Book excerpt: A RUSA 2007 Outstanding Reference Title The Qur'an is the source of inspiration for one of the world's major religions, followed today by over a billion people. It plays a central role in Islam and ever since it appeared fourteen hundred years ago has been the subject of intense debate. Some of this has been carried out by Muslims and some by those hostile or indifferent to Islam, producing a very wide range of views. Authored by forty-three international experts, the objective of The Qur'an: An Encyclopedia is to present this diversity of thought, approach and school without priority, in order to give a strong appreciation of the range of response that the text has provoked throughout its history and providing students and researchers with a powerful one-volume resource covering all aspects of the text and its reception. Islam and the Qur'an are much in the news today and there is a public debate going on in which things are said about the Qur'an without much knowledge or understanding of the book. Every effort has been made to help the reader use the Encyclopedia as an investigative tool in Quranic studies. The volume assumes no previous knowledge of the Qur'an, Islam or Arabic. Technical terms are explained in the text itself and the style of each entry is designed to be as self-contained as possible. Entries are cross-referenced and many include a brief bibliography. At the end of the work there is a substantial annotated bibliography providing a detailed guide to the most significant books, journals and articles in Qur'anic Studies. There is a full index. The readership will include those seeking basic information on the Qur'an, however the substantial number of longer entries means that it will also be used by specialists.

Book The Qur an A Verse Translation

Download or read book The Qur an A Verse Translation written by M.A.R. Habib and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam’s founding text, rendered for the first time in flowing English verse. This monumental feat of translation, the product of a ten-year-long collaboration between one of our most respected scholars of Islam (Bruce B. Lawrence) and a poet and scholar of literature (M. A. R. Habib), The Qur'an: A Verse Translation offers readers the first rendering in English to echo, in accessible and fluent verse, the sonorous beauty of the Arabic original as well as the complex nuances of its meaning. Those familiar with the Qur'an in Arabic—especially the faithful who each day hear the text recited aloud—know that it is a sublime blend of sound and sense, music and meaning. While no translation can perfectly capture the inimitable virtues of the original, Habib and Lawrence have come closest to a readable, clear, and fluid English Qur'an that all readers, regardless of their faith or familiarity with the text, can read with pleasure, gaining a deeper appreciation of the book and the religious tradition it inspired. A rich and informative introduction situates the Qur'an in its cultural context and describes its unique structure and history. A note from the translators explains their painstaking efforts to address the many challenges that any translator must face when rendering the Qur'an into English. Extensive notes and explanatory apparatus will help all readers—whether they are familiar with the original or coming to the text for the first time—to read (and hear) the Qur'an with fresh understanding and insight.

Download or read book The Holy Qur an written by Jonathan K. Crockett and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2004-06-02 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many books that attempt to show the similarities between Islamic beliefs and Christian beliefs. While this book does accomplish that, it takes a step further, using the verses of the Quran to show more than just similarity of beliefs. It shows that Muslims believe in Jesus and, according to their scriptures, believe in following Christ. It shows that they believe the Christian churches of the time were following apostate beliefs. The people of Islam were awaiting the restoration of all Truths as taught by all prophets including Jesus Christ. There are many who do not realize the sheer number of references to Christ that exist in the Quran. Nor do many realize the teachings about the council in heaven, the creation, the occurrences in the Garden of Eden, the need for prophets, the miraculous conception of Jesus, Jesus restoration of the true religion, miracles performed by him, his resurrection and ascension, the apostasy; the prophecies of other chosen people and scriptures, another restoration and more prophets yet to come as taught in the verses of the Quran. This work should be, if not intriguing, at least enlightening for every reader no matter what their religious background or beliefs. Some alternate spellings for Quran are koran and quran.

Book excerpt: Many scholars see democracy and Islam as incompatible. However, history has shown that Muslims were the pioneers of a democratic system 1400 years ago. This book illustrates the fact that Muslim nations can establish a democratic political system based upon Islamic teachings and principles. Democracy must be a homegrown political system that meets not only the political demands of a nation, but also the cultural demands. In order for a democracy to work in the nation it is being presented, it must align with the people’s values and culture; simply being a worldwide political system is not enough. The time has come for Muslim nations to adopt a system that meets the demands of Muslims and non-Muslims alike for the sake of peace and justice for all. This is the theme of Islamic democracy that this book is attempting to portray for the Middle East.

If his/her understanding was different than what the Qur'anic verses were stating, we kept on rewording the translation until those verses were understood properly. It was tremendous patience on part of the participants. May Allah reward them all. (2) Simplicity: In this translation Simple Language and Direct Approach is used for appealing to the common sense of scholars and common people. • Author : Robert Spencer
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2022-05-03
  • ISBN : 1642939501

Download or read book The Critical Qur an written by Robert Spencer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 1271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique resource for understanding the Islamic Holy Book. As Islamic terrorism becomes a distressingly common feature of life in North America and Europe, it has become increasingly important for non-Muslims to be aware of the ideology that animates and motivates jihad violence and Sharia oppression of women and others—an ideology that’s rooted in Islam’s holy book, the Qur’an. English-speaking people, however, have found attempts to understand the Qur’an and Islam impeded by unclear, densely worded translations and explanatory notes written by Islamic apologists attempting to conceal, rather than reveal, how Islamic jihadis use the texts and teachings of the Qur’an to justify violence and supremacism, and to make recruits of peaceful Muslims. The Critical Qur’an, in contrast, makes clear the passages that are used to incite violence. Historian and Islamic scholar Robert Spencer elucidates the Qur’anic text with extensive references to the principal tafsir, or commentaries, that mainstream Muslims use today to understand the Qur’an, showing how interpretations that sanction violence are unfortunately not outliers, but central in Islamic theology. The Critical Qur’an is the Islamic counterpart to numerous critical and skeptical editions of the Bible that have appeared over the last century and more. It is the one edition of Islam’s book that doesn’t shy away from elucidating why the holy book of Islam is so frequently quoted and referred to with reverence by people who commit and/or justify acts of violence. It is a basic resource for everyone who wishes to understand the persistent phenomenon of Islamic terrorism, and the peculiar provenance of this most provocative book.

Book Opening the Qur an

  • ISBN : 0268096546

Download or read book Opening the Qur an written by Walter H. Wagner and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2010-07-02 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opening the Qur'an can be a bewildering experience to non-Muslim, English-speaking readers. Those who expect historical narratives, stories, or essays on morals are perplexed once they pass the beautiful first Surah, often shocked and then bogged down by Surah 2, and even offended by Surah 3’s strictures against nonbelievers. Walter H. Wagner “opens” the Qur’an by offering a comprehensive and extraordinarily readable, step-by-step introduction to the text, making it accessible to students, teachers, clergy, and general readers interested in Islam and Islam’s holy Book. Wagner first places the prophet Muhammad, the Qur'an, and the early Muslim community in their historical, geographical, and theological contexts. This background is a basis for interpreting the Qur'an and understanding its role in later Muslim developments as well as for relationships between Muslims, Jews, and Christians. He then looks in detail at specific passages, moving from cherished devotional texts to increasingly difficult and provocative subjects. The selected bibliography serves as a resource for further reading and study. Woven into the discussion are references to Islamic beliefs and practices. Wagner shows great sensitivity toward the risks and opportunities for non-Muslims who attempt to interpret the Qur'an, and sympathy in the long struggle to build bridges of mutual trust and honest appreciation between Muslims and non-Muslims.
