Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Witness of Jesus and Other Sermons The noblest and most enduring record which any man can leave behind him, when he has finished his earthly labors, is the influence which his life has made on other lives, which, transmitted from one generation to another, be comes a perpetual force for good while the world stands. While such a record is not traceable for human eyes in all its wide and subtle ramifications, it is none the less real and potent. A consecrated personality is the mightiest force for the uplifting of humanity which this world has ever known or can know. A good man is God's best gift to the world. Such a man cannot live and labor and suffer and die without putting into active operation good influences which, embodied in other lives, become permanent factors working for the world's redemption. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Witness of God and Faith: Two Lay Sermons After some hesitation the resolved to, use the opportunity to meet some of the religious difficulties which haunt the minds of men who are beginning the study of philosophy and the laws of historical evidence. He met these difficulties not merely by the state ment of a metaphysical position, but by enforcmg, with all the impressive energy of a non-sacerdotal teacher, the practical cha racter of the Christian life. The reader of these sermons, perplexed, perhaps, by ab stract argument, may not at once detect the buried life of spiritual passion which burns beneath, but those who heard the first sermon have never forgotten the power with which the speaker dealt in a few words with the common theme of sin and vice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Witness for Jesus: A Sermon Preached in Substance at St. Paul's Cathedral, at the Special Evening Service, on the Third Sunday After Easter, April 17, 1864 Jesus Christ our Lord defies this rule of human judgments, and the conscience of mankind justifies Him in defying it. He who could say to the men of His generation, Which of you convinceth: Me of sin? He who could dare to utter the tremendous words, I and the Father are One, could truly feel that it was im possible for Him to eclipse a higher greatness by drawing atten tion to Himself. His words were His own, His works were His own; as God He was the author and giver of the gifts which He received as man; and therefore He thought it not robbery to draw the eyes of men away from the miracles and words which flashed forth from Him, away from the sights and sounds which heralded a mighty presence, to Himself, the Worker, the Speaker, Who gave their greatness to the words which He spake, and to the works which He wrought. My brethren, the words of Jesus, which challenge witness, - attention, homage, reverence, love, to His personal Self, are only not intolerable because nothing less would have been adequate or true. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Testimony of the Four Gospels Concerning Jesus Christ IN the year 1871, Shortly after the beginning of the work of The Theistic Church in London, I preached seven Sermons entitled What think ye (f Christ? These were republished in the fifth volume of The Sling and the Stone. Although there is much in those Sermons which I could repeat sincerely to-day, there is also much in them which I could not repeat, because I know more than I did then, because my mind has been growing in strength and clearness, and because the critical and sentimental literature on the subject of Jesus Christ demands a fresh examination of the claims made by him or on his behalf. I have therefore instructed my literary executor not to republish those Sermons of 1871 without the most careful excision of those passages which I could not now honestly repeat. Book The Way Everlasting Sermons Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Way Everlasting Sermons Classic Reprint written by James Denney and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way Everlasting Sermons "O Lord, thou hast searched me and known me. - Psalm CXXXIX. I. I Once heard a well-known man, speaking of difficulties in the Bible, express himself between jest and earnest in this fashion: "The Gospels are a story, and a story may conceivably be untrue; the epistles are arguments, and arguments may conceivably be unsound; but the Psalms are the immediate reflection of personal experiences, and we can take them as they stand without asking any questions." Certainly that is true of the 139th Psalm, which even in the Psalter has an eminence of its own, and brings us into contact with elemental religion, with the soul's direct and overwhelming experience of God. None of us could have written it, but there is none of us in whom there is not an echo to its sublime and solemn utterance; and that echo is the spirit of God, bearing witness by and with His word in our hearts. The Psalm has four strophes, each of six verses; and in each of the four an essential aspect or element in the soul's experience of God absorbs the mind of the writer. It will repay us if in following his thought his experience in any degree becomes ours. I. First, he is overpowered by the experience of God's perfect knowledge of him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Witness of History to Christ: Five Sermons Preached Before the University of Cambridge, Being the Hulsean Lectures for the Year 1870 A Series of accidental circumstances has caused the publication of these Lectures to be long delayed, and renders it necessary to send them forth, even now, in a condition much less complete than I had originally intended and hoped. Among other things I had greatly wished to add, by way of Preface or Introduction, some further considerations upon the subjects with which the Lectures severally deal; but I am obliged to forego this intention. The Lectures were written while I was in a position which left me but little leisure for thought or study; but they are published amid the pressure of still more incessant occupations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primary Witness to the Truth of the Gospel: A Series of Discourses, Also a Charge on Modern the Canon of the Old Testament Having been prevented by the state of my health from taking my place in the pulpit during the past year, I am desirous of making the best amends I can by putting a course of sermons within reach of members of the Church in my own Diocese whom I might otherwise have addressed in person, and of any others who may care to peruse them. The following discourses, written at different times, and for different congregations, have been selected for the purpose because they appeared to admit of being linked together by a connecting chain - the chain of a common argument; and that argument one which, it is hoped, cannot fail to be interesting to readers of all classes, in proportion to its obvious and far-reaching importance.
