Book The Nation City

Download or read book The Nation City written by Rahm Emanuel and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time of anxiety about the effectiveness of our national government, Rahm Emanuel provides a clear vision, for both progressives and centrists, of how to get things done in America today--a bracing, optimistic vision of America's future from one of our most experienced and original political minds. In The Nation City, Rahm Emanuel, former two-term mayor of Chicago and White House Chief of Staff for President Barack Obama, offers a firsthand account of how cities, rather than the federal government, stand at the center of innovation and effective governance. Drawing on his own experiences in Chicago, and on his relationships with other mayors around America, Emanuel provides dozens of examples to show how cities are improving education, infrastructure, job conditions, and environmental policy at a local level. Emanuel argues that cities are the most ancient political institutions, dating back thousands of years and have reemerged as the nation-states of our time. He makes clear how mayors are accountable to their voters to a greater degree than any other elected officials and illuminates how progressives and centrists alike can best accomplish their goals by focusing their energies on local politics. The Nation City maps out a new, energizing, and hopeful way forward.

Book The Black Yearbook Portraits and Stories

Download or read book The Black Yearbook Portraits and Stories written by Adraint Khadafhi Bereal and published by 4 Color Books. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping exploration of the joys, hardships, and truths of Black students through intimate, honest dialogues and stunning photography, author of Heavy “A radical, reverential, and restorative document of community.”—Rebecca Bengal, author of Strange Hours: Photography, Memory, and the Lives of Artists When photographer Adraint Bereal graduated from the University of Texas, he self-published an impressive volume of portraits, personal statements, and interviews that explored UT's campus culture and offered an intimate look at the lives of Black students matriculating within a majority white space. Bereal's work was inspired by his first photo exhibition at the George Washington Carver Museum in Austin, entitled 1.7, that unearthed the experiences of the 925 Black men that made up just 1.7% of UT's total 52,000 student body. Now Bereal expands the scope of his original project and visits colleges nationwide, from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to predominantly white institutions to trade schools and more. Rather than dwelling on the monolith of trauma often associated with Black narratives, Bereal is dedicated to using honest dialogue to share stories of true joy and triumph amidst the hardships, prejudices, and internal struggles. Using an exciting and eclectic design approach to accompany the portraits and stories, each individual profile effectively conveys the interviewee's unique voice, tone, and background. The Black Yearbook reframes society's stereotypical perception of higher education by representing and celebrating the wide range of Black experiences on campuses.

Book The Hidden History of Coined Words

Download or read book The Hidden History of Coined Words written by Ralph Keyes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How do words get coined? That question is explored in Ralph Keyes's latest book, The Hidden History of Coined Words. Based on meticulous research, Keyes has determined that successful neologisms are as likely to be created by chance as by intention. A remarkable number of new words were coined whimsically, he's discovered, to taunt, even to prank. Knickers resulted from a hoax, big bang from an insult. Wisecracking produced software, crowdsource, and blog. More than a few neologisms weren't even coined intentionally: they resulted from happy accidents such as typos, mistranslations, and misheard words like bigly and buttonhole, or from an unintended coinage such as Isaac Asimov's robotics. Many of the word coiners Keyes writes about come from unlikely quarters. Neologizers (a Thomas Jefferson coinage) include not just learned scholars and literary lions but cartoonists, columnists, children's authors, and children as well. Wimp, Keyes tells us, originated with an early 20th century book series on The Wymps, goop from a series about The Goops, and nerd from a book by Dr. Seuss. Competing claims to have coined terms like gonzo, mojo, and booty call are assessed, as is epic battles fought between new word partisans, and those who think we have enough words already. A concluding chapter offers pointers on how to coin a word of one's own. Written in a reader-friendly manner, The Hidden History of Coined Words will appeal not just to word lovers but history buffs, trivia contesters, and anyone at all who is interested in a well-informed good read"--

Book Highly Irregular

Download or read book Highly Irregular written by Arika Okrent and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-03 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maybe you've been speaking English all your life, or maybe you learned it later on. But whether you use it just well enough to get your daily business done, or you're an expert with a red pen who never omits a comma or misplaces a modifier, you must have noticed that there are some things about this language that are just weird. Perhaps you're reading a book and stop to puzzle over absurd spelling rules (Why are there so many ways to say '-gh'?), or you hear someone talking and get stuck on an expression (Why do we say "How dare you" but not "How try you"?), or your kid quizzes you on homework (Why is it "eleven and twelve" instead of "oneteen and twoteen"?). Suddenly you ask yourself, "Wait, why do we do it this way?" You think about it, try to explain it, and keep running into walls. It doesn't conform to logic. It doesn't work the way you'd expect it to. There doesn't seem to be any rule at all. There might not be a logical explanation, but there will be an explanation, and this book is here to help. In Highly Irregular, Arika Okrent answers these questions and many more. Along the way she tells the story of the many influences--from invading French armies to stubborn Flemish printers--that made our language the way it is today. Both an entertaining send-up of linguistic oddities and a deeply researched history of English, Highly Irregular is essential reading for anyone who has paused to wonder about our marvelous mess of a language.

Book Let s Stop Calling it an Achievement Gap

Download or read book Let s Stop Calling it an Achievement Gap written by Autumn A. Arnett and published by IAP. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1980 and 2005, 45 states were involved in lawsuits around equity of funding and adequacy of education provided to all students in the state. Indeed, this investigation could have included any cities in America, and the themes likely would have been the same: Lower funding and resources, disproportionate numbers of teachers and school leaders who do not look like the students they serve, debates over the public’s responsibility to provide fair and equitable education for all students in the jurisdiction, implicit biases from the top to the bottom and a resegregation of schools in America. Integration for Black families was never about an idea that Black students were better off if they could be around White students, it was about the idea that Black students would be better off if they could have access to the same education that White students had — but residential segregation still enables de facto school segregation, when it isn’t coded into policy. For the overwhelming majority of Black students, they’re stuck in segregated, underperforming schools. Schools where the teachers are dedicated to the mission, but where the cities and districts and states have failed to uphold their basic responsibility to maintain the upkeep of the schools and provide enough desks for each child and current textbooks.

Download or read book ServiceNow Development Handbook Third Edition written by Tim Woodruff and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-08-11 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ServiceNow is a powerful ITSM (IT Service Management) software solution with a massively configurable back-end. One of the greatest benefits of ServiceNow is that it lets you do just about anything you could want to do, to suit the needs of your business. On that same note, one of the most dangerous things about ServiceNow, is that it lets you do just about anything! With such freedom and capacity for customization, comes risk, but that risk is not without great reward, which you can realize with a strong understanding of best-practice. Description The goal of this book is to explore the pitfalls, standards, and best-practices that most ServiceNow ITSM developers either learn the hard way, or never learn at all. These are the things that every developer wishes they knew from day one, and which - once learned - will make you a more effective and efficient developer. This book will teach you how to avoid pitfalls, and empower you with knowledge that will allow you to build much more robust, resilient, powerful, and efficient solutions within the platform. Having an understanding of why a given standard is what it is (and why it's important), will not only make you more likely to adhere to it, but will empower you to apply the logic and underlying concepts behind those standards to other areas of the platform and development. It'll make you a more effective administrator, developer, or architect. That's that spirit in which this compendium was written: Teaching and explaining, not simply listing out a series of arcane edicts under the heading of "best-practice". The ServiceNow Development handbook will serve to boost your knowledge, your confidence, and your career. What to expect The ServiceNow Development Handbook covers a wide range of topics including (but not limited to): Coding guidelines Writing DRY code Pass-by-reference Controlling fields in the client AJAX and asynchronicity When not to code Debugging Naming conventions List and form design Testing Execution paths Impersonation Handling Errors Code documentation Update sets Batching and merging What is (and isn't) tracked Tracking scoped records Performance Query efficiency Nested queries Service portal Widgets and option schema Portal coding best-practices Security Who this book is for Administrators and developers at any level of their ITSM development career would find the information in this handbook useful. However, this is a condensed "developer guide", and not a complete ServiceNow training course. If you are just starting out your ServiceNow development career, consider reading the more beginner-friendly "Learning ServiceNow, Second Edition" (ISBN-13: 978-1788837040) first. You can find Learning ServiceNow at http://lsn.snc.guru/ Note: This book's contents may be updated slightly over time, as new information becomes available. Book excerpt: Brave, clear-eyed, and passionate, Stakes Is High is the book we need to guide us past crisis mode and through an uncertain future. The events of the past decade have forced us to reckon with who we are and who we want to be. We have been invested in a set of beliefs about our American identity: our exceptionalism, the inevitable rightness of our path, the promise that hard work and determination will carry us to freedom. But in Stakes Is High, Mychal Denzel Smith confronts the shortcomings of these stories -- and with the American Dream itself -- and calls on us to live up to the principles we profess but fail to realize. In a series of incisive essays, Smith exposes the stark contradictions at the heart of American life, holding all of us, individually and as a nation, to account. We've gotten used to looking away, but the fissures and casual violence of institutional oppression are ever-present. There is a future that is not as grim as our past. In this profound work, Smith helps us envision it with care, honesty, and imagination.
