Book The Position of Women in Indian Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Position of Women in Indian Life Classic Reprint written by Maharani Chimnabai and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Position of Women in Indian Life Wondered whether I could do anything to awaken my Indian sisters from their lethargy of ages, to enable them to take their proper place in Indian public life. I therefore tried to learn what I could from the Western systems - British, Continental and American - which came under my observation, feeling strongly that I owed it to my sisters in India to give them the benefit of the impressions gathered during my travels on matters peculiarly affecting the position of women. Some of the experience thus gained I was anxious to lay before my countrywomen, with a view to receive opinions and contributions from all parts of India, and with the hope that some of the Western organizations might be adapted to the conditions of my native land. But here I met with a great difficulty, which at first appeared almost insuperable. It is one thing to be impressed with the position of women in Western public life and with their useful organizations, but it is quite another thing to be able to convey such impressions to others who have not been out of India at all. Not only accurate information, direct and collateral, was wanted, but it was necessary to edit such facts carefully and in good style, with a view to Indian requirements and with particular refer ence to the Hindu caste system. I therefore saw at once that I needed the co-operation of an able and well-informed literary man, who could handle the subject with Special knowledge ao. Download or read book Lighted to Lighten written by Alice B. van Doren and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lighted to Lighten: The Hope of India; A Study of Conditions Among Women in India What could a few foreign women do among those millions? But the great, silent revolution has begun. Eastern women are seeking self-determination as na tions seek it. They are asserting rights to soul and mind and body. They refuse to be chattels, and going out to release these millions come these little groups of Christian college girls who are to furnish leader ship. Have we no part? Yes, as allies we are needed as never before. Unless from the faculties of our colleges, as well as from our student volunteers, ade quate aid is sent at once these little groups may fail. This is your moral equivalent of war. To go and help them in this Day which is their Day of Decision requires vision, devotion, a glorious giving of life which will count just in proportion as the need is immediate, the battle in doubt, failure possible. Mis sion Boards must go haltingly for lack of women and of funds until groups of women from colleges in America hear the call of Christ and follow Him, for God Himself will not do this work alone. He has chosen that it shall be done through you. From our colleges and medical schools recruits and funds must be sent until those who are in the new colleges over there are trained and ready to win India for their Master. To bring them over here for training is not altogether good. There are dangers in this our age of jazz. It is not good to send out very young girls to a far country during the formative years lest a strange language and customs and a new civilization should unfit them to go back to their Main Street. Book India s Women Classic Reprint

Download or read book India s Women Classic Reprint written by Church Missionary Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India's Women Tell Me simply how proud thou art, how sensitive, egotistical, mean, and indolent; and ask Me to come and help thee in all the efforts thou makest against it. Poor child, do not blush; there are in heaven many saints who had thy faults; they prayed to Me, - and little by little their faults were corrected. Do not hesitate to ask Me for blessings for the body and mind, for health, memory, success. I can give all things, and I always give when blessings are needed to render souls more holy. To-day, what wilt thou have, My child? If thou knewest how I long to do thee good! Hast thou plans that occupy thee? Lay them all before Me. Do they concern thy vocation? What dost thou desire? Dost thou wish to give pleasure to thy mother, to thy family, to those on whom thou dost depend? What wouldst thou do for them? And for Me - hast thou no zealous thought for Me? Dost thou not wish to do a little good to the souls of thy friends whom thou lovest, and who have perhaps forgotten Me? Tell Me in whom thou art interested, what motives move thee, what means thou wouldst employ. Whom dost thou wish interested in thy work? I am Master of hearts, My child, and lead them where I will. I will bring round thee all who will be necessary to thee. Be tranquil. Bring Me all thy failures, and I will show thee the cause of them. Hast thou not troubles? Oh, my child, tell them all to Me fully. Who has caused thee pain? Tell Me all, and thou wilt finish by adding that thou wilt pardon, thou wilt forget; and I will bless thee. Dost thou dread something painful? Is there in thy heart a vain fear which is not reasonable, but which is tormenting? Trust thyself wholly to My care. I am here. I see everything. I will not leave thee. Are there those near thee who seem less kind to thee than they have been, and whose indifference and neglect separate thee from them, while thou canst see nothing in which thou hast wounded them? Pray earnestly to Me for them, and I will bring them back to thee, if they are needed for thy life's sanctification. Hast thou not joys to make known to Me? Why dost thou not let Me share thy happiness? Tell Me what has happened since yesterday to cheer and console thee. Was it an unexpected visit which did thee good? a fear suddenly dissipated? a success thou thoughtest thou shouldst not reach? a mark of affection, a letter, a gift, which thou hast received? a trial which left thee stronger than thou supposed? I have prepared it all for thee. Thou canst show thy gratitude and give Me thanks. Hast thou promises to make to Me? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Some Distinguished Indian Women IN her Introduction, Mrs. Chapman expresses some fear lest people in England should begin to weary of the subject of Indian women, so much having been written of late concerning them and their peculiar trials. But this little book needs no apology; and I, for one, have never read anything more interesting or more likely to be useful to the cause of female education in India than this small collection of biographies. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paper Read by Colonel Temple, on the Women of India, at the Royal Palace Hotel, Kensington, on March 8th, 1899 With your kind permission I must commence my task this evening with some preliminary information. There are, as you are so often glibly informed, some 300,000,000 people in India, and you may infer from such a statement, though this fact is not usually brought prominently to your notice, that so vast a population as this is most heterogeneous in its composition. It is to this heterogeneousness that I have to draw your special attention, because the chief characteristic of Indian domestic polity is extreme subdivision. The tendency among all classes of the natives of India is towards the social isolation of groups with contracted interests, and the consequent accentuation of minute differences in habits of life. The results of this are what is generally known as "caste," and "caste" is best denned as eating, drinking and smoking together, and intermarrying. Now, it is caste that underlies and controls all social matters that are peculiarly Indian. At first sight, therefore, in such circumstances, there can be no such thing as a common method of life among the women of a population, which is an ill-assorted compost of wild and savage tribes of diverse origin, of Brahmans and orthodox Hindus, of heterodox Hindus and non-Brahmanists by conviction and birth, of Buddhists and Jains and Parsis, of Muhammadans and Jews and Christians of very long standing, of Aryan and Dravidian races, of aboriginal clans of Aryan and non-Aryan descent, of highly cultivated communities and completely ignorant tribes, of whole peoples within and without the pale of Oriental civilisation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gems of India: Or, Sketches of Distinguished Hindoo and Mahomedan Women Ever since the Taj Mahal, that incomparable mausoleum of Mumtaz Mahal, the lovely and beloved queen of Shah Jahan, met my vision, a new interest in the women of India was kindled in my mind, and I resolved to make their past and present condition and capabilities matters of study and research as far as practicable; but, amid the manifold cares, labors, and illnesses incident to missionary life in the trying climate of India, I found but little opportunity to carry out my resolve. From time to time, however, when items of interest came in my way, I made memoranda, which, with the information given in authentic histories, and the traditions of the people, have enabled me to gather material for these sketches. It is always difficult to find reliable accounts of the characters of even distinguished persons after the lapse of busy centuries, and this is particularly the case in India on account of the national proclivity to indulge in the mythical and the marvelous. Several of the sketches are, therefore, unavoidably meager in details of personal characteristics, and the capabilities of the subjects are brought out mostly by historical incidents, which show their conduct under certain circumstances.
