Book Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows

Download or read book Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows written by Balli Kaur Jaswal and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club Pick A lively, sexy, and thought-provoking East-meets-West story about community, friendship, and women’s lives at all ages—a spicy and alluring mix of Together Tea and Calendar Girls. Every woman has a secret life . . . Nikki lives in cosmopolitan West London, where she tends bar at the local pub. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she’s spent most of her twenty-odd years distancing herself from the traditional Sikh community of her childhood, preferring a more independent (that is, Western) life. When her father’s death leaves the family financially strapped, Nikki, a law school dropout, impulsively takes a job teaching a "creative writing" course at the community center in the beating heart of London’s close-knit Punjabi community. Because of a miscommunication, the proper Sikh widows who show up are expecting to learn basic English literacy, not the art of short-story writing. When one of the widows finds a book of sexy stories in English and shares it with the class, Nikki realizes that beneath their white dupattas, her students have a wealth of fantasies and memories. Eager to liberate these modest women, she teaches them how to express their untold stories, unleashing creativity of the most unexpected—and exciting—kind. As more women are drawn to the class, Nikki warns her students to keep their work secret from the Brotherhood, a group of highly conservative young men who have appointed themselves the community’s "moral police." But when the widows’ gossip offers shocking insights into the death of a young wife—a modern woman like Nikki—and some of the class erotica is shared among friends, it sparks a scandal that threatens them all.

Book Faith Gender and Activism in the Punjab Conflict

Download or read book Faith Gender and Activism in the Punjab Conflict written by Mallika Kaur and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Punjab was the arena of one of the first major armed conflicts of post-colonial India. During its deadliest decade, as many as 250,000 people were killed. This book makes an urgent intervention in the history of the conflict, which to date has been characterized by a fixation on sensational violence—or ignored altogether. Mallika Kaur unearths the stories of three people who found themselves at the center of Punjab’s human rights movement: Baljit Kaur, who armed herself with a video camera to record essential evidence of the conflict; Justice Ajit Singh Bains, who became a beloved “people’s judge”; and Inderjit Singh Jaijee, who returned to Punjab to document abuses even as other elites were fleeing. Together, they are credited with saving countless lives. Braiding oral histories, personal snapshots, and primary documents recovered from at-risk archives, Kaur shows that when entire conflicts are marginalized, we miss essential stories: stories of faith, feminist action, and the power of citizen-activists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an enthralling new book with heart-rending, poignant and engrossing stories of immortal love, unfettered emotions and everlasting appeal that have stood the test of time… This volume comprises a collection of mystical stories from Punjab that forces the now ordinary and practical meaning of love to change into its illogical and irrational self it once used to be. An exposition of Sufi philosophy, each story possesses both the calm and the storm of true love – a love that consumes the body and the heart; a love that goes beyond all common sense; a love better known as junoon (intense passion), that finally culminates in ibaadat (worship) and the love of God. From Sohni-Mahiwal to Heer-Ranjha, Sassi-Punnu to Mirza-Sahiban, Harish Dhillon succinctly encapsulates the rich cultural and literary heritage Punjab is so famously synonymous with. Love Stories from Punjab brings alive the forgotten magic of folklore that will tug at all the right strings of the heart, once again. Drama, romance, tragedy and history are interwoven in the form of an exquisite tapestry.

Book Overcome and Become Portraits in Words of Five Heroic Punjabi Women

Download or read book Overcome and Become Portraits in Words of Five Heroic Punjabi Women written by Preet Inder Dhillon and published by White Falcon Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time, there were five little girls who believed in themselves and in the women they wanted to be. One fine day they stood gazing at the fragmented remains of their wings smashed by the patriarchal society. Calmly they observed the broken, blurry pieces that silently glittered on the ground. And yet they felt so proud of their reflections and shadows that smiled back at them. The society by all means could chop off their wings but their spirits were indomitable. And though these women with a spine of steel, at times could be broken, but could never be defeated. They rose unfettered, unbeaten, unimpeded. "Overcome And Become" is the story of those five resilient, remarkable extraordinary, gritty, daring (S)Heroes from Punjab. It's a saga of confidence, courage and compassion. It's a tribute and salute to the Daughters of Punjab - Surinder Kaur, Amrita Pritam, Dr. Kiran Bedi, Dr. Inderjit Kaur and last but not the least, Amrita Shergil. There is something these inspirational women all share in common: they are all warriors and continue to inspire us in our own modern lives. Preet has a magical flow in her writing, may it be the expression of fondness, regard or the pain of losing her subject. I was extremely touched by her superior usage of simple, effective and appropriate language. I am so sure that all readers when they go through this piece of art, they'll shower their blessings upon her. - DOLLY GULERIA As I finished reading "Overcome And Become" I feel nostalgic. I wanted to keep reading more and more about the gritty, phenomenal, inspiring women. Well done Preet!! Each word penned by you has come straight from your heart and reached where it should, deep within the hearts of the readers. In a surreal way again I feel you have wrapped all the women of Punjab in that beautiful dupatta I wore..... - DIVYA DUTTA (from the foreword)

Book Imagining Punjab Punjabi and Punjabiat in the Transnational Era

Download or read book Imagining Punjab Punjabi and Punjabiat in the Transnational Era written by Anjali Roy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book moves away from originary myths of region and identity that have dominated academic and mediatized representations of Punjab, a land-locked region divided between India and Pakistan after the Partition of 1947, and instead focuses on the role of the imagination in producing Punjab. It deconstructs Punjab as an ethno-spatial, ethno-linguistic and ethno-cultural construct produced by the communities who dwell there, those who have left it and those formed by new narratives of the region.By isolating imaginings of Punjab that are not centred on exclusivist regional, linguistic, sectarian or caste perspectives, contributions to this book propose the concept of free-flowing cartographies in relation to Punjab, which facilitate its imaginings as a geographical region, a social construct and a state of consciousness. The region is simultaneously imagined as a small place, a neighbourhood, a city, and a village, but also as a performative practice and a certain ways of doing things. Through focusing on a number of Punjabi spaces and communities and engaging with Punjab as a geographical region, social construct and state of consciousness, the papers in the book hope to contribute to broader debates on transnationalism, postnationalism, micronationalism, and new identity narratives emerging in the twenty first century. This book was originally published as a special issue of South Asian Diaspora.
