As to the particular form in which the descriptive narrative (of creation) is conveyed, we merely affirm that it cannot be History?it may be Poetry.?Rev. Baden Powell, M.A., F.R.S., F.L.S., F.O.S., Savilian Profettor of Geometry in the University of Oxford. Art. Creation, in Kitto't Biblical Cyclopadia. In order correctly to understand the written documents of antiquity, it is necessary to know something of the genius of the people among whom they were produced. Without this information, we are liable to great mistakes. Very different styles of writing have prevailed among the same nations at successive periods of their existence; and the deeper we penetrate into their mental history, the less literal and more poetical shall we find their methods of communication. This fact is not to be disregarded in prosecuting the inquiry we have now before us. It bears forcibly upon the point; and this leads us to ask, Whether Antediluvian History, as contained in the Bible, was written in accordance with that historical and grammatical criticism by which it has been common to interpret it in modern times ? We think not. The record of creation has been found to give way before the discoveries and demands of science. The genius of a matter-of-fact people is not the precise thing by which to judge of the literary productions of a period essentially spiritual and poetical. Therefore we may again ask, Whether this peculiar condition of mind, which prevailed during the early periods of our race, when these remarkable documents were originally produced, may not have induced them to describe mental existences and moral processes in an historical form ? May not the rise of the human mind out of inac...

Book excerpt: Treats of the word of God in its historical formation and in its life in the Church. It treats, then, of the speech which God necessarily employs in his dialogue with mankind. Through an analysis of the functions of language, of the psychology of literary inspiration, of the social context of all speech, of the nature, the translation and the reception of the completed work, the author develops a theory of Biblical inspiration which is integral and organic because it is faithful both to the divine and the human aspect of God's word.

Book Inspiration Explains Itself

Download or read book Inspiration Explains Itself written by John B. Champion and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Its inspiration makes the Scripture a Divine Light which can never fail. Men may fail it and turn their backs upon it; but all undimmed it shines on throughout the centuries. Clearly, our attitude to a man's word is our attitude to him. But how much more does God's word represent God. When our first parents withheld trust in what God had said, little did they realize they were abandoning God himself. No one can maintain faith in the Father, and at the same time reject or ignore his word. How remarkable that the very first assault of evil on this earth was upon what God had said! "Yea, hath God said? . . . Lest ye die . . . Ye shall not surely die." This Satanic line of opposition has never ceased from that day to this. All onset upon the Bible runs true to form. The van of the devil's army is still blasting away at the Scriptures. However, this long war upon the word will completely fail despite all Satan's wiles and persistence. This mighty conflict of the ages will end in the utter rout of all the enemies of Holy Writ. "The truth of Jehovah endureth for ever" (Ps. 117: 2). "But the Word of the Lord abideth for ever" (1 Peter 1: 25).

Book excerpt: This document's purpose is to spell out the Church's understanding of the nature of revelation--the process whereby God communicates with human beings. It touches upon questions about Scripture, tradition, and the teaching authority of the Church. The major concern of the document is to proclaim a Catholic understanding of the Bible as the "word of God." Key elements include: Trinitarian structure, roles of apostles and bishops, and biblical reading in a historical context.
