Book Bill Duke

Download or read book Bill Duke written by Bill Duke and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many film fans may not be familiar with Bill Duke’s name, they most certainly recognize his face. Dating back to the 1970s, Duke has appeared in a number of popular films, including Car Wash, American Gigolo, Commando, Predator, and X-Men: The Last Stand. Fewer still might be aware of Duke’s extraordinary accomplishments off-screen—as a talented director, producer, entrepreneur, and humanitarian. Bill Duke: My 40-Year Career on Screen and behind the Camera is the memoir of a Hollywood original. In an industry that rarely embraces artists of color, Duke first achieved success as an actor then turned to directing. After helming episodes of ratings giants Dallas, Falcon Crest, Hill Street Blues, and Miami Vice, Duke progressed to feature films like A Rage in Harlem, Deep Cover, Hoodlum, and Sister Act 2. In this candid autobiography, Duke recalls the loving but stern presence of his mother and father, acting mentors like Olympia Dukakis, and the pitfalls that nearly derailed his career, notably an addiction to drugs. Along the way, readers will encounter familiar names like Danny Glover, Laurence Fishburne, Forest Whitaker, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Whoopi Goldberg. From his Broadway debut in 1971 to the establishment of the Duke Media Foundation, which trains and mentors young filmmakers, Duke has been breaking the rules of what it means to triumph in the entertainment industry. Recalling pivotal moments in his life, Bill Duke: My 40-Year Career on Screen and behind the Camera is the story only Bill Duke could tell.

How would her family pay their bills? What would the future hold? If only God would somehow let them know that everything was going to be all right . . . and then Flash the donkey showed up. If there is ever a good time to discover a wounded, frightened, bedraggled donkey standing in your driveway, this wasn’t it. The local sheriff dismissed Flash as “worthless.” But Rachel didn’t believe that, and she couldn’t turn him away. She brought Flash into her struggling family during their darkest hour—and he turned out to be the very thing they needed most. Flash is the true story of their adventures together in learning to love and trust; breaking down whatever fences stood in their way; and finding the strength, confidence, and faith to carry on. Book These Truths A History of the United States

Download or read book These Truths A History of the United States written by Jill Lepore and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Nothing short of a masterpiece.” —NPR Books A New York Times Bestseller and a Washington Post Notable Book of the Year In the most ambitious one-volume American history in decades, award-winning historian Jill Lepore offers a magisterial account of the origins and rise of a divided nation. Widely hailed for its “sweeping, sobering account of the American past” (New York Times Book Review), Jill Lepore’s one-volume history of America places truth itself—a devotion to facts, proof, and evidence—at the center of the nation’s history. The American experiment rests on three ideas—“these truths,” Jefferson called them—political equality, natural rights, and the sovereignty of the people. But has the nation, and democracy itself, delivered on that promise? These Truths tells this uniquely American story, beginning in 1492, asking whether the course of events over more than five centuries has proven the nation’s truths, or belied them. To answer that question, Lepore wrestles with the state of American politics, the legacy of slavery, the persistence of inequality, and the nature of technological change. “A nation born in contradiction… will fight, forever, over the meaning of its history,” Lepore writes, but engaging in that struggle by studying the past is part of the work of citizenship. With These Truths, Lepore has produced a book that will shape our view of American history for decades to come.

Book The Wisdom That Pays Bills

Download or read book The Wisdom That Pays Bills written by Osefranklin Arebun and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a cool Sunday evening in the comfort of our little home in the winter of 2004. We had just finished a sumptuous dinner of white rice and seafood. The weather was somewhat fair before it began to drizzle. As a result we entered into the house to take shelter. But the breeze did get worse and turned into a tempestuous whirlwind which suddenly removed the roof of one of our twin buildings before anyone could blink an eye. And it was mercilessly going to evacuate the roof of the other building and that would completely leave us homeless and cast us in the cold. This scared me and every other member of our modest family. So I knelt down and prayed to God that He would not allow the windstorm destroy our building. The Lord did hearken to my prayers, and the building was spared! I told myself that moment that when I grow up and leave that house, that I will never again allow poverty make fun of me and my loved ones. This resolve has continuously motivated me. And I have never forgotten that faithful evening up to this moment. My history of lack, and want has consistently put the burden on me to search for a permanent way out. I am not talking about getting rich by all means, I am talking about wisdom that pays bills for posterity. King Solomon speaking in my favorite book says: there is a way that seems right unto man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. There are so many shortcuts to getting rich and successful in our world today, but our focus in this book is the one that guarantees eternal riches. In my journey to the path of the wisdom that pays bills, I have learnt from thought and study that the road to enduring riches like the color of the sky does not change with time or age; no matter where you are looking from in the world. That which has been is what will be. There is nothing new under the sun. Contained in this book are some of the wisdom nuggets the Lord has been teaching me over the years during the cause of my journey to the wisdom that pays bills. As you apply the same principles daily, you will begin to notice practical improvement in your life. Whether it be in the area of finances, health or your relationship with God. You can pick any verse of the wisdom nuggets contained in this goldmine and use it as your mantra every day. Repeat it over and over again until it opens up to you the gateway to an inner awareness, and you will begin to experience a transformation in that area of your life. The wisdom that pays bills is unique in the sense that it is not a once read, it is a daily companion, a goldmine of wisdom that you will need from time to time. Scroll to the top of the page and buy a copy of this goldmine and get started today; it will make you money and multiply your resources.

Book Postmodern Belief

Download or read book Postmodern Belief written by Amy Hungerford and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can intense religious beliefs coexist with pluralism in America today? Examining the role of the religious imagination in contemporary religious practice and in some of the best-known works of American literature from the past fifty years, Postmodern Belief shows how belief for its own sake--a belief absent of doctrine--has become an answer to pluralism in a secular age. Amy Hungerford reveals how imaginative literature and religious practices together allow novelists, poets, and critics to express the formal elements of language in transcendent terms, conferring upon words a religious value independent of meaning. Hungerford explores the work of major American writers, including Allen Ginsberg, Don DeLillo, Cormac McCarthy, Toni Morrison, and Marilynne Robinson, and links their unique visions to the religious worlds they touch. She illustrates how Ginsberg's chant-infused 1960s poetry echoes the tongue-speaking of Charismatic Christians, how DeLillo reimagines the novel and the Latin Mass, why McCarthy's prose imitates the Bible, and why Morrison's fiction needs the supernatural. Uncovering how literature and religion conceive of a world where religious belief can escape confrontations with other worldviews, Hungerford corrects recent efforts to discard the importance of belief in understanding religious life, and argues that belief in belief itself can transform secular reading and writing into a religious act. Honoring the ways in which people talk about and practice religion, Postmodern Belief highlights the claims of the religious imagination in twentieth-century American culture.
