty," which had been a favorite of his when he was much younger. He had been running for years, and now he realized he had nothing left in the tank. He kept looking at the black leather Bible, unwilling to open it, for the first time in his life wondering if the answer he was looking for was to be found in its pages." Excerpt from Invisible Jesus.
Download or read book Soul Transformation written by Donald W Ekstrand and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three steps of salvation in a nutshell are these - becoming a Christian; living the Christian life; and going to heaven. Theologians refer to these three steps as Justification, Sanctification, and Glorification. The first and third steps are instantaneous experiences, but the second step (sanctification) is a life long process whereby the Holy Spirit works in the believer's life to bring about practical holiness and transform his character into the likeness of Christ. It is this second step of salvation with which the believer struggles, because it requires putting to death the deeds of the body (saying "no" to our sin nature), and obeying the promptings of the Holy Spirit (saying "yes" to God) - this is the essence of spiritual warfare. Sadly, most churches in the West today pretty much ignore the issue of Sanctification, and just focus on Justification - either out of ignorance about what Scripture teaches, or out of fear that living a holy life is essentially "legalism." But living a life of obedience to Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit has nothing to do with legalism - legalists think they "gain favor with God" by being good, but believers obey Christ out of gratitude because they already "have favor with God!" The "key" to sanctified living is gratitude! The Bible emphatically describes God as being both loving and holy, yet western Christianity primarily focuses on God's love, and says almost nothing at all about His holiness. As such, the central message of most churches is one of love and forgiveness, with scarcely a word being said about holiness and death to sin and self. Satan is thrilled with our one dimensional Christianity, because it essentially leaves believers lukewarm, impotent and ineffectual. This book presents God's blueprint for spiritual development and portrays the "transformational experiences" every believer goes through in life - they include ups and downs, highs and lows, peaks and valleys, joy and suffering, victory and defeat - these experiences are the "norm" for every believer; none of us get a painless, trouble-free road to glory. Incidentally, the material presented in this book reflects the teachings of the most respected Christian theologians since the reformation - individuals the evangelical community has long recognized as being "pillars of the faith." To our lamentable regret, however, these teachings no longer have a prominent place in the vast majority of churches in the West. It is time for believers in America today to reconsider the fullness of God's call upon their lives. Donald W. Ekstrand is a retired pastor, adjunct professor, and author. Dr. Ekstrand holds degrees in finance, business education, theology and divinity, and is a graduate of Arizona State University, Talbot School of Theology, and Western Seminary. What would life be like if you could always make the right decisions and knew what to do about every circumstance? We are born again with the ability to have spiritual discernment, and this ability must be trained and unlocked. "Connecting" will train your spiritual sensitivity and you will be able to: Accurately hear the Lord Discern between the false and the true, the wrong and the right. Make correct decisions. Know God's specific will for your life Uncover the counterfeit. Understand the Word. Become more spiritually mature. Prophet Lora Allison says, "Connecting is a Must Read for everyone who is hungry for a true experiential relationship with the Lord! Dr. Kluane Spake has a unique way of saying things in fresh verbage guaranteed to open up closed perspectives and entrenched mindsets. All of us need to take a closer look at truths designed to CONNECT us to the One who desires relationship with us above all. Connecting will trigger that more critical "now than ever before intimacy with God." My heart leaped for joy and there were nights while reading that I could not put the book down...the Spirit just kept prodding me on to turn the next page and the next. I have been reading it every spare moment that I have! " Rev. D. Bellcour, Gospel Truth CONNECTING is one of those rare books that remain fresh with each reading. The first time through I couldn't put it down even though I knew I was only getting a little of what was there. The second time I stopped and pondered each section doing the suggested exercises and marveling how the Lord has gifted Dr. Spake with the ability to put into words truths we have only seen dimly and certainly could not communicate. I have completed a third reading and am now (fourth time) leading a weekly group meeting to study the book along with associated scriptures and concepts. I recommend this as a great group study! Together we are exploring and seeing God open our eyes and deepen our understanding of His eternal purpose. Traditions are confirmed or rejected, vision expands . . . it's fantastic. There is so much more God wants to do with His people than previously realized. Connecting opens the door for greater vision -- it is only as we see that we can enter in. Rev. Pat Joyce I've been getting some awesome teaching... It's this book I've been reading called "Connecting." (Maybe you've heard of it?) A couple of pages out of that book beats a month of even quality sermons. This is not a suck-up but the absolute truth. I am loving it! Rev. Paul Wolack Our entire church has been studying Dr. Kluane's Book 'Connecting - How to apprehend spiritual realities.' This book over the past TWO YEARS, and we have found it to be very beneficial in our awakening to the finished work of Jesus Christ. The book lends itself to discussion, and this has been an integral part of our growth. As pastors, our main objective is to have every precious person realizing the treasure of Christ in them, and thereby be able to contribute to the growth of the local body uniquely and individually as they find freedom by embracing truth. ... While reading 'Connecting', veils were whisked away from the eyes of our understanding. It is a book that even after several reads continues to reveal unchartered truth. Dr Spake has well-harnessed the NOW word of God, and presents it in a way that is palatable, ever present, and ever revelatory. We highly recommend your church study this book, as it enhances and emphasizes our identity - Christ Jesus. When we begin to wake up to who we really are, our whole perception changes and we begin to view the world through HIS eyes. Read this book ... it will change your life like it did ours.
