Book excerpt: The Wise Woman: A Parable (1875) (Published also as "The Lost Princess: A Double Story"; or as "A Double Story.")The Lost Princess: A Double Story, first published in 1875 as The Wise Woman: A Parable, is a fairy tale novel by George MacDonald. The story describes how a woman of mysterious powers pays visits to two very different young girls: one a princess, the other a shepherd's daughter. It has been regarded as ahead of its time in its approach to parenting. George MacDonald (10 December 1824 - 18 September 1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle.C. S. Lewis wrote that he regarded MacDonald as his "master" "Picking up a copy of Phantastes one day at a train-station bookstall, I began to read. A few hours later," said Lewis, "I knew that I had crossed a great frontier." G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had "made a difference to my whole existence." Elizabeth Yates wrote of Sir Gibbie, "It moved me the way books did when, as a child, the great gates of literature began to open and first encounters with noble thoughts and utterances were unspeakably thrilling." Even Mark Twain, who initially disliked MacDonald, became friends with him, and there is some evidence that Twain was influenced by MacDonald.Christian author Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) wrote in Christian Disciplines, vol. 1, (pub. 1934) that "it is a striking indication of the trend and shallowness of the modern reading public that George MacDonald's books have been so neglected." In addition to his fairy tales, MacDonald wrote several works on Christian apologetics including several that defended his view of Christian Universalism.......

Book The Wise Woman

    Book Details:
  • Author : George MacDonald
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2014-12-15
  • ISBN : 9781507526828
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book The Wise Woman written by George MacDonald and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a newly printed second edition of George MacDonald's classic, The Wise Woman. There are two girls: one a princess and the other a daughter of humble shepherds. Both girls have been terribly spoiled and are quite conceited, but in completely different ways. Their self-destructive pride is challenged by the mysterious Wise Woman who takes them on adventures and exposes them to various trials in order to help the two girls know themselves more deeply. But will it work? As many people have reflected, this book is a bit like a mirror. MacDonald, through the two young girls in this story, beautifully bears our hearts on these pages. The truth is that we cannot find the Kingdom of God within us (Luke 17:21) if we are unwilling to fight the dragons, traverse through the dark realms, and slay the poisonous beasts in our hearts that have aided in "nurturing" our dismal condition. A note about this edition: All Gracebeard Publishing books that are taken from a public domain work are proofread in their entirety to fix formatting/spelling issues. The purpose is to present a text as close to the original as possible. This is the second edition prepared in July 2017. Please noteThere are numerous sellers who publish this title and the "featured" publisher changes from time to time. Many of the negative reviews you see are for other sloppily published editions. The Gracebeard Publishing edition was compared to the original 1875 edition of this book for formatting and textual accuracy.

Thought-provoking and inspirational, Parable of the Brown Girl is a powerful example of how God uses the narratives we most often ignore to teach us the most important lessons in life. It's time to pay attention.

Book excerpt: Before rebuilding, you must have good blueprints. Your blueprints must be His Word, which you will find in this book-always read the Scriptures, never skip them. Next, you must find the Cornerstone that everything will be built on. Our Cornerstone is taking Jesus as your Lord, not just your Savior, then to go beyond joy as you become His beautiful bride. With a renewed mind, the Lord's blueprint, and Him by your side, you will then be able to rebuild your life instead of foolishly building it on sinking sand. Those of you who are sitting amidst rubble because your house has fallen (through infidelity or divorce) really have the advantage. You are motivated to begin to rebuild your life. This is where I was when I first began writing the book for women. It was painful for me, but it was worth every tear I ever cried!
