Woody Guthrie and his passionate social politics are as crucial today as they have ever been. ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL SONGWRITERS IN AMERICAN MUSIC HISTORY: Woody Guthrie has had a profound impact on American musicians, writers, politicians (and the everyman who found solace and kinship in Guthrie's writings and political beliefs), who have been shaped by his music and activism – namely the great founding father of songwriting himself, Bob Dylan, for whom he was a mentor. Book Bound for Glory

Download or read book Bound for Glory written by Woody Guthrie and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1983-09-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1943, this autobiography is also a superb portrait of America's Depression years, by the folk singer, activist, and man who saw it all. Woody Guthrie was born in Oklahoma and traveled this whole country over—not by jet or motorcycle, but by boxcar, thumb, and foot. During the journey of discovery that was his life, he composed and sang words and music that have become a national heritage. His songs, however, are but part of his legacy. Behind him Woody Guthrie left a remarkable autobiography that vividly brings to life both his vibrant personality and a vision of America we cannot afford to let die. “Even readers who never heard Woody or his songs will understand the current esteem in which he’s held after reading just a few pages… Always shockingly immediate and real, as if Woody were telling it out loud… A book to make novelists and sociologists jealous.” —The Nation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This Land Is Your Land" is the most iconic folk song in American history, and is the masterwork of one of America's greatest artists, Woody Guthrie. Written in 1940 and first recorded in 1944, the song became an instant hit, and then a point of controversy, and finally a cross-generation anthem. It's been co-opted and rewritten in many other countries. Praised for its heartfelt lyrics and accompanying pride and spirit, no folk song has made such a lasting impression on American culture -- or stirred as much controversy. The book will publish to coincide with "Woody at 100" -- a partnership between the Grammy Museum and the Guthrie Archives to stage numerous celebratory events throughout 2012 nationwide and beyond. This Land Is Your Land is a remarkably detailed account of the journey of America's most celebrated folk song. It also details Guthrie's legendary journey from Oklahoma across the Heartland to New York City, where he wrote many of his works including "This Land Is Your Land." With more than forty rare black-and-white photographs from the Woody Guthrie archives plus original interviews with Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Pete Seeger, John Mellencamp, and more, This Land Is Your Land delivers a revealing portrait of an American treasure.

Book Chronicles 1 of 6 The Description of Britaine

Download or read book Chronicles 1 of 6 The Description of Britaine written by Raphaell Holinshed and published by AMS PRESS INC.. This book was released on 2013 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronicles (1 of 6): The Description of Britaine The chronicles of holinshed having become exceedingly scarce, and, from their Rarity and Value, having always brought a high Price whenever they have appeared for Sale, the Publishers have thought they should perform an acceptable Service to the Public by reprinting them in a uniform, handsome, and modern Form. It cannot now be necessary to state the Importance and interesting Nature of this Work. The high Price for which it has always sold, is a sufficient Testimony of the Esteem in which it has been held. Holinshed's Description of Britain is allowed to contain the most curious and authentic Account of the Manners and Customs of our Island in the Reign of Henry VIII. and Elizabeth, in which it was written. His History of the Transactions of the British Isles, during these Periods, possesses all the Force and Value of contemporary Evidence, collected by a most skilful Observer; and the peculiar Style and Orthography in which the Work is written, furnish a very interesting Document to illustrate the History of the English Language. The original Edition of the Chronicles of Holinshed, it is well known, was published by their Author in a mutilated State. A Number of Pages, which had obviously been printed with the rest of the Work, were found to be omitted, except in a few Copies obtained by some favoured Persons. In the present Edition, these Castrations are faithfully restored; and in order that the Purchaser may depend upon finding an exact as well as a perfect Copy, it has been a Law with the Publishers, not to alter a single Letter, but to print the Work with the utmost Fidelity from the best preceding Edition, with the Author's own Orthography, and with his marginal Notes. The only Liberty taken, has been to use the Types of the present Day, instead of the old English Letter of the Time of Elizabeth. The Publishers submit to the Public this Edition of a curious and valuable Chronicle of our History, with a confident Hope, that it will gratify both the Historical Student and the General Reader. If it meet with the Reception which they anticipate, they will be encouraged to select some others of the rarest and most important of our ancient Chronicles, and reprint them, in like Manner, for the Convenience and Gratification of the Public.

  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2013-02-05
  • ISBN : 0062248413
  • Pages : 155 pages

Download or read book House of Earth written by Woody Guthrie and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller Finished in 1947 and lost to readers until now, House of Earth is legendary folk singer and American icon Woody Guthrie’s only finished novel. A powerful portrait of Dust Bowl America, it’s the story of an ordinary couple’s dreams of a better life and their search for love and meaning in a corrupt world. Tike and Ella May Hamlin are struggling to plant roots in the arid land of the Texas panhandle. The husband and wife live in a precarious wooden farm shack, but Tike yearns for a sturdy house that will protect them from the treacherous elements. Thanks to a five-cent government pamphlet, Tike has the know-how to build a simple adobe dwelling, a structure made from the land itself—fireproof, windproof, Dust Bowl-proof. A house of earth. A story of rural realism and progressive activism, and in many ways a companion piece to Guthrie’s folk anthem “This Land Is Your Land,” House of Earth is a searing portrait of hardship and hope set against a ravaged landscape. Combining the moral urgency and narrative drive of John Steinbeck with the erotic frankness of D. H. Lawrence, here is a powerful tale of America from one of our greatest artists. An essay by bestselling historian Douglas Brinkley and Johnny Depp introduce House of Earth, the inaugural title in Depp’s imprint at HarperCollins, Infinitum Nihil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Disclaimer by Miss Bea Righteous Well, my heavens! Where do I begin? First and foremost, while calamity may seem the result of my well-intentioned actions at the Gnarly Woods Senior Complex, I would like to make it clear that it is my mandate from above to protect the vulnerable, young and old, from taking that slippery slope into the devil's lair. Perhaps inadvertent collateral damage has occurred but I must preface the recounting of my struggles with the devil and his minions by declaring that I am held harmless from any and all such incidental damage or harm. Upon your wise purchase of this book (transformative!) and upon reading the chronicles within, I am fully confident that you will fully exonerate me from any wrongdoing and agree that I am on the path of righteousness. Though, of course, I do not expect any fanfare or meritorious recognition for my service "Bea Righteous sees Satan just about anywhere and especially on those smartphones. There is no limit to how much damage Bea Righteous can invoke by way of her misguided do-gooder activities... a whirlwind of chaos surrounds our heroine... If this raises a chuckle, you are a definite candidate for the Church Lady Chronicles" --Victor R. Volkan, U.P. Book Review
