Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Women of the South in War Times As a contribution to American history, the following pages depict the life of the Southern people within the lines of the Confederacy during the four years of its storm-tossed existence. The greater part of the material is given in the words of those who were a part of the times in which they lived; but for the benefit of others who would now, or in days to come, have a clearer understanding of local happenings, editorial notes are added. These notes bear upon related events of larger historical import, and it should be stated that it is now being more and more generally recognized that the true history of any land or its leaders cannot properly be presented without entering into the life of the people that make the one and create the other. Too much of the experience of any individual or any group of individuals is apt to weary the reader; similarly, a series of disconnected incidents becomes both tiresome and confusing. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Southern Woman's War Time Reminiscences City, and I, with my two eldest children, ac companied him. It seems but yesterday that we strolled together through the old historic precincts of New York. I used to sit in Trinity churchyard for hours while my children played among the tombs, scratching the moss from the letters, and I wrote or studied, surrounded by the noise and clamor of trade, but as much alone as if in the heart of a forest. There, during the earlier part of our residence, I wrote my press letters and read. Later we moved up town, in the very heart of the city, where we were living when the events preceding the war begun to shape them selves into such ominous foreshadowings. Our summers were spent in the city, our winters in the South. In 1858 we had for our companion much of the time a most beautiful Boston girl, whose father had spent all his life in Mexico. He had come on to Boston and was carrying his daughter to Mexico to make a trade in a silver mine, she to be a part of the stock in trade, as wife of Don Josie Patillo, 59 years old. The whole party was stopping at our hotel. A gallant black-haired friend of ours fell desperately in love with her, and carried off this lily of loveliness right in the face of the swearing old pirate, her father, and Don Josie. The excitement over the matter in our hotel was about equal to two fires and a murder, and I was pounced upon for helping it on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Woman's Movement in the South I lived a while, during the war, in a camp of Confederate prisoners, as the wife of the com mander of the post, whose duty it was to open the letters that came to these men from their families and friends. As I looked at the photographs of women that came in these letters, I couldn't wonder that these men were ready to fight to the death under the powerful spell of those eloquent faces and flashing eyes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Southern Girl in '61: The War-Time Memories of a Confederate Senator's Daughter In the autumn my father was elected to the State Senate and we made preparations for our journey to Austin. There were no railroads across the State in those days, and the hundreds Of miles had to be traversed by private convey ance, or by stage coach. We decided to make the expedition in our Old fashioned family carriage, drawn by a pair Of stout horses and driven by our negro coachman, Henry. My brother came with us on horseback. We made the journey in easy stages - our luggage, Of course, being sent on by coach. We would drive about thirty miles a day - never more; stopping in the middle of the day for an hour or so, when the horses would be thoroughly rested and fed, and we would have our luncheon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Confederate Women of Arkansas in the Civil War, 1861-'65: Memorial Reminiscences, November 1907 The State Annual Reunion of the Arkansas United Confederate Veterans, held at Fort Smith, October 17-19, 1906 appointed, through the commander, Gen. X. T. Roberts, a committee of five veterans, J. H. Berry, V. Y. Cook, Charles Coffin, Dan W. Jones and J. M. Lucey, to arrange for the cooperation of the United Confederate Veterans of Arkansas and Sons of Veterans with the general committee of the United Confederates of the South for the erection of at least one monument in each of the Southern States to commemorate the heroism of the Southern women in the Civil war period. Started Five Years Ago. This monument movement came into prominence five years ago, when the fact began to dawn upon the minds of the old veterans and sons of veterans that the women of the South had borne a very conspicuous part in the glorious achievements of the Southern soldiery, so much so that had it not been for their superb nobility of character in cheerfully bidding what was often a last farewell to their loved ones and in working away the beauty and tenderness of Southern rearing in country and town to support their lonely families, the war could not have been sustained for any considerable length of time. But when this fact did finally dawn upon the minds of the old veteran they resolved to attest their appreciation of the greatness of the Southern women, who excelled the historic Roman matron and Spartan mother, by gathering and publishing the reminiscences of the work of the women of the South in the Civil war period and by erecting at least one monument in each Southern State to commemorate their heroism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman's Work in the Civil War: A Record of Heroism, Patriotism and Patience Meantime the war still continued, and the collisions between Grant and Lee, in the East, and Sherman and Johnston, in the South, the fierce campaign between Thomas and Hood in Tennessee, Sheridan's annihilating defeats of Early in the valley of the Shenandoah, and Wilson's magnificent expe dition in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, as well as the mixed naval and military victories at Mobile and Wilmington, were fruitful in wounds, sickness, and death. Never had the gentle and patient ministrations of woman been so needful as in the last year of the war; and never had they been so abundantly bestowed, and with such zeal and self-forgetfulness.
