Book excerpt: A sexy new contemporary standalone romance by New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Katy Evans. You've seen the headlines: Womanizing billionaire player! Watch out! Stay away! We were just two strangers. Facing a forbidden attraction, a chemical connection. Neither of us expected or wanted it to amount to more. But I had never been drawn to a guy the way I was drawn to this one: my brother's best friend, and CEO of the company where I interned. Even knowing I should stay away, I proved to be too human, after all. The chemistry was amazing. The laughs were incredible. I opened up to him in more ways than I'd opened up to anyone before. But sex was as far as I'd go. Just sex because he was too irresistible. Just sex because I wouldn't be falling for him. Just sex because I'd leave in three months, and I'd like for my brother not to kill me, and for nobody to find out he was my wicked little secret. He wasn't the One. He was just a womanizer. But for a time, he would be mine.

Book Gabriele d Annunzio

Download or read book Gabriele d Annunzio written by Lucy Hughes-Hallett and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Godfather to Mussolini, national hero of Italy and the WWI irredentist movement, literary icon of Joyce and Pound, lover of actress Eleonora Duse: here is Lucy Hughes-Hallett’s extraordinary biography of Gabriele d’Annunzio, poet, bon vivant, harbinger of Italian fascism. Gabriele d’Annunzio was Italy’s premier poet at a time when poetry mattered enough to trigger riots. A brilliant self-publicist in the first age of mass media, he used his fame to sell his work, seduce women, and promote his extreme nationalism. In 1915 d’Annunzio’s incendiary oratory helped drive Italy to enter the First World War, in which he achieved heroic status as an aviator. In 1919 he led a troop of mutineers into the Croatian port of Fiume and there a delinquent city-state. Futurists, anarchists, communists, and proto-fascists descended on the city. So did literati and thrill seekers, drug dealers, and prostitutes. After fifteen months an Italian gunship brought the regime to an end, but the adventure had its sequel: three years later, the fascists marched on Rome, belting out anthems they’d learned in Fiume, as Mussolini consciously modeled himself after the great poet. At once an aesthete and a militarist, d’Annunzio wrote with equal enthusiasm about Fortuny gowns and torpedoes, and enjoyed making love on beds strewn with rose petals as much as risking death as an aviator. Lucy Hughes-Hallett’s stunning biography vividly re-creates his flamboyant life and dramatic times, tracing the early twentieth century’s trajectory from Romantic idealism to world war and fascist aggression.

Max’s amorous adventures begin at the age of eight when the young Casanova finds himself running from the scene of his first crime, a surreptitious kiss on the couch with the neighbour’s daughter. For the next few decades women become participants in Max’s awkward and often hilarious journey to self-discovery -- some willing, some reluctant, some unwitting. We follow Max from the 50s to the 90s, through shifting sexual codes and practices, from Toronto to London and Paris, and, most importantly, from one woman to another. He is doomed to repeat this history until he learns from it. Book excerpt: Luther admired Peach because she had good looks, class and intelligence. Men couldn't keep their eyes off of her. Once Peach told her friends that no man has ever been able to resist her. "If he can resist me, he is not a real man," she bragged. Peach knocked on Luther's door. When he opened the door, he was taken aback by the glow of her skin, and her hair was a lot like his wife's. He missed his family. He was afraid he was going to be killed and not have a chance to tell them again how much he loved them. He was sorry for giving them such a hectic life filled with loneliness and sacrifice. Peach sensed his pain and fear. She reached out to touch him. They embraced, and Luther realized quick that he needed to let her go. Peach was gorgeous, entrancing, and he dug deep inside himself to resist the passion surging within him, but Peach leaned in more, amplifying the cleavage of her blouse for Luther to see. Luther tried to ignore the attention of beautiful, charming, well-dressed women who approached him regularly. They offered him congratulations. They flirted and requested to meet with him. They offered their help. His intent was to platonically enjoy and utilize their interests and support for community causes. Was that possible? Did he falter and engage in encounters that caused him to be labeled a 'womanizer'? The stories in this book encourage us to contemplate his legacy, his purpose, the women he may have met, the passion, attraction and the charisma he exemplified. He is easily a man who could have been a womanizer. Was he? The legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Junior (MLK) continues to evolve into something very different from what it was in the nineteen sixties and seventies. This book generates discussion about Dr. King's historical importance, his commitment to social justice, his books, speeches and letters, as well as his charm, charisma and alleged womanizing qualities.

Book Disputation Literature in the Near East and Beyond

Download or read book Disputation Literature in the Near East and Beyond written by Enrique Jiménez and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disputation literature is a type of text in which usually two non-human entities (such as trees, animals, drinks, or seasons) try to establish their superiority over each other by means of a series of speeches written in an elaborate, flowery register. As opposed to other dialogue literature, in disputation texts there is no serious matter at stake only the preeminence of one of the litigants over its rival. These light-hearted texts are known in virtually every culture that flourished in the Middle East from Antiquity to the present day, and they constitute one of the most enduring genres in world literature. The present volume collects over twenty contributions on disputation literature by a diverse group of world-renowned scholars. From ancient Sumer to modern-day Bahrain, from Egyptian to Neo-Aramaic, including Latin, French, Middle English, Armenian, Chinese and Japanese, the chapters of this book study the multiple avatars of this venerable text type.

Book excerpt: "One of the most remarkable books of contemporary Mexican literature, The Obstacles is the story of young writers coming of age in a world dominated entirely by their own fictions. It tells, in alternating chapters, the stories of two teenagers, Ricardo and Elias, who are characters in each others' novels. Ricardo lives in Mexico City with his mother, who is mourning the recent death of her husband. Elias, an orphan, lives in Las Remoras, a town on the Baja Peninsula that has been invented and meticulously imagined by Ricardo. Blurring our notions of reality and fiction, Eloy Urroz takes the reader into a world where characters invent characters and challenge their creators. And the book's conclusion--in which a surprising connection between Ricardo and Elias is revealed--shows that not even fiction can be controlled in a world of such incredible unpredictability."--Publisher's website.

Written in an engaging and accessible style, the contributors use techniques of language analysis, particularly from discourse analysis, cognitive linguistics and pragmatics, to explore the language of plays. The contributors demonstrate the validity of analysing the text of a play, as opposed to focusing on performance. Divided into four broad, yet interconnecting groups, the chapters: open up some of the basic mechanisms of conversation and show how they are used in dramatic dialogue look at how discourse analysis and pragmatic theories can be used to help us understand characterization in dialogue consider some of the cognitive patterns underlying dramatic discourse focus on the notion of speech as action there is also a chapter on how to analyse an extract from a play and write up an assignment

  • Author : Walter G. Andrews
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2005-01-13
  • ISBN : 0822385902

Download or read book The Age of Beloveds written by Walter G. Andrews and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-13 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Age of Beloveds offers a rich introduction to early modern Ottoman culture through a study of its beautiful lyric love poetry. At the same time, it suggests provocative cross-cultural parallels in the sociology and spirituality of love in Europe—from Istanbul to London—during the long sixteenth century. Walter G. Andrews and Mehmet Kalpakli provide a generous sampling of translations of Ottoman poems, many of which have never appeared in English, along with informative and inspired close readings. The authors explain that the flourishing of Ottoman power and culture during the “Turkish Renaissance” manifested itself, to some degree, as an “age of beloveds,” in which young men became the focal points for the desire and attention of powerful officeholders and artists as well as the inspiration for a rich literature of love. The authors show that the “age of beloveds” was not just an Ottoman, eastern European, or Islamic phenomenon. It extended into western Europe as well, pervading the cultures of Venice, Florence, Rome, and London during the same period. Andrews and Kalpakli contend that in an age dominated by absolute rulers and troubled by war, cultural change, and religious upheaval, the attachments of dependent courtiers and the longings of anxious commoners aroused an intense interest in love and the beloved. The Age of Beloveds reveals new commonalities in the cultural history of two worlds long seen as radically different.
