Book excerpt: Cynthia was just what Bill Masters wanted - at first. But her opulent charms proved a lot more accessible than her equally lush bank account, and after all she would be worth a hundred thousand dollars to him - dead. Besides, there was that pretty redhead, Sherry. And Donna, whom once he had loved and maybe he could love again . . . So Bill, who loved to hunt, set up his guns and his traps. Only this time the victim was human. Cynthia to be exact. Which would have worked out fine except that Sherry caught on. All those attractions of hers - the proud profile, the saucy hips, the slim, silky legs - they were prime bait. It was Bill who was snared now!

And some will be pilloried on social media by strident voices who otherwise advocate that we move away from industrial food production and eat locally-sourced, healthful food. They are women hunters. Virtually all attention these days is focused on the coming Antichrist—but he is only half the story. Many people are amazed to discover in Revelation 17 that there is also another mysterious character at the heart of prophecy—a woman who rides the beast. Who is this woman? Tradition says she is connected with the church of Rome. But isn’t such a view outdated? After all, today’s Vatican is eager to join hands with Protestants worldwide. “The Catholic church has changed” is what we hear. Or has it? In A Woman Rides the Beast, prophecy expert Dave Hunt sifts through biblical truth and global events to present a well-defined portrait of the woman and her powerful place in the Antichrist’s future empire. Eight remarkable clues in Revelation 17 and 18 prove the woman’s identity beyond any reasonable doubt. A provocative account of what the Bible tells us is to come.

Book excerpt: Over two million American women hunt. By taking up weapons for the explicit purpose of killing, they are shattering one of Western culture's oldest and most firmly entrenched taboos. The image of a woman 'armed and dangerous' is profoundly threatening to our collective psyche--and it is rejected by macho males and radical feminists alike. Woman the Hunter juxtaposes unsettlingly beautiful accounts of the author's own experiences hunting deer, antelope, and elk with an argument that builds on the work of thinkers from Aldo Leopold to Clarissa Pinkola Estes. Exploring how women and men relate to nature and violence, Mary Zeiss Stange demonstrates how false assumptions about women and about hunting permeate contemporary thought. Her book is a profound critique of our society's evasion of issues that make us uncomfortable, and it culminates in a surprising claim: that only by appreciating the value of hunting can we come to understand what it means to be human. Controversial and original, defying easy stereotypes,Woman the Hunter is sure to provoke strong reactions in almost every reader.

Book excerpt: What a Friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer. O, what peace we often forfeit O, what needless pain we bear-- All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer. --Joseph Scriven The man who wrote this famous 19th-century hymn was familiar with loneliness. He fought it all his life. It was after one bout with depression that he wrote the words to this song. What he had discovered was the reality of friendship with Jesus Christ. He knew that because Jesus lived upon earth as a man, He understands our feelings. He knows what it is like to be lonely. He suffered the pain of rejection and cruelty, and felt hunger and thirst. The Bible describes Him as "a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief" (Isaiah 53:3). Yet Jesus did more than sympathize with our troubles. He knew that the root of our problem is sin. The Bible says that "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God," and that "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 3:23; 6:23). But "He (God) hath made Him (Christ), who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus Christ, God the Son, died on the cross, and rose from the dead on the third day. God gives all those who know Jesus Christ as Savior the right to call God, Father (Romans 8:15). Christ has promised that He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He does not promise an easy life, but He gives us the privilege of taking "everything to God in prayer" and knowing that He hears, and will answer us (1 John 5:15). Through His Spirit He offers inner peace and strength. All that God requires is that you and I turn from our sins (repent) and receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus Christ, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9). To believe in Christ means you acknowledge that there is nothing you can do to be "good enough" to meet God's holy standard. Christ alone made the perfect sacrifice to put away your sin. Have you received Jesus Christ as your Savior? If not, you can right now. Tell God that you are sorry for your sins. Thank Him for sending His Son to die for you, and invite Him into your life.

Book Rwandan Women Rising

Download or read book Rwandan Women Rising written by Swanee Hunt and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1994, the tiny African nation of Rwanda was ripped apart by a genocide that left nearly a million dead. Neighbors attacked neighbors. Family members turned against their own. After the violence subsided, Rwanda's women—drawn by the necessity of protecting their families—carved out unlikely new roles for themselves as visionary pioneers creating stability and reconciliation in genocide's wake. Today, 64 percent of the seats in Rwanda's elected house of Parliament are held by women, a number unrivaled by any other nation. While news of the Rwandan genocide reached all corners of the globe, the nation's recovery and the key role of women are less well known. In Rwandan Women Rising, Swanee Hunt shares the stories of some seventy women—heralded activists and unsung heroes alike—who overcame unfathomable brutality, unrecoverable loss, and unending challenges to rebuild Rwandan society. Hunt, who has worked with women leaders in sixty countries for over two decades, points out that Rwandan women did not seek the limelight or set out to build a movement; rather, they organized around common problems such as health care, housing, and poverty to serve the greater good. Their victories were usually in groups and wide ranging, addressing issues such as rape, equality in marriage, female entrepreneurship, reproductive rights, education for girls, and mental health. These women's accomplishments provide important lessons for policy makers and activists who are working toward equality elsewhere in Africa and other postconflict societies. Their stories, told in their own words via interviews woven throughout the book, demonstrate that the best way to reduce suffering and to prevent and end conflicts is to elevate the status of women throughout the world.

Book Parachute Women

Download or read book Parachute Women written by Elizabeth Winder and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the true story of the four women who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help shape and curate the image of The Rolling Stones—perfect for fans of Girls Like Us. The Rolling Stones have long been considered one of the greatest rock-and-roll bands of all time. At the forefront of the British Invasion and heading up the counterculture movement of the 1960s, the Stones' innovative music and iconic performances defined a generation, and fifty years later, they're still performing to sold-out stadiums around the globe. Yet, as the saying goes, behind every great man is a greater woman, and behind these larger-than-life rockstars were four incredible women whose stories have yet to be fully unpacked . . . until now. In Parachute Women, Elizabeth Winder introduces us to the four women who inspired, styled, wrote for, remixed, and ultimately helped create the legend of the Rolling Stones. Marianne Faithfull, Marsha Hunt, Bianca Jagger, and Anita Pallenberg put the glimmer in the Glimmer Twins and taught a group of straight-laced boys to be bad. They opened the doors to subterranean art and alternative lifestyles, turned them on to Russian literature, occult practices, and LSD. They connected them to cutting edge directors and writers, won them roles in art house films that renewed their appeal. They often acted as unpaid stylists, providing provocative looks from their personal wardrobes. They remixed tracks for chart-topping albums, and sometimes even wrote the actual songs. More hip to the times than the rockers themselves, they consciously (and unconsciously) kept the band current—and confident—with that mythic lasting power they still have today. Lush in detail and insight, and long overdue, Parachute Women is a group portrait of the four audacious women who transformed the Stones into international stars, but who were themselves marginalized by the male-dominated rock world of the late '60s and early '70s. Written in the tradition of Sheila Weller's Girls Like Us, it's a story of lust and rivalries, friendships and betrayals, hope and degradation, and the birth of rock and roll.
