Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wood-Using Industries of Maryland After lumber leaves the sawmill it serves many useful purposes. Some of it passes through no additional process of manufacture but goes into buildings with only the cutting and fitting which carpenters give it. Another part is further manufactured before it is used. Wood-working machines of many kinds change its form, and it is cut and fitted by skilled labor, and the rough lumber is converted into finished products, such as boxes, frames, doors, sash, vehicles, boats, baskets, musical instruments, furniture, brushes, toys, handles, novel ties, and many more. This study has to do with that part of the lum her only which passes through further process of manufacture after it leaves the sawmill. Book Sawmill Waste in Maryland Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sawmill Waste in Maryland Classic Reprint written by Fred C. Simmons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sawmill "Waste" In Maryland In Southern and western States a number of sawmills have installed log debarkers. These remove the bark from the log before it is put on the carriage. According to all reports, sawmills generally find that this debarking pays. Saws need to be filed only one half to one third as often, and sawing is more accurate. The debarked slabs and edgings, of course, are readily salable as pulpwood. However, the most successful of these debarkers are large high-production units, costing or more. Generally a mill producing less than 20 or 30 thousand board feet a day cannot consider installing one. There are only two or three mills larger than this size in Maryland. Book Lumber Manufacture in the Douglas Fir Region Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lumber Manufacture in the Douglas Fir Region Classic Reprint written by H. B. Oakleaf and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lumber Manufacture in the Douglas Fir Region The purpose of this book is to present in convenient form data on the methods and costs of constructing and operating plants for the manufacture of lumber from Douglas fir in the region west of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon and Washington. Taken in connection with U.S. Department of Agriculture Bulletin No. 711, "Logging in the Douglas Fir Region," by William H. Gibbons, similar data is available on both the logging and manufacturing branches of the fir lumbering industry. The information is intended primarily for National Forest timber appraisers and other National Forest officers, for lumbermen not familiar with the manufacture of Douglas fir and for students of forestry; particular efforts have been made also to include information of value to mill architects and machinery manufacturers, as well as to the lumbermen themselves. The geographic limitations mentioned above should be kept in mind because most of the conclusions and figures are not applicable to lumber manufacture in other regions nor for other species of wood. This is to he understood in all cases whether or not it is specified that the text applies only to conditions at fir mills. The particular information of costs and other specific data subject to fluctuations with time are all as of 1916 and are published now because earlier presentation was prevented by the War. It is realized, of course, that these notes are neither flawless nor altogether complete; but they are the best available even now and furnish a reliable basis for estimates of complete operations. The variety of conditions at the many different sizes and types of mills have rendered it necessary to make the text and some of the tables directly applicable only to the average mill; so care and judgment must be used in modfying the data to meet a specific case. Most of the data is applicable to mills cutting more than 50,000 board feet of lumber per day. No attempt has been made to cover the small mills because they are relatively unimportant from the standpoint of the proportion of the product which they manufacture. Electric mills have been featured throughout because it is believed that information on mills of this character will be in greater demand as time goes on. In presenting the data an endeavor has been made to follow the natural course of the material through the various steps in the operation. Not tak ing account of frond or stem, but viewing the growth as a whole. Not only does the Forester think in large terms as to trees over a great area, but he uses the same large thoughts in respect to time. It is nothing to him to plant a forest growth a hundred years ahead of the time when it will be cut. While the farmer plans for a season and the orchardist for a decade, or a ten-year period, the Forester plans for a century or more. Book The Forests of Allegany County Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Forests of Allegany County Classic Reprint written by F. W. Besley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forests of Allegany County The forests of Allegany County are one of her chief assets Much the greater part of the area consists of rough mountain land upon which the growing of timber must continue to be the chief crop, and it is, there fore, of the greatest importance to the county to make these lands as productive as possible. This is further emphasized by the need of a good local supply of timber to carry on the present industries, and to aid in their further development. The extensive coal mines in the western part of the county require immense quantities of mine pr0ps, pit ties and mine rails; the railroads draw upon the forests for large quantities of cross ties the telephone and telegraph companies require thousands of poles annually; the saw mills and wood-using industries, with large amounts of capital invested and giving employment to hundreds of men, cannot be maintained without a cheap and abundant supply of timber. Not only is better forest management necessary for maintaining the supply of timber to foster the industries of the county, but the value of a well-regulated forest cover in the mountain watersheds for the control of stream flow is of almost equal value. A forest survey of Allegany County was made by the writer in 1908 to determine the extent, character and condition of the woodlands, with a view to suggesting methods of improvement. The main results of this survey are embodied in the following report, accompanied by a forest map which is attached to the back of the report.
