Book excerpt: The Word Among Us: Theologies of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament is a topical approach to the study of the Judeo/Christian Bible. Each topic is a survey of the many theological themes we encounter in the Biblical narrative such as the theology of Biblical History, Torah, Moses, Election, Covenant, Land, Kingship, Prophecy, and many more. Special topics include The Theology of the Fall of Israel, Theology of Messianic Expectations, and The Theology of Israel. Of particular interest is The Theology of Story which introduces the story-oriented literary discipline. At the center of Biblical theology is the tragic fall of the Northern Kingdom of Israel in 722 B.C.E. and the Southern Kingdom of Judah in 586 B.C.E. From these periods many of the theological motifs, such as covenant, law, and prophecy, arise to address and to explain these tragedies in Israelite history. The primary purpose of the present study is a better understanding of the theological function of these motifs or themes. A theological function is the power of a Biblical narrative to constitute and to restore the Israelite people who were struggling to survive the late period of Biblical history. A special feature of my study are the several promptings from Biblical topics of the many discussions that relate to the New Testament and Christian teachings. My approach to the study of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament is unique among other introductions to the Hebrew Bible. This book therefore is very important to both the Jewish and the Christian reader.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book Sources in American Constitutional History

Download or read book Sources in American Constitutional History written by Michael Les Benedict and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second revised and expanded edition of this invaluable reader, Michael Les Benedict draws together the important documents that have shaped and been shaped by the American Constitution from medieval times through the present day. It includes not only the most important Supreme Court decisions, but also key American declarations, resolutions, laws, and platforms. All these documents represent, in a sense, the formal expression of the American people's ongoing contract with each other. The documents in the reader are organized into chapters corresponding to those in the third edition of The Blessings of Liberty: A Concise History of the Constitution of the United States. However, since they reflect the generally accepted canon of American constitutional history, they may supplement any textbook or other readings. The brief introductory headnotes provide information about the social, political, and intellectual context in which each document first appeared.

  • Pages : 370 pages

Download or read book Christ written by Jack Miles and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2002-11-05 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the same passionate scholarship and analytical audacity he brought to the character of God, Jack Miles now approaches the literary and theological enigma of Jesus. In so doing, he tells the story of a broken promise–God’s ancient covenant with Israel–and of its strange, unlooked-for fulfillment. For, having abandoned his chosen people to an impending holocaust at the hands of their Roman conquerors. God, in the person of Jesus, chooses to die with them, in what is effectively an act of divine suicide. On the basis of this shocking argument, Miles compels us to reassess Christ’s entire life and teaching: His proclivity for the powerless and disgraced. His refusal to discriminate between friends and enemies. His transformation of defeat into a victory that redeems not just Israel but the entire world. Combining a close reading of the Gospels with a range of reference that includes Donne, Nietzche, and Elie Wiesel, Christ: A Crisis in the Life of God is a work of magnificent eloquence and imagination.
