Book Philosophy for Life and Other Dangerous Situations

Download or read book Philosophy for Life and Other Dangerous Situations written by Jules Evans and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When philosophy rescued him from an emotional crisis, Jules Evans became fascinated by how ideas invented over two thousand years ago can help us today. He interviewed soldiers, psychologists, gangsters, astronauts, and anarchists and discovered the ways that people are using philosophy now to build better lives. Ancient philosophy has inspired modern communities — Socratic cafés, Stoic armies, Epicurean communes — and even whole nations in the quest for the good life. This book is an invitation to a dream school with a rowdy faculty that includes twelve of the greatest philosophers from the ancient world, sharing their lessons on happiness, resilience, and much more. Lively and inspiring, this is philosophy for the street, for the workplace, for the battlefield, for love, for life.

Book excerpt: The inner world of the imagination, with its own unique events and cast of characters, is active in most people, but many lose touch with it in their absorption with external life. Pieter Middlekoop shows how this dreamlike inner world can be entered deliberately while awake in order to gain self-knowledge and resolve conflicts. The book presents accounts of several people who entered the imaginal world by means of a technique called Imagination Therapy, which Middlekoop developed as a variation of C. G. Jung's Active Imagination. In a series of "imaginations," they encounter their joys and sorrows, their anxieties, their problems with relationships—and also the keys to solving their difficulties. During the course of therapy it becomes clear that there is an active center within the personality that communicates to the conscious self in the symbolic language of imagery. Often personified in fantasies and dreams as the archetypal Wise Old Man, this inner source of wisdom guides the individual to healing and wholeness.

Book Lead with a Story

Download or read book Lead with a Story written by Paul Smith and published by AMACOM Div American Mgmt Assn. This book was released on 2012 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storytelling has come of age in the business world. Today, many of the most successful companies use storytelling as a leadership tool. At Nike, all senior executives are designated "corporate storytellers." 3M banned bullet points years ago and replaced them with a process of writing "strategic narratives." Procter Gamble hired Hollywood directors to teach its executives storytelling techniques. Some forward-thinking business schools have even added storytelling courses to their management curriculum. The reason for this is simple: Stories have the ability to engage an audience the way logic and bullet points alone never could. Whether you are trying to communicate a vision, sell an idea, or inspire commitment, storytelling is a powerful business tool that can mean the difference between mediocre results and phenomenal success. Lead with a Story contains both ready-to-use stories and how-to guidance for readers looking to craft their own. Designed for a wide variety of business challenges, the book shows how narrative can help: * Define culture and values * Engender creativity and innovation * Foster collaboration and build relationships * Provide coaching and feedback * Lead change * And more Whether in a speech or a memo, communicated to one person or a thousand, storytelling is an essential skill for success. Complete with examples from companies like Kellogg's, Merrill-Lynch, Procter Gamble, National Car Rental, Wal-Mart, Pizza Hut, and more, this practical resource gives readers the guidance they need to deliver stories to stunning effect.

You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view—a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, an escalating rivalry with a powerful member of the nobility forces Kvothe to leave the University and seek his fortune abroad. Adrift, penniless, and alone, he travels to Vintas, where he quickly becomes entangled in the politics of courtly society. While attempting to curry favor with a powerful noble, Kvothe uncovers an assassination attempt, comes into conflict with a rival arcanist, and leads a group of mercenaries into the wild, in an attempt to solve the mystery of who (or what) is waylaying travelers on the King's Road. All the while, Kvothe searches for answers, attempting to uncover the truth about the mysterious Amyr, the Chandrian, and the death of his parents. In The Wise Man's Fear, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far away, towards the Far East, the sun tree could be found, a huge tree, bigger than any tree imaginable. A whole palace was perched in its highest branches and the inhabitant of this palace was none other than the wisest man in the world. However, even though he had more knowledge than anyone else, he had a question that still troubled him, just as it troubles kings and all men: what happens to a man when the angel of death comes for him? Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author, poet and artist. Celebrated for children’s literature, his most cherished fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl". His books have been translated into every living language, and today there is no child or adult that has not met Andersen's whimsical characters. His fairy tales have been adapted to stage and screen countless times, most notably by Disney with the animated films "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and "Frozen", which is loosely based on "The Snow Queen", in 2013. Thanks to Andersen's contribution to children's literature, his birth date, April 2, is celebrated as International Children's Book Day.

Book Jung s Seminar on Nietzsche s Zarathustra

Download or read book Jung s Seminar on Nietzsche s Zarathustra written by James L. Jarrett and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nietzsche's infamous work Thus Spake Zarathustra is filled with a strange sense of religiosity that seems to run counter to the philosopher's usual polemics against religious faith. For some scholars, this book marks little but a mental decline in the great philosopher; for C. G. Jung, Zarathustra was an invaluable demonstration of the unconscious at work, one that illuminated both Nietzsche's psychology and spirituality and that of the modern world in general. The original two-volume edition of Jung's lively seminar on Nietzsche's Zarathustra has been an important source for specialists in depth psychology. This new abridged paperback edition allows interested readers to participate with Jung as he probes the underlying meaning of Nietzsche's great work.

Download or read book The Wise Elder written by Barry Kern Weinhold Ph D and published by Cicrcl Press. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the difference between a wise elder and an old man?" My definition of a wise elder is someone who lives an authentic life, shows up and knows what they want and how to get it. They are wise because they have been able to connect the dots in their lives and learn from all their life experiences. They are self-aware and able to self-correct. They also have spent some quality time considering their mortality.By contrast, an old man is basically just waiting to die. They are not very self-aware and most of what they do is try to stay in their comfort zone. They do not like change or uncertainty. They silently worry about their future and often worry about their children and other loved ones. Henry David Thoreau summed up this group of old men in his famous quote, "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation."Currently, we have way too many "old men" and too few wise elders. That is the main purpose why I am writing this book. I want to inspire old men to become wise elders and I want to challenge our society to reach out to our elderly men and do things with them that help them develop their wise elder archetype and cast aside their old man archetype. I also believe that men have to take charge of their lives and create more purposeful activities in their twilight years. They can't just wait for society to change and instead they have to help it change. This book contains the wisdom of 18 contributors from the U. S. and Germany. These men share the wisdom they wish they had gotten when they were young. They also share stories of how they have mentored young men and women and what they, as wise elders, want in their life. This book is alive and full of stories and some humorous anecdotes. There is something for everyone young and old in this book. One of the contributors to the book, Rafa Flores, says this about being a wise elder, "As an elder, advocate, mentor, teacher, example, we as adults with life lessons and wisdom to share, must be proactive. If the mountain won't come to you, YOU must go to the mountain. We as self-aware conscious beings (wise elders), must go to where the kids are. It is only then that they will have access to us, and we to them. This requires awareness of the need and also the effort on our part to make ourselves available. This will truly transform the lives of elders and young people."This book is the 3rd book of a series of four books titled "The Real Men Series." The other two books are "The Male Mother: The Missing Skill Set For Fathers" and "The Servant Leader: What The World Needs Now." The fourth book, tentatively titled, "The Open-Hearted- Lover: Love Is All You Need."Barry K.Weinhold, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, CO and a licensed psychologist since 1976. He is the author or co-author of 65 books. He also co-directs the Colorado Institute For Conflict Resolution and Creative Leadership in Colorado Springs. Download or read book The Terrible Old Man written by H. P. Lovecraft and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first story set in the fishing village of Kingsport, which is featured in the later works of the one of the greatest horror writers of all time. It is rumored that the mysterious old man who lives alone in the small New England town was once a sea captain. It is also rumored that he is hoarding a treasure. When three robbers decide to steal it, they will encounter a bloodthirsty evil unlike any they ever imagined . . . “The Terrible Old Man is the story of three career criminals looking to rob the eponymous character, an eccentric retired mariner so ancient that no one alive remembers his youth. . . . This is also the first story set in the fictional New England geography that Lovecraft will detail over the course of future writing. . . . So, what we see in these stories is Lovecraft beginning to construct the alternate world which will be the home to his most famous works, at least as much a unifying element of the author’s oeuvre as those details subsequent writers and critics have defined as the ‘Cthulhu Mythos.’ As such, The Terrible Old Man is not only an effective piece of eerie storytelling, it is also an important stepping stone in the development of a bigger Lovecraftian world.” —The Blood-Shed “A piece of minimalist brushwork, with most of the narrative suggested by negative space . . . In sharp contrast to the central Mythos tales, the horror is allusive and oblique, the violence kept off-stage.” —Tor.com
