Book The Wisdom of God s Fools Studies in Spiritual Sagacity Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Wisdom of God s Fools Studies in Spiritual Sagacity Classic Reprint written by Edgar Dewitt Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wisdom of God's Fools Studies in Spiritual Sagacity It is to the credit Of Naaman that he heeded the good advice Of his servants. Proud man that he was, he bowed his stubborn will and obeyed the command of Elisha. He did precisely what the prophet told him to do; he bathed himself not once or twice or three times, but seven times in the river Jordan, and his flesh came as the flesh Of a little child. Naaman became a fool for God's sake and the wisdom of God was demonstrated in the cure which followed. What had seemed Naaman's wisdom was Naaman's folly, and what had seemed foolishness in Naaman's eyes was in reality the deepest wisdom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wisdom of God's Fools Studies in Spiritual Sagacity "Thou canst not prove the Nameless, O my son, Nor canst thou prove the world thou movest in, Thou canst not prove that thou art body alone, Nor canst thou prove that thou art spirit alone, Nor canst thou prove that thou art both in one, Thou canst not prove that thou art immortal, no, Nor yet that thou art mortal - nay, my son, Thou canst not prove that I, who speak with thee, Am not thyself in converse with thyself; For nothing worthy proving can be proven, Nor yet disproven: wherefore be thou wise, Cleave ever to the sunnier side of doubt, And cling to faith beyond the forms of faith!" Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here is a no-nonsense theologian who goes for the jugular. In Forsyth's company we are aware of both the glory and the gravity of what we are doing when we go to our knees in prayer." -Eugene H. Peterson P. T. Forsyth is sometimes described as an English pre-cursor to Karl Barth. He was born in 1848 to a Scottish family of humble origins and later in life attended Aberdeen University, where he graduated with first-class honours in classical literature in 1869. In 1876 he was ordained and called to minister in Shipley, Yorkshire. In his early ministry in the Congregational Church, Forsyth fought orthodoxy and sought for the right to rethink Christian theology and pursue liberal thought. In 1878, however, Forsyth experienced a conversion from, in his own words, "being a Christian to being a believer, from a lover of love to an object of grace." A profound awareness of pastoral responsibility was awakened which radically altered the the course of his ministry. His conversion thrust him from the leadership of liberalism to a recovery of the theology of grace. Quickly, he became one of the better-known figures in British Nonconformity. In 1894, he received a call to Emmanuel College in Cambridge, where he preached his famous sermon, "Holy Father" in 1896. In 1901, he accepted a position as principal of Hackney Theological College, London where he remained until he died in 1921. Over his lifetime Forsyth published 25 books and more than 260 articles. He is often credited with recovering for his generation the reality and true dimensions of the grace of God.

Download or read book Fools for Christ written by Jaroslav Pelikan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-11-07 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy is too great and too terrible when encountered directly for men of normal sanity to be able to contemplate it comfortably. Only those who cannot care for the consequences run the risk of the direct confrontation of the Holy. This book is a study of six men who ran this risk. Balancing the negative and positive points of view throughout these six essays, Jaroslav Pelikan has written a brilliant examination of the three questions: the True, the Good, and the Beautiful. With Kierkegaard and Paul, Dr. Pelikan looks into the relationship between the True and the Holy. With Dostoevsky and Luther, it is the Good and the Holy and with Nietzche and Bach, it is the Beautiful and the Holy. In the first two he draws on the whole history of Western thought. In the second two, he looks into the background of Christian morality, and in the last two, he reaches all the way back to the Greeks in his penetrating study of Western aesthetics. Philosophy, theology, ethics, and aesthetics - they are all here. Beyond them all, Dr. Pelikan shows how the Holy cannot be captured and held by any of them, although the attempt is frequently made. Rather the Holy must remain unqualified, transfiguring within itself the experience of the True, the Good, or the Beautiful.

Book Doctrine of Revelation

Download or read book Doctrine of Revelation written by A.W Pink and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What we propose doing in this book, namely, to make a serious attempt to assist some of those who have inhaled the poisonous fumes of infidelity and been left in a state of mental indecision concerning sacred things. Our principal object will be to set forth some of the numerous indications that the Bible is something far superior to any human production, and give some of the rules which require to be heeded if the Scriptures are to be properly interpreted; and though their scope will go beyond the general title of ""Divine revelation,"" yet they will complement and complete the earlier ones.
